ATM: Any good books on The Kinks?

Retro Man's picture

I'm currently obsessed by The Kinks - I've always liked them but generally been satisified with the "Ultimate Collection" greatest hits compilation. But over the years I've found myself listening to them more and more and on the weekend I even did a little Muswell Hill/Highgate DIY excursion to take in some of the landmarks inspired by the recent showing of Ray Davies' "Imaginary Man" documentary.

However, the two Julien Temple documentaries were extremely unsatisfactory as they both missed out huge chunks of important back story. For example Dave's stroke and rehabilitation was not even mentioned in "Kinkdom Come" and Ray's shooting in New Orleans not even touched on in "Imaginary Man", very strange! Also, both were very reticent on the legendary punch-ups and tensions between them.

Both movies also totally glossed over any contribution from later band members who took over from Mick Avory and Pete Quaife.

I've had a quick flick through Amazon but there is not much info there at all - can anyone recommend a decent biography on The Kinks please?

Thanks!

Jon Savage actually wrote an

Jon Savage actually wrote an 'official' biography of the band for Faber back in the 1980s; maybe that's now too long ago? The Davies' brothers own published memoirs are a wee bit irritating to be honest.

Thanks, yes I saw that one on Amazon but

there's 1 new on sale for £111.86p...!! 2nd hand ones are from £26.00, still a bit pricey. Have you read it? Any good?

Possibly

I read a book on The Kinks around that time, it may have been this one but I am not sure. The one I read mentioned alternative takes that the casual or neophyte listener could not possibly get to hear.I got so annoyed it went bak to the library, and I have yet to hear the alternate version of Sitting By The Riverside that was mentioned. Maybe it was some other author.

That said, the sleeve notes to Buzzcocks Product box set were by him, and contained a lengthy discourse on the Spiral Scratch EP, which was not included in the set, and unobtainable at the time.

Jon Savage

I read this one a few years ago and thought it was as much as anyone would need to know about the Kinks. I'd recommend it from memory

When I bought X-Ray

first time round I thought it was a bit confusing, overwritten even. Then, a few years later when I knew more about The Kinks I reread it and thought it was brilliant. You should get it.

I too am currently obsessing on all things Kink

having been lead astray by the NME in the 70s assuring me they had taken the Yankee dollar and surrendered to vile arena rock of the worst order. Nonsense of course, but what did the 15 year old me know?

'Muswell Hillbillies' and 'Lola v Powerman ...' now on constant repeat.

I've just finished Nick Hasted's 'The Story of the Kinks' which was a great overview, dealt with the breakdowns and the breakups, and finished up in 2011. I'd recommend it.

Now starting to re-read 'X-Ray' which as Mr Fade observes is much better second time around.

Thanks for the comments...

I think I will give "X-Ray" another go, I tried reading it when it first came out but gave up as it was just too weird.

Seems like there's a bit of a gap in the market for a decent updated biography though.

Jon Savage book

I read this when it came out, its good and tells you a lot about the music. But for me the best thing was the fantastic array of photographs, which have that innocent '60's star enjoys their fan mail and a cigar' feel which always makes me feel cosy. The design of the book was by Neville Brody, at about the time he was uber-cool for designing the Face magazine....

Has anyone read either

'Ray Davies, Not Like Everybody Else' or Nick Hasted's new biography of The Kinks?
