Are Steely Dan still worth seeing live?
Posted by UtrechtSimon on 26 April 2009 - 12:21pm.
Steely Dan are playing in Amsterdam towards the end of June but it costs 59 euros plus ticketing fees which will probably take the price closer to 70. I've always liked Steely Dan but have never seen them live.
I'd love to go but the ticket price is putting me off as I have never paid so much to see a concert before. I usually go to smaller gigs and rarely pay more than 20-25 euros to see a band. However, the Heineken Music Hall is small enough to be bearable (I'd guess about 5000 capacity having seen Morrissey there) but the key question is whether Becker and Fagen can still cut it live. Quality of vocals are obviously important in this assessment.
So, anyone seen them in the last few years and care to advise?

Saw them last year
in Birmingham. The band is great but I just wish they would cut loose a bit. Their first 5 albums were always my favourites and strangely their most successful Aja is my least favourite. From what I recall Green Earrings and Hey Nineteen were the standouts but yes the show was very good and reasonable value for money. Fagen still sings well but Becker stole the show which was something of a surprise.

They need to return to the twin-drummer
line-up though...
Saw them in Dusseldorf
a few years ago. Well, the main men are very much the main men, the band -quite big, maybe a nine piece- are competent but minions, so yeah, not much chance of anybody cutting loose any time soon. But the material is good and who says you'll get another chance so go for it.
I vote yay
Go for it. It's Steely Dan! Saw them in 1995 and 2007, I think. Worth it both times, preferred the 2007 show. Might give this year's shows a miss though, what with the baby and work and everything...
not seen them yet
I'll be seeing them in Birmingham. Recordings of all the recent tours have been excellent - great musicians, great arrangements, dry humour, what's not to love ?
Hammersmith 2007
They were pretty damn good. Musicianship of the highest order, a bit light on stage charisma. Lots from Aja (very jazzy with 4 piece brass section - good), nothing from Pretzel Logic (shame). The whole place stood and sang every word to the encore of My Old School
as a dan fan
I was bored at a show last year. May as well have sat there with my ipod.
Got no problem with clinical
Got no problem with exactitude
Just wanted some sort sense
That this was a live experience
I agree...
..I saw the same tour as Tony..was strangely unmoved.
Preferred World Party, to be frank.
I might help I guess, if I knew what at least one of their songs was about.
