ATM: OZ - An HBO Hit or Miss?

Paul Vincent's picture

OK, Group Mind: now that I've almost reached the bottom of my DVD Box Sets heap, I'm looking around for other recommendations. Specifically, having had good previous experiences with HBO's drama series, favourites being The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, Deadwood, True Blood, and The Wire, I've noticed there appear to be 6 seasons of "Oz", which sounds quite promising. So what's The Massive's verdict on "Oz"? Is it any good? Am I likely to enjoy it given my previous list of enjoyed HBO series?

Several posts are starting with 'ATM'...

What does this mean?

Brilliant

Shocking, disturbing, unsettling, mind-bogglingly violent, but telling a great story and wonderfully acted by all. Compulsive viewing. Strong-stomach needed though! It'll haunt you.

But enough about the Massive

what about Oz?

Oooh

I was planning to get it too, so thanks, Five-Centres. I noticed it has two of the cast of Lost in prominant roles (Harold Perrineau & Adewale Akkinouye-Agbaje) which raised it on my radar. Will investigate further...

Same here

Seeing some of the Lost cast in it made me wonder, but I've heard so few reports about it. I'll keep it in mind too.

OZ

Excellent drama from HBO

Superb cast who you will recognise from other TV shows and films

Not for the squeamish mind!

Oz is all of the things mentioned above.

But it is PROPER bonkers, too.

Thanks, 5C and others

It sounded very much my cup of tea, and the comments above seem to clinch the deal, as far as I'm concerned. This looks like a case for Fifty Quid Man!

Hit, definitely.

Oz is a must-see. Years after watching it, I still think of some of the situations & characters on a regular basis. It really is mind-blowing. Only shortcoming I can think of, is that the photography hasn't aged so well. But it still is one of the best TV shows ever aired.

Oz...

Started being shown on Channel 4 the same time as Sopranos, and at the time I thought it was the better of the two. The first four series or so are absolutely fantastic, although it jumps the shark spectacularly after that point. The guy who used to play Alf Garnett's home help in the last series of In Sickness And In Health/Til Death Us Do Part is superb in it.

Oz is brutally fantastic

All the vices and virtues (mainly vices, obviously) of man in microcosm.

And it boasts the guy who plays J. Jonah Jameson in the Spiderman films playing the most repulsive 'white supremacist' thug imaginable.

One of the best ever

I just revisited the boxset a couple of months ago and I loved it as much this time around.
It's basically a soap on acid. Brutal, but also very very funny and very moving at times.

Definitely recommended viewing.

If you like other HBO dramas the chances are Oz will tickle your fancy too. It must be said though that it does jump the shark eventually. I won't say where for fear of spoiling but it does happen. That said though when it does you'll already be sufficiently predisposed to it to accept it and carry on regardless.
