ATM: Brittany. Tips Any?
Posted by Leedsboy on 5 August 2011 - 9:49am.
Am off to exotic climes soon staying in Northern Brittany just west of St. Malo. I have invested in a guide book but, in my experience, the Massive are a knowledgable bunch. So any family friendly tips? Any recommended beers and cidres to try?
Thanks in advance.

The
"Ooops I Did It Again" video is a classic of it's kind. (Someone had to so it might as well be me)
I believe
that's Britney. I admit it is how I say Brittany though.
St Briac-Sur-Mer
Lovely place, whole series of lovely little beaches and islands, and a strong air of M Hulot's holiday. Good golf course apparently not that I have ever played (its scenic anyway)
We've had several holidays in and around there over the years and its all very easy and very friendly. If you're self catering the farmers co-op supermarket at la Richardais on the main road is good. Dinard is very pretty. We've always gone Brittany Ferries from Portsmouth because that ferry trip is lovely and is a big part of the holiday but I guess its too late to specify that now. The whole Rance valley is lovely actually, south of the HEP dam (which you can't actually really see that clearly)
The St Malo Aquarium is great if you have kids and not bad in any case.
History stuff - Dinan and Combourg are great. The lighthouses along teh coast are beautiful and there is a mad castle on the way at Fort la Latte
You can venture further afield but you'll end up spending too much time in the car, which seems a shame. Though I loved Josselin which is about an hour away on the Nantes canal.
Supermarkets are full of a bewildering variety of hallucinogenic cidres and local beers!
You'll have a fab time
Le Mont St. Michel
It is as lovely as it looks.

I even made it all the way to the top for mass on the Sunday morning.
Another vote
...for Le Mont St. Michel but I would advise getting there early as it gets very busy.
The walled city of St Malo is also worth checking out.
It is worth remembering that all of the small towns and villages effectively close from 12:00 to 14:00 for lunch so plan your day accordingly.
Seafood is excellent all over the region, especially the oysters. A fruits de mer washed down with a botle of Muscaet su Lie is not a bad way to spend a couple of hours!
St Cast is very nice
in fact, the bit between St Malo and St Cast, along the emerald coast is super. You can walk across to an island at St Jacut-de-la-Mer, near St Briac, at low tide , which is delightful.
Dinan is one of my fave places, park in the market square, around the ramparts, and walk down the hill to the port, it's fascinating.
All in all, it's fab.
