"As I lie in my hospital bed..." sang Roger Daltrey on 'Sister Disco'

stimpy's picture

Well, as I lie in my hospital bed I'm using this forum as a way of keeping my spirits up - along with an iPod full of In Our Times and Word Podcasts.

On Friday I was rushed into hospital with a suspected ruptured bladder. This involved a certain amount of undignified writhing and screaming on my part - as well as a ride in an ambulance with the blue lights and the 'nee-naws' going.

Since then I've been lying in bed with an antibiotic drip in one arm and an 'on demand' morphine drip in the other waiting for the infection to be cleared up before they can operate. (just on 48 hours so far).

I don't usually indulge in what the Candyman would call 'self-regarding nonsense' but I just wanted to say thanks for unknowingly keeping my spirits up :-)

The combination of free wi-fi and an iPad is a wonderful thing.

Dig the morphine Dude

I was rushed in a few years back (sans blue light) but when they hooked me up to that it was fantastic.
You'll get sorted man, dinna fear, the NHS isn't fulla horror stories, and I can testify.

get well soon

No need to apologise Stimpy

How could we wish you a speedy recovery if we didn't know you were indisposed in the first place?

Get well soon.

Gatz | 15 May 2011 - 8:59pm

Count yourself lucky

Last year I was in the coronary care unit for a week (I broke my leg and post-op suffered a large clot on my lung). No wi-fi, no telly, no mobile phone, nothing with a plug (has to be checked by an electrician). It was the longest week of my life.

On the upside, after discharge home, I discovered this blog.

Enjoy the morphine and get better soon.

Sounds as if you have good reason

for a little "self regarding nonsense".
Get well soon Stimpy.

Chris Young | 15 May 2011 - 9:06pm

Did you arrive at hospital like the start of this clip, stimpy?

Sounds painful, fella. Get well soon.

(Video is from Carry On Doctor)

A ruptured bladder!!! That sounds horrific!!

0

Hope you're on the mend soon!

0
Helena Handcart | 15 May 2011 - 9:56pm

Been trying to find that famous interview with Graham Hill from his hospital bed to post here for cheering-up puposes, but alas, the internet has failed me.

All the best to you...

I'm sending you a bottle of Lucozade, some grapes and a 50 CD Grateful Dead Tour Rehearsals '72 box set through the ether.

And in the meantime, here's some Led Zeppelin.

0
Patrick Crowther | 15 May 2011 - 11:07pm

"Self regarding nonsense"...?

...here? HERE?!? Surely some mistake...

What you need Stimps is some cheery balladry from Ken Middleton and his ukulele. No, no - I insist! (And get well soon...)

0
Colin H | 15 May 2011 - 10:59pm

Get well. We mean it maan.

Whatever you do, avoid episodes of Casualty, House, Holby City or Quincy. They will freak you out.

0
Beany | 15 May 2011 - 11:08pm

Blocky-off wee-department bloke things.

They smart, they do.

My wife's an ITU nurse. She demanded an iPad after she had a play with one that one of her patients had. She also notices that the (few) patients who have one and, in her department, are well enough to use one, seem to get better quicker because they are, basically, happier.

0
Lenny Law | 15 May 2011 - 11:10pm

Oddly enough, it's attracted a lot of attention in here

Most of the nurses know sort of what it is - "Ooo is that one of those iPad things?" - but don't know what it can do. The younger ones I point at Facebook, the older ones I pull up a slideshow of the family and they're hooked :-)

It certainly makes lying in bed for three days with no reason to get up fell like an extended Sunday morning -well above the waist anyway.

0
stimpy | 16 May 2011 - 8:42am

Best wishes

... and here's some more morphine if you run out.

1
Jon | 15 May 2011 - 11:33pm

I'm

crossing my legs and grimacing in deepest sympathy. Best wishes for a speedy recovery, fella :-)

0
Black Type | 15 May 2011 - 11:34pm

There's only one thing better than being in hospital ...

and that's not being in hospital.
Getting out of hospital is a fantastic feeling. Keep it in sight.

And I didn't think morphine was all it's cracked up to be. I vividly remember being visited by my in-laws. Needless to say, they didn't.

Get well, sick boy.

0
malcolm.bruce | 15 May 2011 - 11:52pm

I'd say that was another thumbs up for the

Morph!

I feel so cheap now. I didn't get the rotating blue lights.
I did pass the Glasgow Academy on my way to the Southern General and Audio Slave were loading in.
Does that count?

0
James Blast | 16 May 2011 - 12:04am

Grapes

I'd send some grapes, but they may be a bit rank by the time they reach from here.

Get well soon.

0
chrisf | 16 May 2011 - 1:51am

Ouch!

Sounds bad, but at least you seem to be getting medical care from this guy...

0
FakeGeordie | 16 May 2011 - 3:47pm

Get well soon stimps.

You're in good hands. As my quack said to me when I told him I'd looked summat up on Google, "How'd you think I learned all this shit?".

If you're stuck there on the wi-fi for any longer, feel free to post requests - I can Divshare you your own playlist if you like.

1
Vulpes Vulpes | 16 May 2011 - 6:14pm

Heh, thanks Vulp but the FPO brought in my 1TB USB HDD

and Macbook so, aside from the pain, it's a pretty good existence - confined to bed, class A narcotics being pumped straight into my arm, all my music/comedy on tap, 'waitress' service at the push of a button... What more does a man need?

1
stimpy | 16 May 2011 - 6:42pm

"COLD TERKEEEEEEEEEEY 'as got me on the run..."

Bummer dude, THE MAN came round earlier and took away my drugs. Just a fluid drip to keep me hydrated now. They reckon all the infection is cleared (4 days) so its now time for scans etc to see what's going on inside, then surgery...

3
stimpy | 17 May 2011 - 2:01pm

Blimey

Get well soon

0
Five-Centres | 17 May 2011 - 2:30pm

Get well

Loved your
"Ay ay ay ay ay ay ay want to see the brrrrright lights tonight" riposte.
Hope all is well with you.

0
hubertrawlinson | 17 May 2011 - 3:13pm

My wife is a nurse.

She confirms that all the nurses will have a look at your willy. And then they'll all compare notes.

But they don't take photographs whilst you're under anaesthetic.

Often.

Unless it's a REALLY big one.

2
Lenny Law | 17 May 2011 - 5:39pm

Oh dear... It's not really looking it's best at the present.

And I suspect that as the operation gets nearer it'll get smaller and even more withdrawn.

1
stimpy | 17 May 2011 - 6:07pm

Purchase a prosthetic MONSTER bell end

Which growls

Good luck with your recovery!

0
FakeGeordie | 17 May 2011 - 9:14pm

"prosthetic MONSTER bell end"

TMF.. oh, you know..

1
Lenny Law | 17 May 2011 - 10:25pm

Do you have to be in hospital

for nurses to have a look? Or is it a service more generally available?

2
fortuneight | 18 May 2011 - 1:36pm

Don't get TOO used to that pain relief ...

... all the best

0
Johnny Topaz | 17 May 2011 - 11:23pm

Belated best wishes Stimpers old bean

Hope you're fully on the road to recovery

0
Sheev | 21 May 2011 - 7:15pm

Back home since yesterday...

Everything seems ok - tests, scans etc next week will confirm - but I feel like I've been repeatedly smacked in the groin with a Vic Reeves comedy frying pan.

Confined to bed for the next few days as the infection etc has made me as week as a kitten but at least it's my own bed.

Thanks for everyone's kind words over the last week :-)

1
stimpy | 21 May 2011 - 9:35pm

That's great news

well done.

How are you managing without the nurses & the morphine? Or has the NHS provided those at home as well?

0
tiggerlion | 21 May 2011 - 10:13pm

Meanwhile, on a blog frequented by nurses..

..a new thread starts.

"Photographs of drummers' willies"

2
Lenny Law | 21 May 2011 - 11:21pm

With and without morphine

And with and without the nearby presence of a nurse

Glad you're back home Stimpy take it easy on the old paradiddles - they've been through a rough old time of it :-)

0
FakeGeordie | 23 May 2011 - 9:45am

Glad you're back in the land of the Dead...

(the Grateful Dead that is). The last few days must have been horrible for you and I'm glad you're on the mend.
