Anyone ever been (or going) to the Womad festival?

Martin Simmonds's picture

Never been, always fancied it.

I've taken the plunge and bought tickets. Really looking forward to it.

I'm expecting something a little different from the normal festival experience. Am I right to do so?

My sister-in-laws house

is at the bottom end of the field.

If we go this year we'll wave.

I went to the original Shepton Mallet WOMAD in 1980 (?)

and it was incredible, if a little disorganised even by the standards of the time.

Can't recommend it enough

Used to go regularly when it was here in Reading, it was always a brilliant day or two.
Very friendly, great selection of weird and wonderful food and market stalls, and never failed to surprise me with at least one stunning band/performance I'd never heard of before.
Quite apart from the great performers who I was already familiar with of course.

Go with an open mind and be prepared to wander around all the stages, you can't lose!

Agreed.

I went every year for 6 or 7 years in a row when it was at Reading, and had a great time. Only managed the first year at Charlton Park, which was a disorganised mud-bath, but friends of mine have been there the last few years and they had a great time.
There's always a great line-up, even if it might not look like it on paper. Lots of hidden gems on the smaller stages. Enjoy!

Bit slow off the mark here

Go regularly as me and the GLW often meet up with fellow ex-VSO volunteer types there. Always enjoy it. The best things are often away from the main stage. This year looks good:
