anything but " alright now"

DAD rock no thanks?

On tv recently there have been several ads for CDs aimed as presents for Fathers day. If you look at the track listings they all seem to be exclusively old tracks, some creep into this century but you would have thought that being a Dad suddenly means you've no interest in anything new. The cd's are the aural equivalent of chocolate golf tees and humorous ties with pints of beer on them. Also the tracks are so conservative and obvious.

So here's the challenge can we come up with our own track listing for a cd, you would like to receive as a present on Father's or Mother's day. Rules: one track only and it has to be new to you (I know, I know there is not really anything such thing as "new" music anymore but you get the drift)
so one great new track oh and no Steppenwolf.

Sorry my sugestion would be Great DJ by The Ting Tings which has sunk into my brain it sounds like the Mondays in parts and very catchy.

here's a usual suspect

Blue Plastic Bags

by Malcolm Middleton, erstwhile Arab Strapper and all round scottish miserablist good egg, from his Sleight of Heart LP. A homely if Hogarthian portrait of noughties Britain, just cheerful enough to gladden the heart of any father, as he scans the future world as a place fit for his offspring.....

This morning...

...I picked up a copy of Nigeria Special: Modern Highlife, Afro-Sounds & Nigerian Blues 1970-6 which I am playing and enjoying right now. It's too early to pick a favourite, so I'll go with track 1, disc 1: Ayamma by Anambra Beats.

Paper Planes

...the Homeland Security Remix, by M.I.A. The illustrious Mr.Hepworth recommended this a while back, and it's a corker. It samples an old Clash track, it uses gun mechanism noises as a percussive device, and MIA herself has the "Dad Factor" much-used by the Beeb in its selection of Doctor Who assistants (though I don't think that was a criterion for selecting Catherine Tate). I make that three "Dad" boxes ticked, without the faintest whiff of Old Hat.

Catherine Tate....

Certainly appeals to some, cough, Dad's here...

Standing in for Joe by XTC - Niiice.....

Catherine Tate

Certainly nothing wrong with CT from this corner either...

Ahem.

I got a shock a couple of years ago: there was an advert, voiced by Phil Daniels for a CD called Suited And Booted

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Suited-Booted-Essential-Mod-Ska/dp/B0009NR8EE/re...

I was watching TV with my wife, who is a little bit younger than me. Aha, I said, it's my music!! Madness, The Specials, we are the mods, we are the mods we are we are....Then I heard the really scary phrase: the perfect gift for father's day....Ouch. Oh how my wife laughed. I didn't.

Funnily enough...

...that's exactly what the kids bought me that year.

And as such compilations go, it's actually pretty fine.

Coronation Street

It's great in terms of content. But I never thought of The Specials as 'dad' music! And around the same time last year, the soaps were all playing The Jam for some reason: well Phil Daniels in Eastenders was obvious, but they were using it in Coronation Street too...that made me feel really old...

It Could Have Been Worse

Matthew Ryan - discovered very recently through this very web site
An evocative mix of memories, regrets and celebration - seems appropriate for Fathers Day!

Never Any Good With Money

A touching and honest potrayal of his Dad.

Starlings by Elbow

Best song I have heard this year by a country mile.

Whilst on subject of Coronation Street, in a recent episode Ken Barlow mentioned that he had just finished reading Elmore Leonards Up in Honeys' room.
And I thought I was hip.

I have to admit...

I love that Gabriella Cilmi single 'Sweet About Me'.

That's pretty damn current, I'd say.

spikeyboy | 3 June 2008 - 8:11pm

I nominate

Jessica by Polar Bear - a young spoken word chap, not the jazz outfit.

It's a lovely spoken piece that I heard on Colin Murray's Black Hole spot in February...

The great Fathers Day record is....

...."My Country" by Randy Newman. You can hear it here. It's the antithesis of all those idealised depictions of fatherhood in which everybody bonds over family meals or long walks down the beach. This is about the great truth that families spend most of their lives watching television and making comments about it. "Feelings might go unexpressed, think that's probably for the best."

God, how good is Randy Newman?

David Hepworth | 4 June 2008 - 3:39pm

Yup

Randy nails American "family" life yet again. He is sickeningly spot on everytime.

"Teenage Wish" from Ross McLennan's "Sympathy For The New World" album.
