Anyone ever gone into Fopp for a "quick browse" and did just that ....
Posted by Sebastian Beach on 2 August 2010 - 10:47pm.
Maybe one day I will manage it.
I'm on one of my occasional trips to that London and really, really meant to just have a a quick look around the store before meeting an old mate for a beer.
Now back at my hotel looking at all of the loot and wondering how I will sneak it onto the shelves without Mrs Beach noticing.

The opposite effect
Often when I go into Fopp I gather a mountain of CD's then, head spinning and unable to make a final selection, dump the whole lot and make a hasty exit.
Mostly other stuff
I did purchase ealy albums by The National and A Hawk and a Hacksaw but most of my purchases were books and DVDS.
e.g. Willy Vlautin's novel "Northline" recommended here and only £2, less than the price of a coffee in London and one more work that joins my ever growing pile of stuff to read.
My to read pile is now slipping away from me. Probably now have 40-50 books in a heap next to my desk, representing at least 18 months worth. I appreciate this has been covered partly by David Hepworth's recent thread but when do other members of the Massive know when to stop?.
After buying seven books yesterday,..
...none of which was the one I was after, no.
I have a Not Read Yet shelf. It is always absurdly full. Running mad in Borders on its last day really did not help. At least twenty...
FOPP
Whenever I visit the UK, a visit to FOPP is a must...and yes, I always spend WAY too much cash there...
Married to the CD
For an example of this kind of hoarding behaviour taken to extremes, you need look no further than my present sleeping arrangements: The section of the mattress closest to the wall is lined with small cardboard boxes containing my most recent CD purchases, with the box containing my newest acquisitions nearest to the pillow. Last night, instead of stretching out next to a warm-blooded partner, I nuzzled up to a copy of the new Arcade Fire album.
Not surprisingly I remain single, however my inner wife is absolutely furious with me.
Aah...
...that'll be a compulsive music fan's version of the Scholar's Mistress, then ; )
however my inner wife is absolutely furious with me
That's a Great line,B7. I would imagine your online dating profile is a must read.
I was in a couple of weeks ago....
....first time for years.
13 CDs (oldies) for £49!! I could easily have bought another 13 and probably will next time.
My Local Fopp (Leamington Spa) closed
and re-opened in a very similar form as 'Head Records'.
Very difficult to walk in and not buy something. Still have a the same sort of pricing policy, so a lot of the musical biogs/band histories are low-priced (Bought Ronnie Wood's book for £3). This applies to quite a lot of books by well-known authors(e.g. Banks, Fry, Neifegger,Brown, Mark Haddon etc.) and humorous stuff. I bought all of my Brookmyre stuff from from Fopp/Head or about £3.00 per book.
Also a lot of low-priced back catalogue stuff and DVDs.
Very tempting on most occasions, have bought less there this year, but more books from other sources.
I think the last CD I bought was a live Richard & Linda Thompson album for about £4/5. A bit jaded on the music front - it's my age, you know.
Having said all that, bought 'In Bruges' DVD for £3.00 in HMV - a steal!
We don't have the option in Sheffield...
...but on the plus side we do have Record Collector still.
Can't quite binge there Fopp-stylee.
But I try my best.
Record Collector
Lived in Sheffield for much of the 90's and spent many a happy Saturday morning in Broomhill at this fantastic shop. Haven't been in for quite a while since the parking became so difficult across the road.
Is Nibbles still open on the corner? - used to drop the son and heir off at footie practice at Weston Park. One of their bacon and egg baps, mug of tea, lengthy browse at Record Collector with a dip into Oxfam or Blackwells made for a grand start to the day.
Has Sheffield Fopp closed then?
Never liked Record Collector. A bit scuzzy, and too much vinyl knocking about.
I appreciate words like that are tantamount to heresy in Word circles, but I speak as I find... ; )
Boo - burn the witch!
Ahem. (They've got the vinyl in a separate shop to avoid damaging your sensibilities, but it definitely still has, shall we say, a certain ramshackle charm.)
Sheffield Fopp is long gone and occasional rumours of a return in one of the vacant shops along Division St have proved false.
Not just Fopp, everything else you might remember, apart from Record Collector, HMV and Rare and Racy's little collection of odd CDs and second hand vinyl, has disappeared from the city.
Nibbles is still there though - they've been digging a bloody great hole in the road in front of it for the last 2/3 weeks though which might have affected its attractiveness. (And yes, before anyone asks, The Hole in the Road is long gone too.)
I'm off to Cambridge this coming Sunday.....
....so will head for Fopp. Have a scoot around the cheap dvd's, cd's, books and vinyl. Will see what I can knab.
No Fopp in Chester.
But my intention is to visit "In the Land of Grey and Pink" (Local second hand disc emporium)on Thursday for an ill advised splurge.
I managed to give up drug taking in the 1990's but shifting my music/book/dvd addiction is one monkey on my back I just can't dislodge.
Oh dear
I sense a September pilgrimage coming on.
ooh...
is Grey and Pink still there? Superb to know. Haven't been in Chester for years and years, but great to be aware that's still an option if I am.
D x
Yip
Still here, still holding on in there.
Grey n Pink Records
yep Grey n Pink Records still there and doing well ...
Jayhawks
Picked up the "Best of" for a fiver which included, 2nd CD with rareties etc (good ones too, for once) and DVD of all their vids. Fan-blimmin-tastic!!
I've managed it...
... although I did pop back in the following day and come away with a Laura Veirs CD, 'Real Life' by Magazine, and Olivier's 'Richard III' on DVD. Well, I tried...
good for bargains
i walked into the one on Shaftesbury Avenue recently for a browse and walked put 15 mins later with 30 quids worth of classic French movies. So its good for broadening your education - at little cost to the pocket.
It's all I ever do now
I still like a browse, but I rarely buy anything. The one in Shaftsbury Avenue is so small there's never anything in there that I don't already have.
I'm due to go to Manchester
I'm due to go to Manchester in October avec famille and am currently trying to figure out how I can shake them off for 30 mins to go to Fopp.
Last time I was in a Fopp was 2008 in Shaftesbury Avenue, I was on a business trip to London and spent the time between every single meeting in there. No matter how hard I tried I could only spend £95 and came out with 22 albums, including a Richard Hawley album 'Late Night Final' that I didn't have.
With regards to a book shelf for books not read, mine currently has 38 on it - not helped by the fact that I bought 5 more at the weekend.
I keep telling myself that it's time to stop, but I can't help myself!
