B J Cole and the Verve
The most ubiquitous man in music, popping up on pedal steel all over the place for 30 years or more. Whilst blagging up David Ford for one of our cohort, I looked up his website (DFs)and had the frisson of seeing he is to tour/has toured, with Mr Cole as his sole backing. This is often the way with BJ, as, tho' he has done albums of his own, ranging from country to jazz to classical to dance to everything, his forte is adding that little extra to the live output of another. This was best shown by his stealing the show from REM some years ago, on a "Later" REM concert on the telly. I desperately scoured you tube for a clip of Country Feedback to demonstrate how one of REMs best songs becomes impossibly sublime. I couldn't find it. Luckily I have a CD of it, but my beef is to ask if anyione knows of or has access to any live material from the Verve tour of USA when Mr Cole was a late substitution for the usual (normal) guitarist, who had presumably had had "musical differences". Whilst no great fan of Richard Ashcroft, I can't help but feel that the songs would polish up much more nicely with the steel lapping around the edges.
Please don't disappoint me.

I'll ask him...
Having playing with BJ a lot over the years, I have to agree, from the musicians side, that BJ's unbounded enthusiasm and relentless creativity is hugely inspiring for the people he's playing with - the feeling that anything can happen AND that he'll make that 'anything' sound fantastic is a really liberating one... I certainly look forward to any opportunity I have to play with him!
Anyway, I'll ask him if he knows of any live Verve recordings kicking around, and see what he says... :)
Steve Lawson?
If it is you, can I just say how much I've enjoyed seeing you playing at the Greenbelt festival over the years.
If it's not, I'm sure you're very good as well. Keep it up.
Hi Matthew, yes, it is me:
