ATM: accidentally erased iPod

Nick Duvet's picture

I bought an iPod for a friend and loaded thousands of tracks onto it in the summer. I've just added some more via iTunes but I when I check the pod's music list, only the new music appears. I fear I may have sync'd it wrongly and erased the whole bloody lot. The iPod is sync'd to the same desktop computer as when I originally loaded it.

I have looked on the net and there are sites offering software that claims to be able to retrieve lost songs. Do they work, or does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks

Did you originally set up a playlist in iTunes

and set itunes to sync the contents of that playlist with the iPod?

If so, check that iTunes is still set to sync that playlist with that iPod.

iProb

I think that, unless you still have the songs on computer you originally synced it to, then you have lost them.
Not sure how a 3rd party programme can retrieve them - sorry.

If you've lost them off the desktop but still have them on iPod

then Senuti will retrieve them back into the desktop computer.

If you don't have them on the desktop machine nor on the iPod then you're going to struggle :-(

sometimes

my iPod decides to lose tracks as well. However, they remain on my computer, and so if I start the iPod from factory settings again, whilst it takes an absolute age to re-sync, all of the music ends up on the iPod. As the music remained on the computer anyway, the only data that changes is on the iPod, all play counts, etc should remain the same.

A drastic measure but it works for me.

But as Stimpy says, if you don't have the mp3s anymore, then kiss them goodbye, they're not coming back.

This is EXACTLY

why I steer well clear of i-anything, and only use the tunes variety for Podcasts.

The word 'fail' is spelled s,y,n,c.

I do hope you get your files back. If you do, can you transfer them to an MP3 player that is Apple agnostic? I do hope so.

if the tracks are still oniTunes

Plug in the iPod, click on the iPod in the left hand column of the iTunes screen, chose Restore iPod, when you have restored it, re-sync it with iTunes.

This has worked a couple of times for me.

If the tracks are no longer in iTunes, then the problem's with your computer, not the iPod....

I'm afraid

I have to agree with everything above. I don't think there is any software out there that will be able to retrieve anything that is wiped off an ipod.

Most of the software is designed to take the tracks back off the ipod and put it back on the pc/laptop if it had been wiped there.

Obviously, if you have all the songs on your pc still it is just a case of loading it back onto the ipod.

I think your problem might have come from synching it across two sources. It will have looked for the material from the original source, seen it's not there and wiped it.

Just a thought re: missing mp3s

If they are no longer on your computer, you may be able to redownload them from iTunes without having to pay again. I did this recently. On iTunes, there is now a "Purchased" section which tells you what you've bought from them. Clicking on the little cloud next to the track allows you to download it again. I did this recently for some stuff that had disappeared off my computer and iPod. If not, maybe contact Apple, as I had a download that wouldn't convert so they sent it to me again. They're quite good from my experience on getting back to you.

I hadn't thought about it until I got back yesterday, hence not putting in the original reply.

Hope it goes well.

As long as you've...

... got the songs on the iPod you can retrieve them - even without additional software - but it's time consuming and involves accessing hidden files that have been scrambled (i.e. all over the place).

And Spotify are at it too ...

https://www.spotify.com/uk/help/faq/ipod-integration/sync-your-device-wi...

I note that there is no facility to disable this default function - OK, so it doesn't automatically delete your stuff straight off, but it's the first screen to come up when you turn on Spotify when your iPod is plugged in - why would I want to delete all my music carefully built up elsewhere, with all the Spotify stuff instead?
