ATM - Web site or Blog

alf2019's picture

Turning to the vast intellect that is the Massive, I am looking at setting up either a web site or Blog based around the history of bands who have played in my hometown, Warrington, over the years.
Initially I suspect it will consist of a list of dates, venues and bands but I hope to extend this, adding further comment, pictures, a forum etc.
Any suggestions on which would be more suitable, Website or blog?
Many thanks in advance...

There's not a great deal of difference

Blogs are chronological, while websites often aren't. And many shades of grey inbetween.

Some very minor fiddling with a Wordpress installation can make a blog look like a normal website. There are some very nice (and often free) magazine-style templates for self-hosted Wordpress sites.

Wordpress

Was what I was thinking about. I was thinking maybe website as there would be a considerable amount of static information. The more I read on Google the more muddier is becomes!!

I have two sites powered by Wordpress

This one and this one.

I wouldn't say either of them look like typical blogs (which was the intention).

Excellent

Both are really good (I really like the look and layout of the 2nd one).

You're lucky

The second one was a modified free theme (although I'm not sure if the author's still maintaining it). I paid for the first one.

Do a Google search along the lines of 'free wordpress magazine themes' and see if there's anything that takes your fancy.

If your site is going to be very text-heavy with lots of links (and chronology isn't an issue), you might want to think about using Mediawiki (which powers Wikipedia). You can use skins to make it look less Wikipedia-like.

Do you intend

updating on a regular basis? If so I would recommend using a blog engine to drive your web site. Search Engines like Google are changing their search algorithms to order web searches and search results based on "the most up-to-date" results. A blog engine/blog will make it easier for you to publish updates/new content to your site to optimise yourself for searches. A good blog engine will allow you to publish "static" web pages as well as the chronological listing of the main blog page.

I would expect

i'll be updating as and when I find new info. I'm not really planning a daily update type of site.

We are fortunate

in Edinburgh as a chap called Simon runs a wonderful site called Edinburgh Gig Archive.

http://www.edinburghgigarchive.com

Perhaps a look there will help

A Facebook page is probably a good idea too.EGA has 5000 FB pals many friendships have been rekindled and memories shared on there.

Wordpress v Blogger

Could someone who knows both give me the pros/cons of both please?

I do my Retro Man Blog on Blogger purely because it was easy to get started and I'm certainly no computer savvy technical person, as you might note from some of my posts...

All of what you see on my Blog here www.retromanblog.com is done using the available templates and gadgets, nothing else. The only html stuff on there is highlighting the links and opening to another window. It's OK I guess, it links easily to Facebook and Twitter, but now I am getting a bit restless about the look of it and I want to re-design it, which is getting a bit complicated...so I was thinking would I have been better using Wordpress or is there some easy "dummies" guide anywhere to setting up a"proper" web-site?
