How to decide?

When my son was born six years ago, we got home from the hospital and, just as I always do when we've got people round, I went to put on some music. Hang on, I thought - whatever I put on now will be the first music he ever hears. Oh, the dilemma. I wanted something good that wasn't full of loud noises which would frankly scare the life out of him. Being born is traumatic enough without having to experience guitar-based rock on the same day. So, I went for Van Morrison's Astral Weeks: unthreatening, unfrightening, but hopefully something that he won't be embarrassed about one day.

Over the next few weeks, I found myself gravitating to music that had some kind of infancy about it: Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music, the O, Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, a little bit of Robert Johnson and Hank Williams. Whenever I put on Elvis in the car, he always went straight to sleep. I like to think that this was because he found it comforting rather than boring.

Anyway, congratulations to you, Chief.

congrats!

well, I don't know how everyone else does it... Biscuit Jr would sit in the back of the car going "no! no! no!" to all my music (Beatles, Elvis Costello etc.)

anyway, I would recommend this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Songs-Young-Heart-Limited-Book/dp/B000G03RZY/ref... as we both like it!

Just play anything

and see what gets a reaction.

That's been the policy with all three little Leggs now aged 15, 10 and 2 (don't get me started on gaps and dangers of a free bar).

Frst reaction from the youngest came with The Decemberists track Summersong, which is also on her 10 year-old brother's playlist. She also likes a bit of Kaiser Chiefs.

A fab CD...

Bedtime with the Beatles by erstwhile Jellyfish guitarist and all-round genius Jason Falkner is a doozy, and comes in pink or blue covers. Good for lullabies, also works for crippling hangovers.

and Volume 2's just come out.

My newborn..

is due to arrive in 3 weeks, and that rockabye website will come in handy! I'm enjoying it myself! I have my driving test in the morning, so maybe I should play that in the hope that it will mellow out the examiner!!

Early Talking Heads

Either the music itself, or the way it makes me jig while holding her, but the first two Talking Heads albums were a great hit with my daughter as a babe in arms. Highlight, from Talking Heads '77:

Who, who is it, who, who is it, who, who is it, who, who is it
What is it? What is it? What is it?
oooooooooh, baby it's YOU!

We learned quite quickly that music specially produced for children is usually irritating and isn't essential. They can love "adult" music at least as much, in the same way as they'd much just as soon play with your mobile phone than their Tommee Tippe Musical Lights Mobile.
