ATM: FPO's 40th Birthday

Leedsboy's picture

Some of you on this site are very attentive, lovely, thoughtful and creative people. I need your help.

It's the FPO's 40th in a few months. I reckon I can get the kids looked after for a night or two but I would love to do something very special and romantic. It doesn't have to be a big, flash thing, just relaxing and a chance to give us both a bit of time together.

Travel is ok but I would ideally like something within an hour or two of West London in order to maximise the time.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Spa hotel

You can't beat a night or two in a nice spa hotel. Rest, treatments, civilised. Done it several times on special occasions and it never fails.

I can recommend

Cowley Manor, which is between Cirencester and Cheltenham. A visit there earlier in my courtship is one of the main reasons I now have a GLW.

Dammit, I'm female and I'll be 40 eventually.

I wish I could think of something really ace to suggest, but I'm all out of suggestions.

Frankly, I'd be happy if someone made me a cup of tea and ran me a bath.

Given that I can't suggest anything myself, I must say that Twang's idea is a really lovely one, I bet Leedsgirl will be thrilled.

PS Lastminute.com often do 2 for 1 spa breaks, so keep an eye out x

Lovely. The supplementary piece of advice I'd offer is book yer facials, massage, pedicure or whatever in advance. Invariably they are fully booked up by the time the day arrives.

You could take a trip on the Orient Express

from London to York or the West Country. My wife and I have been on it a couple of times - great food, very nostalgic and some half decent entertainment. Not sure of the cost but last time I checked there were some good packages.

First tip

Don't go on to a public web forum and announce how old she is *smiley, winky, jokey face here*

Sound bet, Leeds...

...I've been here for ages and I didn't have a bloody clue what it was till a few weeks ago...!

I think Twang's on the money too: funny thing is, my FPO was looking at a discounted 4 star Spa Hotel weekend near Dublin yesterday - one of those one day offers, must be booked today things - and we hummed and hah-ed about it... and sort of didn't do anything out of an unspoken tendency to prudence. Because she's, well, prudent and I earn a crap salary. And then... today she gets an unexpected tax rebate in four figures. Still, I daresay there'll be another of those one-day-only offers along again before too long...

Seaside

An out of season trip to the seaside. There's something lovely about standing on the pier or promenade enjoying the sea breeze.

The Kent or Sussex coast would be the obvious choice.

The Cotswolds

Or a trip to the Cotswolds. Would she enjoying wandering round picture postcard villages? Loads of nice pubs and restaurants too.

Hour or two from West London?

Jump on the Eurostar to Paris ? or jump on a plane from Heathrow to Amsterdam ?

Either option doesn't have to be posh or a fortune - a meander round for a couple of nights would be perfect. OR...

I've always fancied treating the FPO to a couple of nights in a Lighthouse (well I'd enjoy it !) I can't think of anything better - bit of peace & quiet, few walks etc etc. I think you can organise through the national trust.

Another thought

Who was her teen idol? As a wedding gift (kinda), I was able to take MrsH (she's gorgeous!) to meet Paul Young, after one of his Mexican band gigs. Really easy to arange and only cost the gig tickets, freeing up funds for an actual pressie. Teenage wish fulfillment for her and a lovely warm glow for me.This may not work if she was a huge George Michael/U2 fan, but Brossette, Aha, etc could be possible.
