Anybody got time on their hands and want to make a woman happy?
I've just had an email from a reader who wants to give his wife a special present for her 50th birthday later this year.
We want 50 great albums, one from every year of her life. Obviously you don't know her so you'll probably err on the side of caution. Anybody choosing Gong's "Camembert Electrique" or Andrew Ridgeley's "Son Of Albert" is just being stupid. Can you pick one great album from every year since 1958?
It's not as hard as you think. Just go to this page on Wikipedia and pick your first album - I went for "Porgy and Bess" by Miles Davis - and then just change the date in the URL to go to the next year.
Last one to finish is not a gentleman.

Starts off quite straightforward
but gets harder and harder.
Can you wait until this evening?
Some of us have work to do you know...
Sadly,
I am already in possession of a list from 1966-2007.
Oh yes
Well, let's see it then.

2007 - Hold Steady - Boys & Girls In America
1977 o dear......
.....haven't you read Heppos views about this (fine) album?
Not sure that I have.
But I take it it's less than complimentary? Anyway, he was singing the praises of Brothers In Arms on the podcast the other week, so, clearly, we're all prone to lapses in taste.
it's be fun in the restaurant
that plays the redskins Lp!
He wanted 50 great albums,
one for each year. And I'd say, of all the socialist, skinhead, blue-eyed soul albums of that year, the Redskins is the greatest.
Any list with
Shack HMS Fable, Ryan Adams Gold & Teenage Fanclub Grand Prix looks alright to me.
Right...
1958 - High School Confidential - Jerry Lee Lewis
1959 - The Genius of Ray Charles
1960 - Have Guitar Will Travel - Bo Diddley
1961 - King of the Delta Blues Singers - Robert Johnson

1968 - Beggars Banquet - The Stones
1969 - Let It Bleed - The Stones
1970 - Funhouse - The Stooges
1971 - A Nod Is As Good As A Wink - The Faces
1972 - Exile on Main Street
I could be wrong...
and of course I don't know the gentleman in question's partner, so I apologise for any offence caused, but this sounds like someone who buys his wife a nice Black & Decker drill for Christmas: not because she wants one, but because he does.
Red Herring?
If it's as easy as you say, David ("Just go to this page on Wikipedia and pick your first album and then just change the date in the URL to go to the next year."), and given that the gentleman in question knows his GLW's musical foibles far better than we do, isn't he better off doing it himself...? I mean how do I know whether she'd prefer Big Black or The Style Council, to pick two names from my iPod at random?
Or is the whole "lady's birthday" construct a red herring?
No
It is not. But it would be an invasion of their privacy to name them.
OK
Fair enough. Still not sure that Mrs Anonymous will be all that enamoured with my nominating every New Order album in the relevant year... I know Mrs Ellcock wouldn't be!
that would be a blue monday!
sounds good to me.
Ah, you misunderstand...
...the object is to compile a present for *her*.
No, no
I understand David; I just don't know what the lady likes. How can I choose between, let's say, Unknown Pleasures and The Wall for 1979 without knowing her tastes?
Imagine you're running a record shop
A customer comes up and says "I want one record from that year. Over here I've got this multi platinum huge hit with that big worldwide hit with the kids chorus. Over here I've got this record that I don't know any of the tunes from. Which one should I buy?"
JD obviously
Who would want a record with kids in the chorus? I see what you tried there with your trickery.
Neither madam
I'd buy Regatta de Blanc by the Police...
But here's another idea
Why doesn't he buy her the album that was no. 1 on her birthday each year from 1958? I seem to recall a thread from a couple of months ago linking to a fantastic website that provided just that sort of info. Maybe someone else can provide a link to it?
EDIT: actually this is as good a place to start as any, assuming he's in the UK.
the other solution
and it may just fit on 2 cd's is the number one from her birthday each year, it makes for more talking points than getting copies of revolver and and led zep 4.
Ella
i got from 1958 - 1980, with ella fitzgerald albums, for a start, and maybe one could find a whole heap of faux ella from then until today
i think the lady, any lady, would lurve that..!
I don't think this helps
I may have got carried away.
I moved away from wiki and i do like Ella.

Now that's what I call a good, if very male, list
Nice combination of copper bottomed certainties and left field choices. She might not like it all but she won't come round and destroy your lawn.
It doesn't solve the problem
but I typed "what music do women like" into google the first entry was this
http://www.amazon.com/Lesbian-Favorites-Women-Like-Us/dp/B000003451
I don't think it helps but would anyone whatever their gender or sexuality buy such a targeted cd?
What?
No 'It's Raining Men'?
Two lists,
two votes for Pacific Ocean Blue. He must have been doing something right.
I fear...
the sudden popularity of that record may have come too late for wor Dennis.
2000 to 2008

Finisterre - Saint Etienne

The Seldom Seen Kid - Elbow
On the contrary
Consolidated's Play More Music contains the Yeastie Girl assisted gem You Suck which more than makes up for the unrestrained masculinity having a kickabout up the reccy in the rest of the list.
Failing that, I've the last eight still to compile.
This has taken me bloody ages...

Sorry, The Magic Numbers, but great as your album is, it has to make way for Kate Bush's 'Aerial', a record I was obsessed with when it came out. How could I have forgotten about it?

It is record...
that never fails to make one feel better.
1987
Leapt out at me - Famous Blue Raincoat by Jennifer Warnes. Still a favourite, I still play it...when it came out, HMV on Oxford St had it as a guaranteed purchase, money back no questions asked if you bought it and didn't like it.
Right, I'm home now
And although my taste is of course impeccable (hem hem), I have tried to tailor as best I can to my (imagined) audience's likely tastes. So wilful obscurantism is out and the "testosterone-fuelled" is steered clear of (to a certain extent).
Only other discipline I have set myself is no more than one album per artist.

Phew! That got a bit difficult!
Overall, not often the 'best' album of the year each year, but I think a pretty varied and balanced selection?
And plenty for the laydeez in there!
I'm not ungrateful..
...really I'm not. But OASIS!!
I hear you.
It was either that or Different Class.
But in the spirit of diversity (and in recognition of an album that is, of it's type, one of the best) I went with the Gallaghers.
Now if I'd included Be Here Now you'd have had a point!
Bearing in mind
the age and gender, and based on some brief market research, I would suggest simply buying 50 copies of Elton John's Greatest Hits - in my experience they never want to listen to anything they haven't already heard. But if you must then ...

These are my favourites from my collection...no wiki lookup used. I don't have much at the beginning as these are the only records I have of the late 50's/early 60's. I've made up for it though as I couldn't pick a winner from years '72, '78 or '98....apologies if I cheated.
I'm fifty very shortly too. I'm more likely to get the aforementioned Black and Decker drill than 50 cds *groan*. My wife will be 50 in a couple of years. I think she'd rather have the drill than the cds!
50 years of compilations
Like everyone else, I am not convinced that the lady in question would be enthralled by my selection of 'classc' albums. Looking through my iTunes library I realised that a fair number of tracks come, not from the original album, but from compilation albums. So, I thought that she would prefer albums full of hits, rather than padding. This means that I have been able to include the bestselling albums in the US and UK in the list (Eagles and Queen) and the list is more 'pop' that it would otherwise have been.
I have also included live albums (which gives some 'classic' albums) but which also are full of hit tracks meeting my original criteria. You will notice that there are a couple of years still empty but I'm beginning to lose the will to live.
There is a special treat for blog readers near the end. The list could be improved. I am sure that more recent years should include good hip-hop and dance compilations but I wouldn't know what they are. I have tried to give a varied selection of musical genres. There are some glaring ommissions, e.g. I could decide whether to go with the Beatles Red or Blue compilations in 1973, so I chose neither, and went for Simon and Garfunkel instead.

Given that this is meant to lead to a birthday present I have tried to choose compilations which are still available in some form or other. But I did have to include the first 'Now ..." given how long that series has lasted and how many people have bought their favourite tracks that way.
"Last one to finish is not a gentleman."
Quite; I'll wager that not many no-tails will bother with such a High Fidelity pursuit – although I'm not proposing a gender bar, just surmising it. Anyone out there without a Y chromosome tempted to indulge? Lord knows I am; Hepworth, you're applying electrodes to our OCD hypothalamus...
I would...
...but I am a bit knackered at the mo. Maybe tomorrow...
On another tack, I quite like Elton John, but would rather have Madman Across The Water than Greatest Hits.
