ATM: London Victoria

I'm heading down to London this evening, staying near Victoria Station. According to the Underground website, Victoria is undergoing major renovation and they recommned you avoid the place.
Could any of you London residents tell this naive country boy if I should avoid the Victoria tube station? Or are the dire warning of enormous delays just exaggeration to intimidate wee Scottish laddies?

I work two minutes away
What the problem is - and it's not major - is escalator works taking place for some months. At 4pm they close one of the down escalators and route everybody going into the station through a different entrance. People exiting the station don't have a problem, but people, like me who head home that way find themselves queuing for..oh two minutes longer than normal! Later on it can get a bit more congested. But, I repeat people exiting the station don't have a problem.
I wouldn't worry about it too much.
Thanks, Simon
Much appreciated - every time I visit London something goes wrong and I wanted to be prepared. Now I can relax and look forward to spending all of Tuesday in a subterranean conference venue, listening to presentations on database management. Woohoo!
Congestion
They route people through the station via certain paths, the station can get a little slow to move around - between 4pm and 8pm. But it certainly doesn't merit trying to avoid the station.
