Anthologies

Steve Turner's picture

There are some excellent musical anthologies around but there also far too many very poor compilations. Following a visit to FOPP this week and a purchase of a Sly and Robbie compilation disc it got me thinking. The music on the disc is excellent although the packaging and short playing time are pretty awful `(less than 35 minutes). It got me thinking that Sly and Robbie with their numerous colloborations and appearances with much of the rock/reggae cognoscenti would benefit from the anthology treatment. Another artist I would love to see anthologised is Steve Earle - the current compilations/best ofs are dreadful and he must have loads of unreleased and rare stuff.

Who would you most like to see on an anthology?

Sidetracks

....is a decent Steve Earle compilation of mostly covers. There are also at least a couple of bootlegs of his rarer material. "Magnetized Motherfuckers" Vol 1 is a 3 disc set.

A Choice Selection of

Strawbs is a really great comp, I had that on CD before I started replacing my vinyl

This would have

to be your proposed Sly & Robbie comp:http://open.spotify.com/track/5U85SCoVsOVzX3zXP7cjIk

Other artistes that are crying out for a thorough anthologising are Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and Thom Bell.

Hey Stevie

we are on the same wavelength when not talking about British Airways. Good tip on the Steve Earle Bootleg - I will look out for it.

Yes Steve, it's just a discussion.

We have different opinions but there's no need to fall out over it.

In the UK version of Transcendental Blues, the bonus material was live versions of Copperhead Road and the Galway Girl if I remember correctly. The Japanese release had a cover of Nirvana's "Breed".

It's things like that along with songs he did for films.

There are details here -

and for the second volume -

I should be able to help you out with these...I have them somewhere.

There's also something called Uncut Gems.
