Back to mine - Word mixtapes
Been thinking about the Back to mine series of cd's where artists get to compile an albums worth of tracks that influenced them or are personal favourites. I assume they get paid for making these compilations? Nice work if you can get it.The reality is they are really only the modern equivalent of a mixtape. I am sure we can do much better and sticking to my made up rules of a maximum of 12 tracks that will fit on one cd here is one I made earlier:-
Little Girl blue - Nina Simone
Right in time - Lucinda Williams
Fire it up - Modest Mouse
Late in the evening - Paul Simon
Ramalama (bang bang) - Roisin Murphy
Boops(here to go) - Sly and Robbie
You must be prepared to dream - Ian McNabb
Waiting for the great leap forward - Billy Bragg
Hackensack - Fountains of Wayne
Goodbye Girl - Squeeze
In spite of ourselves - John Prine
Exodus - Jimmy Scott
Not necessarily all time favourites but certainly wouldnt be averse to it appearing as mix cd in my car.

1.Mr Jones/Counting Crows
2.Touch of Grey/Grateful Dead
3.Drivers Seat/Sniff 'n the Tears
4.Don't Forget to Dance/the Kinks
5.Crazy Man Michael/Fairport Convention (Sandy vocal)
6.Lay Me Low/Albion Band
7.Single Father/Jackie Leven
8.Essence/Lucinda Williams
9.I Hear You Breathing In/Eleanor McEvoy
10.Carrickfergus/Van Morrisson & the Chieftains
11.Holy Ground/Traffic
12.Song for the Road/David Ford
6 of these are perennial essentials, the others change regularly, as number 12, from my current favourite LP, is fresh in with a bullet.
Touch of grey
is a fantastic song.
Single Father was on the list but got edited out at the last minute.
Carrickfergus is awesome - in fact a major disappointment with the recent 3 cd best of was that it wasnt included. I like some of Irish Heartbeat but Carrickfergus was the one standout track and dont really want to buy it just for that.
I've heard them so often.....
.....I rarely listen to them nowadays but these would be a good selection for my mixtape -
Steve Forbert - Going Down To Laurel
Lyle Lovett - She's No Lady
Steve Earle - Someday
Brinsley Shwartz - What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding
Kirsty MacColl - Don't Come The Cowboy With Me
John Hiatt - Almost Fed Up With The Blues
Todd Snider - Happy To Be Here
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Pride And Joy
Tom Waits - 29 Dollars And An Alligator Purse
Fred Eaglesmith - Spookin' The Horses
Ray Lamontagne - How Come
Mary Gauthier - Sugar Cane
"I've heard them so often, I rarely listen to them nowadays..."
Why ever not? I hope you dug 'em out and gave another spin, prompted thru' this exercise. Don't know all the songs, but a stellar list of artists make me want to search out the one's I've missed.
Apart from just listening to the songs...
...over the years I've played these repeatedly whilst trying to work out chords/lyrics in order to play them on guitar. So I've actually *played* these songs as well as *heard* them dozens of times.
Do you ever feel that you are so familiar with a song that you almost don't care if you never heard it again? It's not actually as bad as that but I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I ever pulled any of the above cds out.
But........now that I've caught up with everyone else and got my whole music collection on my pc(and soon to be put on a spanking new mp3 player)I won't mind in the least if they come up on shuffle!
I hope you do investigate some of the songs unfamiliar to you. I can assure you, each one of them absolutely knocked me out at one time....hence the reason for pigging out...hehe!
