Aww .. Kittens

rowlandwithaw's picture

I look forward to getting that e-mail from the WORD that leads me to interesting, funny and often bizarre stuff.... but what's this?

AWWWW: look! It's two little kittens! And they're suffering from myotonia congenita!

I'm already worried... when I see the clip it's appalling... to ridicule the fate of two kittens with a congenital defect that clearly has possible fatal results... disgraceful

Have I received an e-mail from some sicko site? No it's from the Word: a great web/print publication.. full of interesting erudite material and laddish humour (faux though funny, anyway) and established by well-respected journalists.

What the f*** is going on? What place does it have in The WORD? PLEASE no feeble excuses: including this link is simply wrong.

An abject apology to your audience for insulating their intelligence is about the best you can do.

Shame on you.

Quite funny

I thought.

I like the idea that

The Word is insulating my intelligence - keeps your brain warm for the winter months.

Was it the Bonzos...

...who recorded Lagging The Radiators Of Your Mind?

Or am I thinking of Noel Harrison?

0
mojoworking | 30 October 2010 - 9:14am

Brilliant.

Love it!!! Well spotted.

You see, you can never trust a speel-chocker . . . . .

0
rowlandwithaw | 30 October 2010 - 7:47pm

Weirdly enough...

From the feedback I get - both from e-mails and from monitoring the various links as they're re-tweeted - that link was easily the most popular one from yesterday.

So while I'm genuinely sorry you disliked the clip, I'm not apologising for including it, and I certainly didn't set out to ridicule the kittens (the "Awwww" was deliberately used to show sympathy with their plight). And going forward, I will continue to include the occasional "cute" link, simply because people tend to like them.

4
Fraser Lewry | 29 October 2010 - 1:37pm

Hmmm

re most popular one

Most visited... that doesn't reflect reactions, I don't think I went there too!

re (the "Awwww" was deliberately used to show sympathy with their plight)

so why the exclamation at the end of the sentence? I don't accept that but...

'Cute' is fine but this is not cute by any stretch of the imagination.

0
rowlandwithaw | 29 October 2010 - 1:43pm

The "Aww, look Kittens!!"

thing is a well worn phrase and continued use of the exclamation marks just follows on from that. I don't think its any deeper than that

0
DogFacedBoy | 29 October 2010 - 1:50pm

The exclamation mark

Was there because I always use it with my "cute" links. They always follow the same format. This is from a few weeks back:

AWWW: look! it's a little dog! And
he's never been on the escalator
before! And he's confused!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dOwLtahtmHg

I don't believe that because a situation is sad - or even tragic - that the participants are precluded from being cute, and I sincerely believe that these kittens are exactly that. And as the author of a book on kittens and the owner of four kitten-related websites, I like to think I know a thing or two about junior feline beauty.

0
Fraser Lewry | 29 October 2010 - 1:56pm

Dying to laugh ? ? ! !

I'm still not placated as dying kittens, don't make me smile.

I think 'as the author of a book on kittens and the owner of four kitten-related websites' gives you a full house to my flush in the 'kitten poker stakes'

PS I liked the dog on escalator (but that wasn't life threatening . . .)

1
rowlandwithaw | 29 October 2010 - 2:26pm

This isn't life threatening either.

These aren't dying kittens. They're kittens with myotonia congenita, which isn't fatal, either in cats, goats or humans. It's a condition whereby the animal's muscles stiffen when they get excited, that's all. It's only dangerous if the animal in question falls badly.

The kitten died of an unrelated repository failure, something not uncommon in young cats.

Here's some "fainting" goats.

1
Caerys | 30 October 2010 - 2:39pm

Someone should make a film

based on this idea.....eh? Really?.....and a book? Blimey

0
DogFacedBoy | 30 October 2010 - 8:52pm

Funny but in a sick sort of way

and I felt very guilty about laughing.

Sad too, apparently the black and white cat has already died :-(

0
stimpy | 29 October 2010 - 1:38pm

I tried not to find it funny

as I have cats myself but it is a very cartoon like image.

But I didn't think that the link or the clip was meant in a humerous or sick way. Just playing on the "Aww, kittens" cliche.

Wheras a TV documentary on narcolepsy in humans had me killing myself laughing - especially at one of their meetings where four people had to take the minutes as they all kept zonking out at different times. Even they were cracking up

0
DogFacedBoy | 29 October 2010 - 1:47pm

i don't suppose

it's on youtube, is it?

0
ivan | 29 October 2010 - 2:16pm

Yes...

Tissues at the ready*

*this doesn't apply to Lenny.

0
stimpy | 29 October 2010 - 2:52pm

Awww punk kittens!

0
Molesworth | 29 October 2010 - 2:14pm

Now THAT I do like

... though I suspect Fotherington-Thomas, would not....

0
rowlandwithaw | 29 October 2010 - 6:14pm

Relax, man!

I thought it was cute - and a bit sad seeing as one of the kittens died.

More please!

0
Five-Centres | 29 October 2010 - 2:23pm

Must admit...

I didn't think it was amusing or cute. Just sad.

1
Doug B | 29 October 2010 - 2:23pm

Is it just me, or..? clearly not . . . . phew

A ray of hope that somebody else thinks like I do . . . something very sad ... and certainly not to be seen as light-hearted.

0
rowlandwithaw | 29 October 2010 - 2:38pm

Here's a video of Tommy Cooper...

It's hilarious, but a bit sad because he's since died.

The knowledge he subsequently died doesn't make it any less funny (or less sad, come to that)

3
stimpy | 29 October 2010 - 3:00pm

Sorry?

Tommy Cooper was indeed hilarious . . AND slapstick but not because he was suffering from a medical condition that caused him to fall over.....

though ironically when he did suffer the fatal heart attack on stage, initially some of the audience that it was part of the act . .

0
rowlandwithaw | 29 October 2010 - 7:03pm

My point was, he was funny and later died

of something completely unrelated to the reason we laughed at him.

A little like the kittens and goats, really.

0
stimpy | 1 November 2010 - 11:32am

Can't it be all three?

I certainly think it's sad, but I just don't believe that prevents it from being the other two. From tragedy cometh comedy, as Aristotle said. Or something similar.

5
Fraser Lewry | 29 October 2010 - 3:17pm

No...

In all honesty I don't think it can. You are stretching to defend it when perhaps it might be better to just accept it was an error of judgement.
I love the mailout and look forward to it. Surely there are better things to include than this.

0
Doug B | 30 October 2010 - 12:23pm

I thought it was interesting...

an consequently not offensive. I didn't know cats carried that gene.

You live and learn.

And Fraser, if I'd known you were a cat expert, I'd have saved myself a trip to the vet yesterday with my increasingly neurotic Burmese!

1
Helena Handcart | 29 October 2010 - 3:54pm

Burmese

Are supposed to be neurotic, I think.

0
Fraser Lewry | 29 October 2010 - 3:56pm

Ha!

Not to the extent this one is (he's the 3rd one I've had)

But thanks for the insight ;)

Lookity here - 2/3rds of the cats

0
Helena Handcart | 29 October 2010 - 4:12pm

Now that is cute . . .

At this stage, I can come clean and admit to having a beautiful Bengal called Archie . . . . . . .

0
rowlandwithaw | 29 October 2010 - 7:18pm

All cats

are neurotic, teh little sods

First, people not liking parties and now kittens. What the f*** is going on?

0
DogFacedBoy | 29 October 2010 - 4:12pm

I like Kittens -

Anyone know any good recipes? Thank you!

Now this must raise a smile, for all the wrong reasons!

A FARMER has been arrested for killing a pervert who had sex with his prize donkey — while wearing lingerie and a pair of slippers.

What is worse

Looking for a story on donkey sex or reading The Sun.

There's only one way to find out...

0
Beany | 29 October 2010 - 7:03pm

Having sex with a donkey while reading The Sun

takes the price.

Just don´t read about having sex with a donkey in The Sun while having sex with the donkey your reading about having sex with in The Sun.

0
Ola Claesson | 30 October 2010 - 12:52pm

The Art of Conversation?!

Yes, though taking small steps we've manged to leap from my little rant on kittens with a congenital disease to

killing a pervert who had sex with his prize donkey — while wearing lingerie and a pair of slippers.

Yes, this is what we need on the net: the cut and thrust of the intellectual duel.....

rowlandwithaw | 29 October 2010 - 8:32pm

You want cats?

looking cute, sweet, nauseating, gut wrenching, pitiful, pathetic?

Here's the site for you http://icanhascheezburger.com/

P.S. I hate cats because they shit in my garden without my permission.

My pension plan

I delved further and found Fraser's Kitten calendars.
You can buy a used 2008 calendar for £35:55. That means at the next London Massive drink I'm going to turn up with a few of these calendars, get them signed by Fraser then sell them in a couple of years time.
The proceeds should keep our three cats fed for a few months! :)

0
Carl Parker | 29 October 2010 - 11:36pm

£35.55?

Don't waste your money. I've got loads of 'em.

0
Fraser Lewry | 30 October 2010 - 8:20am

You mean

you didn't sell out?
Are we no longer a nation of animal lovers?
I shall write a letter to The Times.

0
Carl Parker | 30 October 2010 - 12:27pm

I did all my laughing...

...before I knew one of them died. My daughter did it the other way round, which is why she now thinks I'm a bad person. But as someone higher up said, kitten didn't die of what I was laughing at.

0
mikethep | 1 November 2010 - 10:31am

Of course it's sad,

and whilst I didn't find any need to laugh at the clip, I did find it engrossing because I had never seen such a thing and is it pompous to say, it was enlightening in a small way ? Surely the owners wanted to highlight the condition by filming it and posting it on You Tube.

0
Francis Barry-Walsh | 2 November 2010 - 3:52pm

Phew!

Thank goodness you didn't post the trailer for Human Centipede or Two Girls One Cup.
