Anybody else getting fed up with Google Chrome?

Thomas the Rhymer's picture

This web browser is now virtually unusable on a site with lots of embedded video like The Word. All I get now where I should see video clips is a really annoying sad face and a message to say that "The following plugin has crashed: Shockwave Flash". A bit of, er, Googling shows that this is a known problem introduced with version 10 of Chrome. There doesn't seem to be any progress in fixing it and it is not possible to install the previous (ie working) release.

It's a shame. I really liked Chrome as a browser. But it looks like I'm off back to Firefox or IE until Google get around to sorting it out. Surely, though, such a major fault would have been apparent in even the most cursory testing before release?

I get the same

I was blaming my old & creaking laptop, so it's good to hear it's not that. I used Firefox for years, so I'll go back to that.

Works OK for me

Am I doing something right or wrong?

I never understand these discussions

There are five major browsers in circulation, all of which are free. In addition, there's about 20 more obscure ones you could use.

If you don't like your browser, use another one.

(I don't have problems with Chrome either.)

Be careful though

I hardly ever use IE but I thought I'd update to IE9 anyway now that it's been given a full release. Disaster! My Roxio video capture application has been broken and rolling back to the middle of last week hasn't fixed it. Therefore if you don't need another browser don't install one. It's the worsttime of year for it to happen as well, the Sky box is nearly full because they insist on putting the big US series on during the football season when there's no time to watch them and I have no way of getting them off the box onto DVD! I may need to do a full restore to the factory settings just to get stuff off the Sky Box

You can revert to IE8

at least in Windows 7. There's an option when you go to Remove Programs (in the top-left of the window I think). I can't be more specific without checking my home machine, as I don't use Windows 7 at work. Do a Google search.

Also, did you try compatability mode?

Okay, on Win 7

1. Type 'remove' into the search box to bring up Add or Remove Programs
2. Select View Installed Updates
3. Uninstall IE9

Too late

Thanks but I thought I was going one better than that by going back to a restore point before it was installed. I'm back with IE8 now but the important things still aren't working now I have to decide between, reinstalling IE9 so that I can uninstall it or just reinstalling my Roxio stuff both of which are a bit of a pain. I've had this PC for nearly 3 years now and never reformatted, that's the first time I've ever gone that long so perhaps it's time to start afresh anyway.

Can't you just

Undo the system restore? Haven't tried it on Windows 7 but used to do it all the time with XP

I could

I could, but as it doesn't seem to have properly restored it to last week's setup I'm a bit nervous about breaking something else. As I said, I was thinking of starting again anyway to get it back up to speed so I may just wipe everything away at the weekend..... or next weekend.... or the one after that. There are plenty of options - the point really was that IE seems to have broken it so beware.

That's

works for me.

have you tried reinstalling Flash?

how old is your computer, Thomas?

if you're running any browser on a laptop that was a decent spec five years ago, the memory shipped with it will have difficulty handling youtube-heavy pages. The bug in Chrome 10 can't help matters either...

Word magazine works

Word magazine works perfectly on both browsers - even the new firefox 4.

One thing I cannot get to work on Firefox is to play Soundcloud tracks - I click on the play button and nothing happens.

Works fine on chrome.

Any thoughts ???

I'm sure

Soundcloud uses *.flv (flash format) files for the files with the option to download mp3s for some of the tracks. Might be your Adobe Flash player wants updating, though Firefox usually tells you if that's the case. Although I'm still on Firefox 3.6.16.

Firefox 4

only arrived on Tuesday, though I've been using the betas for a while. For a long period, Flash seemed to be very flaky, but for around a month (around when beta 9 showed up), it's been fairly solid on both my work and home OSX 10.6.x

Indeed, I'm using it now. Certainly seems quicker than 3.6, though I did have lots of add-ons installed (most of which still work).

In my case..

there are no problems with Chrome. I don't even want to know about the latest version as my present one is completely fuss-free.

I'm not a nerd, only a user.

0
Declan | 24 March 2011 - 1:43pm

You've almost certainly got the latest version

Chrome updates itself automatically and invisibly.

I'm struggling with the Flash issue myself, and am seriously thinking about reverting to Firefox. Unfortunately I have Chrome set up the way I like it, with bookmarks, add-ins, tabs etc, and I really don't want to re-start from scratch.

So I persevere each day in the hope that, eventually, an updated Chrome will magically appear and put these issues behind it.

Depends on which laptop I use

I have a Dell laptop with XP and it is fine on there but I'm getting the problem on my Toshiba running Vista.

Also on the Toshiba, Chrome wont put the Word blog into the 'most visited' list no matter how many times I go there but at the same time keeps sites on there that I last visited about a fortnight ago.

Have noticed

that it now takes an epoch to open (well, *tens* of seconds at least), on my ageing PC. On my newer but very basic laptop it's fine though. Could it be a cache issue because I use it on the PC far more?

Seems OK to me

I've got the latest Chrome on a Vista machine and it seems to handle embedded video fine.

Mind you, I don't really use it because my default is Firefox. Still debating whether to take the plunge and get 4. I upgraded to IE9 last week and really wasn't impressed, though for some reason it felt like it improved gradually after the install. Still slower than FF though.

I also have Safari installed. Does having four different browsers installed show a lack of committment?

Skuds | 24 March 2011 - 9:56pm

I recently started using Chrome...

...because IE is getting slower and slower. However I have discovered I'm still using IE7 on this Vista machine. Should I upgrade?
