ATM - second hand bikes

art vanderlay's picture

I know there are a number of cycling enthusiasts here so I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction for a second hand bike shop, can be anywhere south east/south midlands.

I'm looking for a hybrid with aluminium frame but don't really want to pay more than £150 which puts the option for new out of reach?

Any suggestions?

Aluminium frame

Are you sure you want aluminium?

I understand the desire for lightness, but it comes at a cost. Those frames are exceptionally rigid and your spine won't thank you for long journeys.

No suggestions (not my neck of t'woods)

But I think you're doing the right thing buying second hand. I had a similar budget and wound up getting a new Halford's bike. It isn't *that* bad, but I know now I could've got something better if I'd done a bit of research and gone second hand. Impatience y'see, but you live and learn.

What will you be using it for? Commuting, leisure...etc?

Leisure only...

Just weekend 30-40 mile trips on road and track.

Looking at aluminium frame only because I took a test ride on a new Trek at the weekend and it was like an epiphany, I realised that I had been pushing round an extra 15kg of solid steel riding my 12 year old mountain bike. no wonder those hills were so hard, so thats what bought this search on, made all the more urgent by my biking friend who was with me at the weekend and also took the test ride having the readies to go back to the shop this week and purchase said bike!

Anyway thanks for answers, I'll let you know if I find anything. Btw don't fancy eBay as I want to test ride and have a general look before I commit.

On line bike buying

I agree, it's something I don't understand.

You have to ride the bike before you buy. So unless you abuse the good graces of a bike shop and test ride a load of bikes, identify the model and frame size you want and then make your apologies saying you want to think about it and then go on-line, it's total stupidity.
