ATM- Further Podcast Listening?
Posted by tantamount on 16 January 2012 - 1:05pm.
I start a new job next week, which involves my first commute using public transport for quite a while. The Word Podcast won't get me through the week, so can the Massive recommend any other podcasts that are worth a listen?
Thanks!

Several, but
what topics are you interested in?
My current favourites
Greg Proops Worlds Smartest Man is brilliant. More impressive still when you have been listening to them each week over 6 months. He is a bright and funny man.
The Bugle (assuming it is continuing) is great.
The Moth is often very good.
From the BBC, Danny Baker, Fighting Talk and Desert Island Discs do it for me.
The Bugle seems to be alive and well
It is also still free as far as I can see.
Their back episodes aren't available in iTunes at the moment, but you can find them here.
The Moth
aired this episode last year. It's one of the most moving things I've ever heard. I thoroughly recommend giving up 15 minutes of your life to it. An astonishingly powerful story.

We've done this one many times before
so judicious use of the 'Search' box might yield some good results.
Still, for what it's worth, here's my recommendations
In Our Time
Material World
NPR Car Talk
Adam and Joe on 6 Music
Danny Baker's Radio 5 show
Radio 4 Great Lives
Radio 4 Documentary Of The Week
There are some good suggestions
on this thread from last year:

A few recent ones
Q from CBC has had a cracking array of guests recently, including PJ O Rourke, Tom Waits, Gilian Welch, Ryan Adams, Elbow, David Cronenberg & Demetri Martin.
99% Invisible is about architecture and design and is fairly short, but interesting.
LA Review of Books has an interview with music critic Simon Reynolds.
On Being has an interesting interview with Roseanne Cash.
Both The AV Club's Reasonable Discussions and APM's Dinner Party have changed recently. Reasonable Discussions has moved to a bi-weekly with a longer discussion of the arts in general and Dinner Party is now an hour long, with no real loss in quality.
Thanks for the responses....
I thought a similar query had been posted before. I shall have a look at the links.
Newer ones
Since the last query, there are likely to have been some new podcasts which have started up (and some that have finished - e.g., Collings and Herrin podcast).
Speaking of Herrin(g) - his daily blog "Warming Up" is now available as a podcast. The blog is often very funny as well as being an insight into the working life of a comedian who has had/is having some success but isn't at the stadia-filling levels of M. McIntyre or P. Kay (Peter, not Phil).

Turning to Sport... it seems to be filed under comedy, but this is the best podcast out there involving a middle-aged man playing himself at snooker whilst also commentating and refereeing. It's "Me1 vs Me2" snooker. Unlike professional snooker players, who have it easy, this is the podcast of Richard Herring playing himself at snooker in his spare room with the added challenges of (i) ironing board, space hopper, old sofa and piles of unsold copies of "Bye Bye Balham" hampering his play, (ii) poor chalk which doesn't actually go onto the tip of the cue, (iii) not really knowing the rules of snooker and (iv) not really being able to play snooker.
A must for all sports fans*.

* who like listening to a middle-aged man talking to himself and playing snooker whilst his girlfriend is upstairs making sandwiches.
You are Richard Herring aren't you?
and I claim my £5...
My faves...
The Football Ramble
NPR All Songs Considered
Desert Island Discs
