Anyone have an artist that they are otherwise so-so about but who have one single wonderful song you love?

BernkastelCues's picture

(I know this has been done before, but what is the company of other old men if it's not forum for continually raking up the past?)

Mines is "Dragonfly on Main Street" by Ron Sexsmith. Heard it and thought it was brilliant. bought about 3 of his albums and was hugely dissapointed..

Go on then....

I purchased

The "Hockey" album on the strength of "too fake".

The album is as bad as the single was good.

Odd you say that

I thought 3am Spanish by Hockey was a fantastic song and everything else they did was terrible. Not heard Too Fake though; Hockey seem to have disappeared off the face of the planet as far as I can tell.

Too fake

was the first single from the album iirc.

I was also fooled by "Hard to beat" from Hard-Fi.

I bought it on the strength of 'Song Away'

which I still love, but apart from 1 or if I'm in a good mood, 2 other songs it's a pile of poo.

I agree with this.

They're great live, though

'Dragonfly..'

is one of my least favourite Sexsmith songs. Go figure, etc.

a couple I can think of

Patience by Take That is a wonderful song.

All their other stuff is bobbins

Sweet Jane - Lou Reed. So long as its the Rock and Roll Animal version. What is all the fuss about Lou Reed? Come to think of it...it may be Steve Hunter's guitar. Anyway... it's the D's Bs.

I have to take exception...

Back for good is a great song and their new album is excellent imo.

( seriously )

Ah, Lou Reed Rock and Roll Animal

I loved Steve Hunters Intro too.. think it's actually a seperate track before "Sweet Jane"? (Called.. "Intro"...?). One of my teenage tennisracketguitarpegforatremeloebigposeinthemirror favourites.

Loved it too, but slightly differently to my original point, I loved all Lou Reeds stuff when he was a bit metal. The "Lou Reed Live" album as well. Stuff that the officionados tend to be sniffy about.

Not to taken with his other stuff.

The answer as always is Richard Thompson

1952 Vincent Black Lightning = Utter genius.
Remaining body of work = Pants.

0
clivetemple | 12 January 2011 - 6:29pm

It's the opposite for me.

Not a fan of 1952 VBL, love just about everything else by the be-bereted maestro.

Clive,

you took the words right out of my mouth. I love that song.

i love this

but the rest wafts by

0

this is pretty damn good too

John Hiatt

"Crossing Muddy Waters" (the track, not the album) I think is exceptional, the rest of his work is ok but doesn't grab me in the same way.

Neil Dyson | 12 January 2011 - 7:07pm

eh??

Hehehe...he's one of my favourites.

Do "Perfectly Good Guitar"(the song) and "Tennessee Plates" not grab you. These are just the first 2 to come to mind...I could rime off a dozen.

I love both of his latest albums...Open Road and Same Old Man. Maybe they grab me because I'm just a wee bit younger than him and can relate to what he's saying.

I would say...

"Faith". I just find that song so catchy.

Mundy: "July"

Anyone heard this song? I was absolutely transfixed by it when I first heard it, and it remains one of my favourites.

But never really heard anything else the guy has done that does much for me.

0
Stephen Merrick | 12 January 2011 - 8:02pm

did you ever hear 'mexico'?

I think it came out before July (but I could be wrong). I think it's got a great feelgood vibe off it, although high art it certainly ain't!

I love The Wurzels version of 'Ruby'.

No really. I do.

Anyone else think...

"For Lovers" with Wolfman is the only worthwhile song Pete Doherty has ever done?

The French are welcome to him.

0
graceunderpressure | 12 January 2011 - 10:58pm

um no...

I'm going to stick up for Mr Doherty (someone has to). I have no time for the whole 'heroin chic' thing, and he has produced his fair share of dross, but he's also crafted some damn fine pop songs in his time.

case in point...

0
stardust2 | 13 January 2011 - 6:02am

I'm with you

He's done some great stuff.
