Au secours mes amis...

The Californian's picture

I have a little music related car problem and I would ask for you thoughts on a solution.

I have a 6 cd player in my car. The other day, when I pressed the button to play cd 5, the display said 'no disc'. I then pressed the button for cd 1 and the display said 'no magazine'. When I press the eject button on the magazine holder itself, it makes the familiar 'eject' sound and does a bit of a movement but the magazine stays firmly in place. It would seem that cd 5 is probably out of kilter and is clogging up the works. I would rather not take it to pieces. So, any ideas?

Have a rest and try again.

I had a similar problem with mine at one point - when I went back to it the next day, it ejected happily.

If that doesn't work, and if the problem can't be resolved by pressing the buttons, I would recommend you go to a car hifi place, or Halford's. I could maybe get mine apart - there is no way I could get it back together again!

A couple of suggestions

Is it possible to remove all power from the unit, maybe by removing a fuse, and leave it like that for a while? It may "think" differently when it reboots. Is there anything in the manual about removing the magazine manually, the equivalent to poking a bent paper clip into a standard CD player?
If you end up taking it to bits (and it's probably not really that hard) take photographs at every stage so that you have something to refer to if you struggle getting it back together.

May I suggest...

...a sturdy tap on each side, top and bottom. If possible, remove the changer and give a shake.

Good luck!

After the thread a few months ago

which I can't find--where Fraser and David iirc, extract two (?) missing CDs from the office CD player, I feel they really need to appear in a puff of smoke and sort it ...

Thanks guys,

I have done the 'resting' thing. This actually worked in a previous similar situation. Removing the fuse etc. - never thought of that but I see your logic. It's only a bloody machine after all. The tapping - yes, I thought the recent exploration of Glasgow's pot-holes might shift something but I will try a more methodical 'tap' over the weekend.

And, yes, where are Magazine Man and CD Boy when you need them?

Cheers chaps.

so, 11 weeks later,

I picked up my now repaired CD player from Beaver Audio in Glasgow. I had taken the casing off after some considerable pushing, pulling, teasing and cursing. Still couldn't get tray 6 back in its place. After some weeks searching I found my new big-toothed chums in Gt Western Road and took the bag of bits in last week. Mr Beaver immediately pronounced it needing a new motor and told me to come back today. I slid it back in place hooked it up and it's good as new.

In the meantime, I rediscovered my old collection of cassette tapes so I have been listening to some stuff I haven't heard for ages - David Byrne - Rei Momo, KD Lang - Absolute Torch & Twang, The Dan Reed Network - Slam. So, it wasn't all bad.

Once again, I thank you all for your input
