Arena: "Produced by George Martin"

millymollymandy's picture

Just a public service announcement - if you didn't see this programme last night, there are still 6 days left to catch it on iPlayer

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b010t9hz

90 astonishing minutes, only 40 of which include you-know-who. How can any one person be responsible for producing Nellie the Elephant, the theme to the Archers (and 633 Squadron), Spike Milligan's Q5 Piano Song (yes, Beany, and The Man In The Bowler Hat) AND all those others, beloved of mono boxed set owners everywhere?

My favourite moment however was listening to the epic "Live and Let Die", intercut with pictures of a young George Martin looking like the quintessential James Bond, followed by his demonstration of the recipe for the perfect martini. Move over Daniel Craig (never thought I'd say that).

I really enjoyed this

and would have enjoyed it more if Mrs BP hadn't talked through most of it. I may well download it.

A snooker fan too

As if there weren't enough reasons to admire the debonair Mr. M. :-)

I've just finished watching it

and it was a wonderful documentary. The one word that kept coming through was 'affection'; he had great affection for his artists, and they had the same for him.

Who's with me for popping along to the next Garden Party?

I never said a word

I have recorded the programme so don't give the plot away. Did the actors playing the HJH do them justice?

Oh it was a proper documentary rather than a drama documentary with some regular BBC bod making a hash of George. I shall save it for Friday when there is nothing else on the box.

I've recorded/not yet seen too...

...though I hope they at least mention this, George's 1974 production of the Mahavishnu Orchestra + LSO. That's him in the centre of the band pic on the left. He also produced a Jeff Beck LP around this time, inc. the sublime Diamond Dust. We don't hear enough about George Martin: the Fusion Years...

Shame there was no Stackridge

but otherwise lovely.

Macca's hair is a bit odd though isn't it?

Not much Fabs (thankfully cos we've all heard those stories)

lots of Peter Sellars n other bits of his career. This dramatic part of his life didn't get mentioned thou*

*sorry but everytime I see George being interviewed this occurs

Oh

I've just watched it through various means... I'm so pleased I've lived in this man's time. Always had a fondness for Sir G through endless HJH docs - but this was just beautiful. What a gent.

Annoyingly...

...it transpires that the show didn't get recorded chez moi after all. Don't suppose anyone here could supply a copy on DVD? (Or even better two - I was all set to send one to my friend Trev in Australia.) I'm sure we can come to some arrangement...
