ATM: The Damned
Posted by sitheref2409 on 18 August 2011 - 1:48am.
I was surfing around my iTunes collection and realized I like The Damned a lot.
Then I found out they're coming to town in October (in which format, I know not)
What's the best collection (single CD) or couple that represents them at their best? Google has NOT been my friend here, so I throw myself on the tender mercies of the Massive.

Not sure about CD comps.
But the deluxe editions of the first and third albums are sufficient for me.
I think the current touring line up is Dave, The Captain, Stu West, Monty Oxymoron (?) and Pinch (??)
Rat has long since left to seek the Holy Grail.
Saw them live a few years back. Did all the goodies one would want. Dave has aged very well, although is never seen in the same room as Dave Gahan.
Pinch
A minor claim to fame but I went to school with Pinch who is the current drummer in the Damned.
Talking of Damned drummers...
I met Rat on Sunday, I was having some sunday afternoon beers with a mate and he said, "oh, do you mind if an old friend of mine joins us?". It was a bit of a surprise when it turned out to be Rat Scabies! I knew they were acquainted and he was local but didn't think I would get to spend a pleasant afternoon in his hilarious company - lovely chap! Next time I'll be prepared with a mountain of my old Damned vinyl for him to sign!
Anyway, had to get that off that chest as I'm still in fan-boy heaven, I think the only decent Damned compilation is this one:
Smash It Up The Anthology - although it's a double CD.
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Smash-Up-Anthology-1976-1987-Damned/dp/B00005V4U...
It has a good selection of album tracks, but really, you could safely buy the first album "Damned Damned Damned", then "Machine Gun Etiquette" which is an absolute belter, a classic album from any genre or era, "The Black Album" is pretty diverse and interesting and "Strawberries" (very underated album with more of a 60's influence...) - all are really strong.
Looks like a decent compilation
But I agree about the individual albums - the Black Album is my personal favourite.
Who'd have thought that, of the first generation of punk bands,
it'd be The Damned that were still going 35 years later. *I* certainly wouldn't have given you any odds on that at the time!
Buzzcocks and Wire and The Stranglers
still going strong too and all three far from dull cabaret versions - particularly Wire who's recent release "Red Barked Tree" is one of their best ever albums of all time return to form etc etc.
The Damned are OK at the moment but they do have a slightly annoying keyboard player who jumps up and down and looks like that curly haired chap in Eastenders and Holby City.
But Stimps...
...let us not forget that the most entertaining of all those old punk bands (and I'm talking about their soap operatics, not their live show, music, etc) is surely Sham 69.*

Thank you all!
Thank you all!
Easy peasy
I have the Chiswick "The Best of the Damned" comp and it's a bit of a disappointment for my money. Machine Gun Etiquette is the way to go. You know it makes sense - not a dud track on there. The 25th anniversary remaster is worth getting.
The keyboardist
Please be kind about the keyboardist; if the crowd are too quiet, he tries to model a bit of enthusiasm. He's been a pal of mine since primary school, and a gentler, more sensitive, and sincerely artistic person you would not want to meet. That's why he's playing for the Damned.
Compare and contrast:
Is that Monty Oxymoron album *really* called
'Visions Of The Ecstasy C*nt'??
