ATM: Flip type videos

JohnH's picture

It's Mrs H (she's gorgeous)'s birthday shortly & I was thinking of getting her a Flip type camcorder. I wonder if any of the massive have opinions on these? Are there better alternatives? I'm thinking it would be good for those times a normal one is too much faff. We're on a Mac and ideally I'd like it to talk directly to iMovie. Planning to spend around £100. Any ideas?
Thanks.

I've got one

To be honest John I'm not sure I'd bother - The main problem I have is holding the damn thing steady enough to avoid a degree of camera shake that makes the thing pretty much unwatchable on a decent sized screen.

That's probably down to me as much as the camera, although the ergonomics do make it very difficult to hold in such a way that you would minimise camera shake.

Others experiences may vary...

Buy a used iPhone 3GS

It will sync without a problem and the video function works well for me.

Flip got ditched

So you can pick them up dirt cheap now.

You won't get any support if it goes wrong so factor that in when deciding. I agree with Paul that all those handheld upright cameras are buggers to hold still but the image stabilisation in the latest iMovie fixes that so don't let it stop you.

As for my opinion, I wouldn't buy one. you get perfectly good HD movies from most small cameras these days so if you don't want a smart phone (the 3GS picture quality is not great compared to a dedicated camera) go and buy a £100 photo camera and just pick one with a 720p video function.

Like most of these

I got one of these

Within your budget by 1p. Canon Legria from Argos.

NB you need a Class 6 SD card on top of this. Very light, Mrs T likes it. Not really HD tho. Perfectly usable tho.

See here

NB - they do funky colours!
