ATM - Podcasts with iTunes
Firstly, my apologies to those who are either (a) bored with this subject, (b) incandescent about this subject, or (c) confused about this subject. I'm in category (c).
Here's the thing, hitherto I have signed up for the podcast via iTunes and it has downloaded itself, as and when available. As a subscriber, I followed the process outlined in last week's announcement and was successfully signed up . I now find that I have two sets of podcasts in my iTunes Library - and on my iPod.
It seems to me that I only need one set, but before pressing the Delete key, I wanted to seek the experience of others. I also don't want to run the risk of losing the back catalogue as they still provide hours of listening pleasure.
So my question is: "Can I safely delete the 'old' podcasts and rely on those which come with the new process always being in my library and on my iPod?"

Yes.
If you've got two copies on iTunes and two on your iPod, then it's safe to delete one.
If you delete a podcast from iTunes, it will ask you if you want to keep the file or move it to the Recycling Bin. If your recycling bin doesn't automatically empty, then send them there and check if it's worked, or alternatively keep the files and see if it works. Either way, you can undo the deletion by eiither restoring from the recycle bin or re-adding the folder that the Word podcasts are stored which should sort it all out.
If you're backing up your computer
then, if all goes wrong, you can restore the files from the backup and reload them into iTunes.
Of course, if your're not backing up your computer then you should start now! :-)
But how did you get them all
My 'back issues' are all greyed out and I can't see the usual 'get' button to download the set?
Sorry, Graham...
...can't explain that.
Just a thought
Did you unsubscribe from the old 'free' podcasts at the same time as you subscribed to the new subscription - only version? I think you have to delete in iTunes as well as unsubscribe.
No, I didn't...
...and won't do so until I'm clear about the way to do this. I wish I could say it was planned that way, but it didn't cross my mind!
I loathe iTunes, it's the spawn of Satan,
and I'm not at all sure how it's supposed to behave, so my remarks may be off target. However, I just burn the MP3s onto a CD-R to listen to in the car, and as far as I can see, although in iTunes I now have two sets of listed Podcasts (before and after the 'Subscribers Only' change), in Windows I only have one set of Word Podcast MP3 files....
So I'd advise extreme caution if you value retaining the lot, unless, as others have said, you're confident of your backup strategy. You do have one, don't you?
Of course...
...all on a Time Machine! However, I am going to be very cautious and will not be rushing into this.
Thanks for the responses so far, I await any other insights.
If you've got them all on a TM backup, then
you've got nothing to lose by deleting them from iTunes and seeing what happens
*heh heh heh*
(Sound of Satan, rubbing his hands with glee and cackling horribly)
Stop it...
...Stop it now!
Ooops...
...Double ooops.
Related question
When the change happened I too put my sub number in and have a second download of podcast 191. As far as iTunes tell me though there wasn't a podcast last week so nothing has been issued since the change to test it with. Is this correct or is 192 out somewhere in cyberspace with me waiting for it to arrive in vain?
Not yet I assume
If 192 had been released then, according to the new rules, a shortened 15 minute version would be available on the home page and it isn't.
Podcast 192
is the sound of someone reading every BT telephone directory in the country, one after the other, in a monotone.
I used to simply press...
"get more episodes" on my iPhone. I better look into this subscribe to podcast malarkey.
Update
Well, I ignored Mr Fox's evil imprecations and decided to go ahead. First, I copied and saved the 'old' podcasts into a file and stored it away. Then I deleted those podcasts from my iTunes library, crossed my fingers and synced. Success has followed, I now have one complete set of podcasts in my library on my Mac and on both my iPods. I even got the latest podcast along the way!
I need a beer after that! What do you mean, too early? I beg to differ.
