Avatar - Really quite amazing!

Grant's picture

Have just got in from watching James Cameron's "Avatar" in 3D and I have to say it well worth every penny of the £10 I spent to see it.
It's truly a remarkable piece of work, and whilst the plot is a bit "Dancing with Dangerous Hippy Smurfs", and a few of the familiar Cameron passions are on display (Weapons technology etc), the 3D renders it a completely immersive experience. The alien landscape is, it must be said, the Yessongs album cover brought to life, but so beautifully displayed that you almost find yourself holding your breath in awe.
The Avatars are incredibly emotive and totally captivating.
It's not a short film, but it's not a boring one, and the 3D WORKS,not just as a gimmick but as a way of drawing you into the story. The battle sequences are fraught and involving and I think I got something in my eye at one or two points during the film, so entranced was I.
In short, it works.
Give yourself a treat and try it.

Agreed! Visuals are best

Agreed!

Visuals are best ever in a movie and the story , while a bit predictable, is the right side of cheesy.

Thirded

Stunning film. I tried to keep away from all the negative crap that was being stirred up over the past few weeks so had absolutley no preconceptions. The 3-D is breathtaking. The scenery looks like a Roger Dean cover (NO bad thing!) The plot moves along and, most importantly, takes you with it. The battle scenes are relentless. I didn't know anyone in it except Sigourney Weaver but they were all very good. And finally, Cameron managed to fulfill his job description, unlike so, so many of his comrades. His job is to make me care and I absolutely did. Its a film that will stay with me for a long, long time. Driving home through the snow I could hardly concentrate on anything for flashes of floating mountains and fantastical beasts. I awoke this morning with one thought; imagine if Peter Jackson had had 3-D at his disposal for the Rings trilogy?

Once the inital wow factor wares off

The film bored my senseless.

Yes the graphics are stunning but my God the scripts appalling and Sam Worthington makes Shia LeBeouf look like a dynamic lead.

Every bit of the story is predictable and telegraphed a miles off. And when the end battle comes the Ewoks were much more hardcore.

I'll go one step further than MrSib

I don't even think the effects were much better than any other bit of sci-fi that we've seen before.

Did you see it in 3D?

As I'd honestly say that alters your relationship with the landscape and the effects as a whole.

Maybe my eyes weren't up to the task

But I did see it in 3D, yes.

A Marmite film perhaps?

I saw it the other day and have to say it was unbelievably predictable and formulaic. The 3D is good, but not nearly good enough to sustain popcorn fodder for over 2 1/2 hours.

Very average, and certainly not worth the extra £2 or so per ticket they charge you for the privilege of seeing it.

My main interest was seeing all the other 3D trailers coming in 2010, inclduing Toy Story - fingers crossed!
