Are you in any way a Rock Virgin?

littleamericancrop_0.jpgIt's widely assumed that when you've reached my age you've done everything of a rockular nature you could ever wish to. That's not necessarily so. For instance, until last year I had never spent the night at a rock festival - and you could argue that Cornbury is so civilised it still doesn't really count. I could give you some high-flown theory as to why but the truth is I couldn't be bothered and I'm not very good at camping.
Anyway, the point is that everybody's got something in the rock fan line they have never got round to doing. Maybe there are people who've never danced, bought a record, got an autograph, listened to Radio One, been to a stadium gig, mimed playing the bass to a Level 42 record, been clubbing or held a lighter aloft.
Send us your confessions of Rock Virginity, no matter how trivial.

I have never...

camped out overnight at a festival - as some wise man once said "I am at two with nature"

Riccardo Gargiulo | 6 January 2008 - 8:54am

I have never got round to writing a letter of apology to...

Strawberry Switchblade. In the mid 80s, a friend of mine was trying to convince me that Howard Jones was a great artist, and paid for a ticket for me to go and see him at Hammersmith Odeon. I was going to take some convincing. Anyway, the support band that evening was the 'Switchblade'. Good grief... they were shocking. And I was drunk. To say I heckled loudly is something of an understatement. They played very quietly, I have a loud voice. Their set finished soon after. Whether this was as a result of my behaviour, I shall never know. Anyway, I've felt very guilty about this for a long, long time. I really should have written them a little card... 'sorry I ruined your concert'... but somehow I found other things to be getting on with...

As for Howard Jones... let's just say my shelves aren't sagging under the weight of his back catalogue.

Patrick Crowther | 6 January 2008 - 8:59am

I was at that gig

Well I dont remember your heckling but I do remember that concert. I am ashamed to say it was my first ever and I really liked Howard and his "mad" mime artist Jed. To make things even more exciting Limahl ( how the f- do you spell his name) was in the audience complete with full set of hair braiding. The polka dotted ninnies Strawberries weren't much cop though.

yorkch | 9 January 2008 - 5:51pm

I have never

seen one of my all-time favourite bands live, despite having their entire back catalogue in numerous formats, supporting them since 1981, having them be my teenage crutch when going through those 'difficult years' and having so many opportunities to do so it's ridiculous.

Somehow, as the years went by, the images in my head and the music on vinyl became sacrosanct; the thought that they might not live up to those images when live always swayed my decision. Worse too, everyone I speak to says they're great live.

Weird, huh?

Oeufman | 6 January 2008 - 9:39am

And who, pray tell...

was the band?

Patrick Crowther | 6 January 2008 - 9:49am

Well

spotted. Marillion.

Not your standard Word fare, but it takes all sorts.

Oeufman | 6 January 2008 - 9:54am

Ahhh!

Hmmm... Marillion. I used to really like them when I was a teenager. I saw them on the Misplaced Childhood tour and enjoyed it enormously, spiders wandering aimlessly within the warmth of a shadow and all...

Patrick Crowther | 6 January 2008 - 9:57am

Well I Never

Have I ever heard Pet Sounds?
No.

Mr Drayton | 6 January 2008 - 10:51am

It's really good

You should listen to it. It's really good.

Richard Lowe | 6 January 2008 - 2:23pm

I've never

seen the point of autographs.
heard a note of Trout Mask Replica.
or camped out at a festival (attended all 3 days of Reading in 1975, went home every night and came back the next morning).

Philip Bryer | 6 January 2008 - 11:08am

Almost forgot...

...and I always felt silly wearing 'love beads'. Whether wrapped several times around the wrist, or once round the neck with one loop tight to the throat and the other dangling free, I still felt like a right idiot.

Philip Bryer | 6 January 2008 - 11:13am

Never

bought Pet Sounds either or Sgt Pepper (or any other Beatles studio album)
stayed overnight at a festival - nearest I got was last yr Peace and Love in Sweden when I stayed with relations in town (it's a town centre-based festival, how civilised, they still had a campsite though)
filled a plastic bottle with my own urine (or anyone elses come to that) or threw it at anybody
Have mimed Level 42 style bass a la Mark King but only in a mock satirical way

Sven | 6 January 2008 - 11:48am

Never said "Yeah!"...

...when urged to let an American frontman hear me say it.

Never even said "Wanker!" when urged to let an American frontman hear me say "Yeah".

Never spun a run-out groove backwards eager to hear the voice of the devil saying "Macca's not dead but he's soon going to be rubbish".

Never bought a single issue of The Face or Smash Hits (sorry, lads).

Never owned or even tried on an Afghan. (Will an RAF greatcoat do?)

Never rubbed my hands and said "Oh, goody!" when John Peel announced a record by Captain Beefheart, The Fall or The Undertones.

Archie Valparaiso | 6 January 2008 - 1:21pm

Never heard

Pet Sounds either.
Had also never heard Astral Weeks until about 2 years ago when I bought it - I actually think much of his later stuff is a lot better.
Never liked ELP when all my friends thought they were best thing since Warburtons.
Never got the Sex Pistols but like much more from that era.
Didnt care for Nirvana either.

Steve Turner | 6 January 2008 - 1:58pm

Never

liked Elvis.

eddie g | 6 January 2008 - 2:36pm

Oh God me neither!

I know he was important/necessary etc, but I would never listen to anything of his unless coerced

muttnjeff | 6 January 2008 - 4:18pm

Me three

Never liked Elvis, not really too bothered about anybody who sung other peoples songs.

Never been (or want to go to) a festival.

Never got into the John Peel show.

But can't believe all these people who haven't heard Pet Sounds. It is truly brillant.

Paul Chandler | 6 January 2008 - 8:39pm

No iPod

I don't have one and have no plans to buy one, or any other sort of MP3 player.

Carl Parker | 6 January 2008 - 4:37pm

Amen!

Revr'nd! - ye ken the smilies Bro

as to the original Q:
no camping, not since I was a cub scout - didn't like it then, came home frozen to the bone and I didn't have to suffer through interminable support acts
Beach Boys - nope, no thankee
Beatles - bought the Magical Mystery Tour album back in the 70s because I liked their films, no I no longer own it
as to seeing my heroes live - all bar The Who (with and without Moon), Type O Negative, The Strawbs and Roxy Music, those as passed me bye:
Zeppelin
ELP
Genesis (with Gabriel, have seen them with Hackett tho')
Voivod (original line-up)
The Sisters Of Mercy (FALAA line-up)

James Blast | 6 January 2008 - 5:03pm

No guitar hero

I played the drums in bands for years but never learnt to play the guitar, now I really wish I could. I'm debating if I should I launch myself into the 40 something guitar market...

More to the point I've never been on the guest list, and never been in a position to specify a rider (damn!).

Paul Thompson | 6 January 2008 - 4:59pm

Now we got something...

Paul - I've owned a bass guitar for many years but never learned to play - wanna form a band?

Stephen Hanley | 7 January 2008 - 1:47pm

Nearly there

4 years my beautiful electro-acoustic has sat in the corner - can I play it? You know the answer.

muttnjeff | 7 January 2008 - 11:37pm

Never blogged at all

until very recently. Still have never written to the music press. Certainly hadn't shared my thoughts on rockular matters before in public - probably shows. Not as easy as you think I reckon. Post your great thoughts to an eagerly waiting world then later look back and think there was a good point there somewhere, what happened, that wasn't what I wrote was it? Need to read through more carefully next time. Or, why did I say that? Or is it only me that has these doubts? Less is more really isn't it? Better stop now then. Think I'll go and text Radio 5.

Sven | 6 January 2008 - 5:19pm

I have never crowdsurfed...

...nor, being of 'a certain age', am I ever likely to.

I have never owned a lighter, still less held one aloft.

Paul Waring | 6 January 2008 - 5:38pm

lighter still

lighter aloftness is a sign of blandness

James Blast | 6 January 2008 - 5:52pm

Merchandise

I've never felt remotely tempted to buy a T-shirt with the name of a band on it. Or any other piece of merchandise come to that (with the exception of a Nick Cave tea towel. Why don't more acts sell tea towels at gigs?)

bengwy | 6 January 2008 - 6:25pm

Dragons Den is calling you...

I think you've stumbled upon a business oportunity here... a range of band-approved tea towels! Get them made up and subject yourself to possible humiliation from those smug twats on Dragons Den. Don't forget to value your business at £5,000,000. It is expected.

Patrick Crowther | 6 January 2008 - 6:49pm

Good idea!

I may just do that. Would I be able to interest you in a Strawberry Switchblade towel? Or maybe a Howard Jones napkin?

bengwy | 6 January 2008 - 7:17pm

Nah...

But a Robert Wyatt teatowel would be great..

Patrick Crowther | 6 January 2008 - 7:52pm

Wooo Hoooo! - ROCK TEA TOWELS! Yeah!

Joss Stone tea towel: useful phrases in both English and American.

Led Zeppelin tea towel: to be used only once every 27 years.

Oasis tea towel: Liam's guide to diplomatic protocols on one side, and Noel's guide to useful Beatles' chord progressions on the other.

Radiohead tea towel: thin and strong for hanging oneself after repeated listens to the back catalogue.

Amy Winehouse tea towel: an illustrated guide to the world's best backing bands, and how to "borrow" them.

Jamirok, er, Jammiroqui, er, the twat in the hat tea towel: a Stevie Wonder album discography.

Vulpes Vulpes | 7 January 2008 - 11:57am

Genius idea that

I would kill for a "Jamiroquai is a twat" tea towel, cant stand the bloke or his 'music'.

Surely La Winehouse's towel would come apart at the seams?

Saying that, as I type I am enjoying Yorkshire Tea in a Brewing Up With Billy Bragg mug...

sweetleftfoot | 10 January 2008 - 8:14pm

Damn!

I've done all these things, this must make me a rock n roll trollop!

Steve Cadman | 6 January 2008 - 7:58pm

Not

interested in seeing any band or performer live. Get bored after two songs.

eddie g | 6 January 2008 - 9:12pm

Do you mean you've never ever?

Seriously.

David Hepworth | 8 January 2008 - 10:06am

This is strange do you get

This is strange do you get bored listening at home?

Chris G | 9 January 2008 - 12:28pm

Shrink Wrapping

I have a huge number of albums I have never got out of the shrink wrapping ..Dig The New Breed by the Jam ...some Gruppo Sportivo Lp ...Brothers In Arms Dire Straits ....The First Simon and Garfunkel Lp ..why is this ....?

Ive never bought a tour t-shirt ....

Never held a lighter up or swayed in fact doing both at the same time would confuse me ...

Havent stood up at a gig for years ...

Never got the point of Led Zep ..even when I have felt I ought to try !

David W | 6 January 2008 - 9:37pm

Dig the new breed is a good album

You should rip the cellophane!

p.s. I've never sat down at a gig

uproar13 | 7 January 2008 - 9:25am

I don't get sleepovers

Never slept over at a festival. I like hot showers, clean toilets & dry clothes each day. Hence, I have never experienced Gladstonbury. And have no desire to as a music lover, festivals sweep away most of the noise but at least at Donnington & T in The Park you have a chance of hearing something.

Never peed in a bottle at Donnington - bit difficult with being female. Have had one land on me though :o(

laddie | 7 January 2008 - 9:14am

Oh so many things..

Never managed to reach the end of an Arcade Fire album (surely it's not just me who can't understand the hype?)
Never seen Leonard Cohen despite an obsession dating back to the mid 70's
Never pointed repeatedly into the air at a gig
Never been to a stadium gig
Never bought a Manic Street Preachers album
Never pretended I liked Nick Drake "way back"

Oh I could go on....

Spoodledude | 7 January 2008 - 11:41am

Arcade Fire

Me too, it all sounds the same to me.

Arcade Fire tea towel: for draping over the Aga handle so you look hip 'n' groovy when your meedjah friends come round.

Vulpes Vulpes | 7 January 2008 - 12:00pm

Whyowhyowhy.........

did i soil my pristine temple, deflowering myself on the altars of hipness as promulgated by the comics of the day, by "enjoying" the Mothers of Invention, King Crimson, Can and the Sex Pistols. Or for that matter, Os Mutantes and LCD Soundsystem. All utter unlistenable bollox. I have lied, Father, forgive me.
(Provocative enough for you?)
At least, to conform to the strand, I have never said I liked Queen or ELO when I didn't or until time prove me right.

Retropath2 | 7 January 2008 - 1:01pm

Keep trying chaps

There are very few of these so far which I haven't done (with the esoteric exception of not having written an apology to Strawberry Switchblade). Just a rock'n'roll slapper, that's me.

Gatz | 7 January 2008 - 1:46pm

Finally went to a festival at the age of 30, but...

I never became a part of any musical tribe. Never was a goth, a metal kid, a punk or anything else that required an appropriate uniform.

The nearest I ever came was wearing a lumberjack shirt during the grunge era, but I had always done that anyway, and i never had long hair or wore those big baggy shorts like Chris Cornell used to.

simonperrins | 7 January 2008 - 1:56pm

How many Hail Mary's for...

I don't have anything solo by John Lennon or anything at all by David Bowie. It's just happened that way.

Simon Hoyle | 7 January 2008 - 1:58pm

Never...

Owned an ipod either (though still thinking about it) or listened to a podcast. Never shouted out for a song at a gig (even though really wanted to). Goes back to never answering questions in class I think. Never been to a festival.

Janice | 7 January 2008 - 2:50pm

I have never been to the Glastonbury Festival

In my defence, I grew up reasonably close to the site and I refused to pay the entry fee just to end up a few miles up the road in ... Pilton.

iamnotthebeatles | 7 January 2008 - 3:21pm

Leather

I have never owned or worn a leather jacket, and I'm saving the leather trousers for when I'm in my fifties.

Andy Lynes | 7 January 2008 - 3:43pm

I have never...

... been to Glastonbury - no thanks: too much mud; too many w**kers.

... bought a Beatles album.

... dabbled with facial hair (mine or anyone else's).

... smoked dope - honestly: it just doesn't interest me.

David Ellcock | 7 January 2008 - 4:31pm

Me too...until last year!

I have never owned a Beatles album - until someone gave me some MP3s last year.

I had never dabbled with facial hair - until I fancied a try last year (and still have something going on today.)

I had never smoked dope - until last year (and I'm 49 years old, for God's sake).

Never have been to Glastonbury or any other overnighter. And don't think I ever will now.

Stephen Hanley | 7 January 2008 - 5:56pm

Something Old - Something New

New

I've never used iTunes for music (or owned an iPod).

Old

I missed out on the whole Live Aid experience. I was on holiday at the time, and couldn't understand why the usually heaving miles of Bournemouth beach were so totally deserted on such a gorgeous day. It was like the end of the world.

Being long before mobile phone technology, there was no way of any music mad mates getting in touch with 'did you just see?' questions as a reminder.
By the time I finally realised the empty acres were due to Live Aid and not a nuclear war, I had no way of watching the event, the B & B I'd booked into operated a stiff ' boot 'em out from 10 - 5' policy while the beds were turned and rooms aired. None of the local Pubs or Wine Bars had TVs, and portable cassette radios were the size of toolboxes which needed to be fed replacement batteries every hour.

Instead I had to try and relive the experience two weeks later through hastily videotaped highlights - videoed by parents trying to run a newsagents, check the shaky show schedules and work out the new video recorder all at the same time, the result being legendary artists and unique events getting the chop half way through their set, and manky acts getting all the tape space as fluid running times, dodgy VCR programming and an unfortunate style of improvisational panic editing ended up in video diary meltdown. To this day I still haven't seen 80% of Live Aid.

Dave C | 7 January 2008 - 5:07pm

Same here

I was leaving for a school-organised camping trip in the Lake District, driving up on Satuday 13th July 1985, so our only means of experiencing the concert was via the minibus radio and its quality medium wave reception. The rest of the family was leaving on holiday as well so there was no means of videoing all of it for later consumption. So my brother and I looked at the running order and set the video for what we thought would be any good - we managed to tape all of Queen's set and, either side of it, somehow also got the "Dancing In The Street" video and Bob Geldof's "F*ck the address" - so we probably saw the most talked about bits anyway. About a year later, someone lent us their videos of it but I have a feeling there were chunks of it missing.

Simon Hoyle | 7 January 2008 - 9:23pm

Neither

of you missed much.

Oeufman | 7 January 2008 - 9:33pm

Never . . .

. . . been to Glastonbury and never will although I was at Knebworth in 76 for the Stones and 79 for Zeppelin
. . . understood the point of "Trout Mask Replica", "Bitches Brew", "The White album"
. . . been to a "rave" and highly unlikely to do so
. . . knowingly bought anything by any boy band (although that Williams chap is on one track of "1 Giant Leap")

borntorun | 7 January 2008 - 7:21pm

OMG

I forgot the ghastly unlistenableness of Bitches Brew.......
And as for Bee-Fart (surely the origin of his title)

(Come on, you guys, defend all these icons! Whats the point of rubbishing all these fellas, often unable or unwilling to defend themselves, when all youse plucky outlaws of the received wisdom are out there, buying the same tripe as I have over the years. Emerors new wotsits or what?!)

Retropath2 | 8 January 2008 - 9:52am

Astral Weeks

I have never managed to get my head around that album... but I will persevere. I can't understand why I don't love it, as I really like Van Morrison's music! I return to it every so often and listen to it with fresh ears... maybe the next time...

Patrick Crowther | 7 January 2008 - 7:42pm

I'm going the other way

I loved Astral Weeks when I first heard it. But with repeated listenings, it's beginning to irritate me more than a little.

fatboyfat | 7 January 2008 - 9:46pm

Monumentally hopeless

Never done the overnight festival thing, either.

Never listened to "Pet Sounds", either, although I suspect I should.

Never listened to The Smiths whilst in the sixth form at school. Twenty years later, yes, but then, no.

And in answer to the "apologise to Strawberry Switchblade" regret, I've never apologised to Rochdale chanteuse Lisa Stansfield, after booing all the way through her set, supporting - would you believe - the 1990's incarnation of Genesis at Knebworth.

Everything else, though, I've done. Sorry.

fatboyfat | 7 January 2008 - 9:56pm

...walking cliche...

Hmmmm... thinking through it all I've actually managed most of the cliches. Mind you, I've never been to a stadium gig - if I want to watch a band on TV I'll buy the DVD and watch it a home where it's warm, comfy, the coffee and beer is free and there are marginally better toilets.

Never indulged in mind altering drugs... there's enough drugs on my repeat prescription at the docs to be going already thank you very much!

Trevor_Raggatt | 7 January 2008 - 10:38pm

Free beverages

Where do you get your free coffee and beer from Roger? We still have to pay for ours...!

David Ellcock | 7 January 2008 - 11:21pm

Lisa Stansfield followed by

Lisa Stansfield followed by Genesis '90. Jesus, I'd have been all booed out at the end of that one ;)

sweetleftfoot | 10 January 2008 - 8:19pm

My wife goes on the internet every week...

...and then a couple of days later the coffee and beer appears in the cupboard in the kitchen. Magic. Must find out how that works some time.

Trevor_Raggatt | 8 January 2008 - 9:24am

Well...

......when you've found out be sure to let us know!

David Ellcock | 8 January 2008 - 10:17am

never been to a stadium gig

never wanted to....

Jim Thomas | 8 January 2008 - 11:20am

Never heard ...

a single song by Captain Beefheart, Frank Zappa, The Grateful Dead.

Also, like many here, I've never heard Pet Sounds, and never slept at a festival.

Johan | 8 January 2008 - 3:17pm

Never "got" the Beatles -

Never "got" the Beatles - see separate blog....

Never been to a festival in the rain (the sun has always shone!)

Never heard a note, or plan to, by The Flaming Lips

John Waite | 8 January 2008 - 4:47pm

Aren't any of you the least bit curious

I'm sure we all have our own taste but a lot of you above seem very definite in your taste, maybe we should loosen up a bit and live little go on buy a beatles record, go to a festival. how does it go you try anything once except, incest, morris dancing and the red hot chilli peppers... ;)

Chris G | 9 January 2008 - 12:33pm

Got to agree..

.. to quote just one thread "...Never heard a note, or plan to, by The Flaming Lips"

Why? At least give them a try, even if it's just a 30 second sample from itunes then if you don't like them fair enough, but to dismiss them without even hearing "a note" seems a tad strange.

Spoodledude | 9 January 2008 - 12:42pm

The Beatles

I said I'd never "bought a Beatles album."

That's quite different from "I've never HEARD a Beatles album"...

David Ellcock | 9 January 2008 - 10:11pm

cherry popping

I had lived quite happily never having heard "umbrella" till just now...and they didnt even buy me dinner first.

Riccardo Gargiulo | 9 January 2008 - 10:57pm

Does this count as writing to the music press?

Because like someone above, I've never done that.

Through Smash Hits, NME, Q (even Select/Vox/MM/RM and some dodgy fanzines in the late 80's when I was going through my 'winsome' phase) and graduation to the Word, I've never had the courage.

Mind you I've liked some dodgy music so maybe it's not a bad thing?!

sweetleftfoot | 10 January 2008 - 8:17pm

Never

...have I held a lighter aloft in the name of music, but I did when I saw Harry Hill a couple of years ago (it was part of the show I recall, and I was seemingly the only person in the theatre who had a lighter to hand).

space_machine | 18 January 2008 - 7:42pm

Pet Sounds

I've never heard it either. Is it any good? Never camped out overnight - I don't like sleeping in mud and piss!

I used to live near (3 miles over the fields) from Hylands Park where they hold the V festival and I could never see the point of paying to go somewhere I go to for free the rest of the year.

Why do all the festivals I've been to where they have more than one stage insist on putting the acts I wanted to see on at the same time? Less is the new more.
