ATM - Romantic trip advice sought

Oscar Patterson's picture

Sorry folks, I've been away for a few days, and don't know if an ATM request is now frowned upon, however, if it is offensive, please don't read any further...

After a bit of a nightmare summer for her (health, family etc), I've decided to take a rare splurge and take Mrs P away for an indulgent break - I am kind of interested in spending a few quid (she's worth it and all that) and fancy a fancy, laid back resort type place with a restaurant with little table candles and on stilts over the ocean (you know the kind of thing, I've just seen the pictures) - although it doesn't *need* to be the Indian Ocean - pref the all inclusive type of thing, so its easy whilst we're there.

I've never done this before, and don't anticipate I'll *ever* be able to afford to do it again, but my advice is where is good value? and who is good to look with, my plan is November, and i'm not looking to spend more than (deep breath) £2k. ANY help appreciated....I'm finding that the internet has more options than I ever thought possible, but with less clarity than you could imagine

Some ideas

Cape Town is great and good value. Food and drink is good and very reasonable. Not sure about all inclusive but try to stay at one of the good hotels on the Waterfront (The Table Bay is very swanky).

All inclusive on Bermuda makes it quite reasonable (its bloody expensive to eat out otherwise). The island is lovely and good fun to explore by scooter. Not sure on the weather though.

The Seychelles are lovely but expensive. I thought Mauritius was not nearly as nice for nearly the same money.

Barbados is nice - esp the west side. All inclusive is a good idea.

Muscat in Oman is very beautiful - not sure how touristy it is. The Al Bustan Palace hotel is ace.

If I had to pick one place, it would be Cape Town.

Bermuda will be seriously cold in November.

Trust me.

Two grand is a lot of money but might be a bit tight for the sort of holiday you have in mind, particularly if you are thinking Maldives/Seychelles.

You could look at Goa, or perhaps Gambia - or maybe one of the smaller Caribbean islands? Barbados is ace but somewhere really nice will stretch your budget.

I would say this, but have you thought about a cruise?

Seconded

If you can stomach the idea then a Caribbean cruise would be in your budget, especially if you can go last minute. Get to see lots of places, it'll be nice and warm and we just view it as a floating hotel on which we can organise the next day's activities. (We've enjoyed both Celebrity and Princess cruises but (early thirties) are definitely at the younger end of the demographic!)

Oddly enough...

...I was looking at a brochure for the Gambia yesterday, which despite some rather dubious eco-credentials might be what you're looking for and within your budget.

I'll vouch for the Al Bustan Palace hotel in Muscat, Oman

A very nice place at a reasonable price. Oman is a great place if you want to get away from it all and will still be warm at the end of the year

If it's not too late

Can I recommend Kerala, in the South of India. You can find a relatively cheap resort, go up into the mountains if you want to cool down, take long, meandering trips on riverboats, try ayurvedic massage and, at the end of each day, settle down to the most beautiful food in the world.

It costs a bit to get out there (maybe £600 each), but the remaining £800 would probably buy you some lovely accommodation (my advice - a little email-haggling works wonders), all the food you could dream of and chauffeurs taking you everywhere. I realise it's not quite the plan you had, but it is an incredibly romantic, relaxing place. And, if you arrange it yourself, it would be tailor-made and the money you spend would go straight to locals, rather than international hotel chains (sorry for getting all worthy - this is something I feel very strongly about).
