ATM migrating stuff to ipad

Junior Wells's picture

got a bunch of photos and video footage I want to show on an ipad.

i assumed I would put it all in the one folder then drag it over.

no it appears to want to synch including all my iphotos folders . Ok..if you must. But it wont migrate the video. I have even converted the footage so it is apple compatible and still no dice.

any suggestions?

FTP?

I don't know if it'll work but can't you ftp it? I know you can get any file(s) on ipod touches via an ftp client so it should work with an ipad.

I bloody hate iTunes

It's the most counter-intuitive programme I've ever been forced to use.

I have an iPad and a PC. To limit the number of photos that iTunes dumps onto my iPad, I move them into a subfolder on my PC and then only synch that particular folder. I also tend to use the Camera Connector which at least only puts those pics I choose onto the iPad from my camera - but it's another £25 for something that should have come with the iPad in the first place. It also only recognises pics with 5 characters in the file name.

As for video, I've got loads of MP4s of TV programmes which I somehow managed to download. I import them into iTunes and then synch them with the iPad but iTunes recognises them as Films instead of TV programmes. This is the one process that isn't too baffling for a non-Apple-fanboi like me.

If you go into the properties of the file

you can change the type from Movie to TV programme. It's similar to changing imported audiobooks from cd from music to audiobook.

That does sound poor.

I would just select the photo albums I want from iPhoto in the iTunes sync screen, or specify a timescale, like "Last 3 months". Can you not do that on the PC version?

If not, I can imagine that would be bloody frustrating.

Haven't tried for a while but I was able to import video via VLC

onto the iPad although I think a recent post said VLC have withdrawn the iPad version.

VLC Streamer

They have, but you can use VLC Streamer if you're only wanting to watch your movies around the house, for example.

On iTunes

Just checking that when you've synced the iPad with iTunes, that you go onto the Photos part of the sync settings and check the "Include Video" box.

Sorry if that's something obvious that you've done - sometimes its the more obvious bits that get missed....

Create iPad version

This could help if your video is in a format that plays on your Mac / PC but not your iPad.

Open iTunes
Select your video from the Movies library
Open the Advanced menu
Create iPad or Apple TV Version
This could take a while but will create an m4v of the right size and aspect.

More laboriously you could read it into iMovie and then share to iTunes. Handy for stiching together YouTube downloads.

Good luck.

Dropbox?

Does the trick for me.

Am I being a cynic

to suggest that Apple make it difficult to put your own content on the iPad, because they want you to buy your content from the Apple Store?

No that's not cynical

It was part of the end to end design brief.
