At last, London is ready for the Silver Seas. They're "a bit mainstream" but we love them. Put the 15th in your diary

David Hepworth's picture

ImageThe Silver Seas are my favourite group. Danny Baker says they're "the best group in the world". I've offered to give anyone who bought "Chateau Revenge" and didn't like it their money back. Simon Mayo and Bob Harris are among the others enthusing. (6Music think their single "Best Things In Life" is really good but "a bit mainstream" which is as good as a five star recommendation.) The whole thing's on Spotify if you want to hear for yourself.

And now they're coming to the UK! Even better they're coming to a venue just around the corner from our office deep in the heart of London's swinging Islington. The Silver Seas will be playing at the Islington Academy on Thursday, September 15th. You can get tickets here. You can hear them on Spotify here.

I'll be there. Fraser will be there. I'm starting to hear from other members of the Massive who'll be there. Who knows? Maybe Baker will be prised away from the Internet long enough to attend. So come one, come all and let's make a night of it.

We could even get up a drinking party beforehand. What do you say?

Chateau Revenge seems to

Chateau Revenge seems to have dropped off Spotify ... Annoying when that happens! Although I gather it's being given a proper UK release later this month, so hopefully it will reappear.

To quote Bart Simpson

"Dad! No one cares about any of your stupid dinosaur bands! You have the worst, lamest taste in music ever."

But I posted this news a month ago so hope you can all still get tickets to go. And that you all have a great time.

My favourite track from Chateau Revenge is

Jane, posted underneath. Their music reminds me of Josh Rouse but with a bit more attitude. Would love to see them live but can't make this one. Hope you all have a great time too.

Don't know Josh Rouse

But that track would happily fit in on:

Photobucket

This is not a bad thing, by the way,

I'll just refer you to

Josh Rouse's 1972 and Nashville albums! Terrific stuff and definitely coming from the same 'Theme Park'!

That's lovely...

Duly ordered...

Daniel Tashian

worked with Rouse on 1972 & Nashville, including co-writing 3 tracks on the latter...

This just in

Baker's coming. Probably be a bit like this.

Silver Seas

I'm going and so's my wife. Really looking forward to it.
It's her birthday, would pre-gig drinks with the assembled great and the good of her husband's favourite magazine be a suitable gift?

"A drinking party beforehand"

Sounds like an awfully good plan.

I'll have to go listen to some Silver Seas before I commit, though.

0
Lenny Law | 1 September 2011 - 2:54pm

Checking Napster..

Only High Society and Starry Gazey Pie. First track on High Society is ace, though.

0
Lenny Law | 1 September 2011 - 2:57pm

I can't make it to the gig.

Will someone please yell from the floor to the band and demand to know, "When will we be able to buy Starry Gazey Pie* in the UK?".

If anyone makes it backstage, please apply a friendly headlock, threaten chinese-burns and demand "When will we be able to buy Starry Gazey Pie* in the UK?".

If you notice which hotel the band are staying at post-gig, kindly leave a note at the front desk there asking, "When will we be able to buy Starry Gazey Pie* in the UK?".

Can you tell I'm a mad keen fan?

* the proper CD thing, not some nebulous file of ones and zeros.

A Pedant Writes

Surely all a CD does is hold a nebulous file of ones and zeros?

*big cheesy grin*

Sorely tempted to go - I'm in London for the Mingle on the 16th and have taken the whole day off....so would only have to go down the afternoon before....

I can resist everything except temptation...

EDIT: Ah feck it. Ticket booked.

ROM

rather than DASD.

Polycarbonate, paper and aluminium, and of course, lossless (within Orange Book limits). It's a quality and reassurance thing.

Do please try to ascertain the whereabouts of the aforementioned fishy meal for me.

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 1 September 2011 - 6:38pm

I understand, I really do.

Assuming I get down there (need to extend my hotel stay first) then I shall have a look on the inevitable merch stand for proper hard copies.

Can't promise I'll do headlocks and stuff...

Paul Waring | 1 September 2011 - 7:06pm

Band sounds average

but drinks sounds good.

0
eddie g | 1 September 2011 - 3:29pm

I'll be there

hope to meet the gang ...

I'm not 'connected' so if anything is arranged please let me know!

0
niscum | 1 September 2011 - 3:29pm

That's the day before the main event...

the London Massive get together. I hope that means that Fraser and Mr Hepworth and their Word colleagues are rocknroll enough for TWO big nights out in a row! I'd be dissapointed if they cry off with hangovers and tiredness...

2
Retro Man | 1 September 2011 - 3:46pm

Count me in too...

... and the GLW who needed no persuasion. Tickets booked as soon as they went on sale. My blog contributions are few and far between but as a subscriber of 4+ years I assume I still quality as a massive member?

1
oxfordpaul | 1 September 2011 - 10:06pm

Bums. Can't do it.

I bet, though, that the drink and conversation beforehand is much, much more fun than than the gig.

0
Lenny Law | 1 September 2011 - 11:00pm

London Calling

Can't find Chateau Revenge on Spotify, but I reckon I'll buy it at some point, as I like their music. Sounds like it will be a wonderful evening, sadly can't make that one, hopefully they will tour in Yorkshire one day. Had a wonderful night in The Lexington and Islington a week ago tonight, but back in the country tonight.

0
David Wright | 2 September 2011 - 7:17pm

I'll be there!

It's going to be an astoundingly Word sort of week. I'm doing one of the turns at True Stories Told Live on the Wednesday (eep!), Silver Seas on the Thursday and then the Mingle on the Friday.

My husband is convinced I am having an affair with all of you.

Those divorce papers

will stretch to a second page.

Don't forget to take your glasses back to the bar

0
DogFacedBoy | 3 September 2011 - 6:04pm

I'll be there too

I've been following them since ooh...all of eight weeks ago when I heard Daniel Tashian on the podcast.

First gig since The Hold Steady in 2009.

Really looking forward to it.

There Are Some ... | 5 September 2011 - 4:11pm

I'm in.

Best band in the world. Chateau Revenge Blue & Red on constant play here.

0
SirTerence | 7 September 2011 - 7:00pm

I'm a be there too

I love Chateau Revenge very much. I won't be able to get there until about 9.30, sadly, but hopefully it'll just be kicking off then. If I get a cancellation I'll come and seek y'all out.

0
Rosbif | 7 September 2011 - 7:42pm

If you can't see them tomorrow, you can hear them this afternoon

The Silver Seas are live in session on Danny Baker's show on BBC London this afternoon.

Just ordered the album.....

first hearing for me - my first purchase on a word blog recommendation - TA!

0
herringbrother | 14 September 2011 - 2:33pm

Drinking party?

Was a pre-gig drink organised in the end? If so, where is it going to be?

0
Dave Holley | 14 September 2011 - 5:36pm

I shall either be in The Angelic....

...or Wagamama. Depending on whether hunger of thirst strikes first.

Both very near to each other and the venue.

0
David Hepworth | 15 September 2011 - 11:02am

Stranded in St Pancras

As fate would have it, my wife is staying in a hotel down the road and rather than sitting at home alone and drinking myself into a stupor while slowly rocking back and forth, I will come and join you before joining her. And drink myself etc etc.

1
Captain Underpants | 15 September 2011 - 9:54am

Wahay and whoopee

I'll be there too, will try and pop into pub first. Any idea what time they'll be on stage?

Just had a couple of weeks with mostly Silver Seas on the headphones, blimey they're good.
