What is Jo Whiley up to now? Any chance of a reunion?
Their mid 90s evening show was the last programme I really listened to on Radio 1 before leaving music radio behind completely and moving on to 5 Live and rediscovering my old CDs (pre-Spotify).
A reunion on the newly rejuvenated Radio 2 would be marvellous. How about a Sunday afternoon indie requst show 2-5pm?
I have
The end of last few decades saw albums released that shaped much of the following few years (The Man Who by Travis in 1999; The Stone Roses in 1989; too many to mention* in 1979). What album/act does he think may influence the sound of the new decade?
* a cop-out I know...
Does Steve have any sympathy with the concept of...
landfill indie?
Oh the usual pub chatter
What's your favourite band of all time?
Favourite album?
What band would you have wanted to be a member of?
First single you ever bought?
Yeah,
'Steve, what's it like living in the eaves of Adam & Joe's hut? '[which is just outside of the Big British Castle walls - of course - and was built by George Lamb]
'And were you badly injured by the Champagne cork which Adam fired at you on Boxing day?'
Going Deaf For A Living?
Any idea if his book "Going Deaf For A Living" is likely to be reprinted? I've been looking for a copy for ages, but it remains stubbornly out of print.
may i suggest...
amazon.co.uk? used copies are available there. on bookfinder.com you can even find signed copies...
the ones that say "to mum & dad.."
What was the last gig...
...of the hundreds you attend each year, to really startle you and make you feel you were witnessing something really new and fresh?
Steve discovered Coldplay.
What does he have to say for himself?
Is that in the same sense that
Sir Ronald Ross discovered malaria ?
Just a quick thanks
for introducing me to the marvellous Cable. Steve played "Freeze The Atlantic", and I was hooked. Since managed to pick up all the singles, EPs and LPs. Marvellous....and thanks!!
Is "Everybody Was In The French Resistance.....now"
the best band name you've heard recenty?
I saw you once in Glasgow Central Station
How much do you weigh?
Does he listen to *any* old?
And by *old* I mean anything over, oh, five years old. The never-ending quest for new music is admirable but I get the impression that as soon as he's discovered one band it's on to the next. Does any of it stay with him? His passion for music is unquestionable but at the same time, paradoxically it seems like he sees it as disposable - that's the impression I get from interviews anyway. What music does he actually cherish?
Not having a dig, I'm genuinely curious.
He plays Placebo
pretty much every night. He needs to let the 90s go.
Is he still listening to Tim Ten Yen?
Or alternatively, when was the last time he was in Colchester?
What does Steve think of
Zane Lowe's Radio One show? Any bitterness at being shunted out of the station's schedules?
It all comes down to David Bowie,
doesn't it?
Wasn't It Steve Who . . .
. . . was the hack present on the scene when Richie Manic carved 4 Real into his arm all those years ago? What on earth did he think at the time? Any idea how big a story/iconic an image it would become? Did he get a hanky out to try to stop the bleeding, etc?
Carter USM were better than Oasis - discuss...
Oasis single handedly destroyed 'indie' and replaced it with something supposedly bigger, brighter and better. I would argue that what came before (Suede, Auteurs, Carter, MBV..etc) was far more sophisticated than the lumpen knees up pub rock served up by the Gallaghers.
Leeds v Colchester on the 30th
You going? Fancy a beer before the game?
Can you get me George Lamb's autograph?
Or the name of the shop where he gets his bow ties?
new
Who is the best band you have seen that didn't make it and the worst band you've seen who did?
What did you think of the hammering Joe Whily got in The Word?
Colin Murray, the Evening Session till the Darts. What sport would you like to commentate on?
If mine doesn't make it,
go with Paintyface's
Steve...
As a gourmand peanut and cider consumer, what is your favorite combination of the two?
What pork scratchings do you rate, if any?
"Tim Machine" by Tin Machine
is the best David Bowie LP since "Let's Dance" in 1983. Discuss.
What is....
your favourite type of french rainproof garment?
Colchester United
Does Mr Lamacq still harbour the same feelings as expressed on Fighting Talk about Paul Lambert? Presumably he won't agree with my prediction of a narrow win for Norwich against Colchester this Saturday?
What's...
...your favourite Steely Dan song?
Steve has been to a lot of gigs.
A truly enormous amount, to be honest.
1) How many does he reckon he's clocked up over the years?
2) To what extent has his hearing been knackered by prolonged and frequent exposure to loud music?
3) Just in case.. TO WHAT EXTENT HAS HIS HEARING BEEN KNACKERED..etc
And now to matters both coatular and exitiferous..
Is that your
real name?
His first name is
Retour.
...and his middle name is
Novv
How does HE feel
about Tv celebrities filling the radio airwaves?
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/too-many-tv-presenters-radio-2
Looking forward to this so...
Given the gig miles Steve must have clocked up it seems a good point to re-open this tremendous thread
http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/whats-worst-stage-behaviour-youve-...
So, What is the worst on stage behaviour Steve has ever witnessed at a gig.
You *have* to get him to reveal his favourite crisps/pub snack as well imagine the sponsorship deal waiting to happen...
Ask Steve whether he pinched a recent feature,
on the 'least amount of people at a gig', for his radio show, from the Word Blog.
Then ask him what his all time favourite music publication is?
Time waits for no man
Yes - ask Steve how he manages to find the time to do all the things he does *and* see bands seven, sometimes eight, days a week. If I tried that my wife would have something to say about it I'm sure! I know it's sort of his job but jeesh, I certaintly couldn't manage seven gigs in a row fuelled only by crisps and cider.
Why
weren't Lush the biggest band in the universe?
erm didn't one of the band
have an untimely death?
Sadly yes
but before then, why weren't they the biggest band in the universe?
Really...?!
which one died? I still have some postcards sent to me from the lovely Miki and Emma dating way back, pre-Lush, when they used to do a fanzine together called "Alphabet Soup".
the drummer sadly took his own life
and the rest of band understandbly couldn't carry on I think is the case.
The drummer...
Chris Acland...I think he hanged himself. Pretty gruesome either way.
Oh, I see.
I didn't know that, that's the second piece of rock related sad news I've heard today, what with Mick Green too.
At least I've got the new podcast to look forward to, cheer myself up!
Does he find that myth of backstage glamour
just a load of bollocks?
Would Steve rather hang out backstage with the headliners or stay out front with a packet of crips and a pint of cider?
Which tip for the top...
...was his best and made him feel the most proud, and which his worst? (especially the latter-there may be many examples)
