back garden gig

Doug B's picture

If you could choose three bands or solo artists, alive or dead from any period in their history to play in your garden, who would you pick?
Remember, in times of dry weather Rammstein could be a fire hazard...

Recorded

I think it was recorded music to play /not play in the garden.

Let's start with something bucolic - say, Fairport with RT and Sandy.

Then Little Feat all afternoon as the sprogs run wild, then the Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" group as the night grows longer, agreeable vintages are uncorked, and the mind turns towards a cig and a brandy.

I could easily pick more modern options but this "back from the dead" option has a lot of appeal.

Back Garden Festival

I'd get Nirvana to play just to annoy my neighbours who play god damn awful music all the time.

For a more chilled out set I would get Simon and garfunkel

and for a bit of chirpy dancing, maybe the Levellers early fun stuff.

Hampshire Mini Festival

I think I'd start with a songsmith troubadour but can't decide between Billy Bragg or James Martin. Will assume sunny day and go for Mr Martin.

Next on would be the dancing part - would love to have the Bhundi Boys really going for it.

Would end into darkness with Sigur Ros doing their thing.

Welcome to Kirk Central, wristbands here...

Bingham's is sooo corporate these days, isn't it? They have indoor toilets and everything. And that Mastercard sponsorship deal, I mean, reaaallly. Meanwhile, grab your cheeseburgers, file left for the portable lavvy and raise your hands for (mind the neighbours) Rory Gallagher's acoustic set, followed by Neil Finn and friends (Johnny Marr, Tim Finn, Richard Thompson and Me) and, to finish, Warren Zevon and his all star band - Jim Keltner, Danny Thompson, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Kirsty MacColl, Lowell George and Mike Mills on (keyboards and BVs). Welcome your comperes, John Peel, Robyn Hitchcock and Jude Rogers. John Hiatt will take your orders at the big Mark Ellen Burger Van.

A summer country show

First on, The Rockingbirds
Second on, Chilli willi and the Red Hot Peppers
Third on, The Flying Burrito Brothers (Last of the Red Hots line-up: yes, yes, I know that means no Gram, but it would, believe me, be much more reliable that way. With Gram he would drink too much and OD in the toilets. They'd still do all the right songs, trust me!)

Rock in the Rain

Got a couple depending on the music style -

Rock

I'd kick off with -

Pink Floyd - why should they headline, miserable sods wont play together! :)

System of a Down - just so I can see the locals faces in the fading sunlight

Rage Against the Machine - I fell asleep when I saw then in the 90's. My youthfull arrogance thought they where rubbish, how wrong was I!

Mellow

Over the Rhine - the Word CD got me into these

Isobel Campbell and Mark Langan

Martha Wainwright (can I cheat and have her brother with her).

Soul/Blues

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - a cracking, current Soul singer. Well worth checking out

B B King - saw him on his last tour and he blew me away and it was his last UK tour. So this would be a chance to see him again

Aretha Franklin - the queen of soul herself, but none of that 80's rubbish she did!

Although a clash of styles...

I would start the evening with the duelling pianos of...
Keith Jarrett and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart...

...and finish it with The Beatles playing the entire medley from Abbey Road

Anything in the middle would be filler
