And While I'm At It: The Civil Wars.

itfc1959's picture

They knocked me out when I saw them on Later. Was it only me who found her outrageously sexy? All that aside, I loved their arrangement of this. It shows that this is actually a very good song.

I'm surprised I haven't read anyone else singing their praises on here. Or maybe I blinked and missed it.

it wasn't only you

raises hand nervously.

Enjoyed

watching her.

He's probably something for the ladies, but I'll stand ready to be corrected on that.

Music - just terrible.

It'll sell shed-loads.

0
Slick | 16 October 2011 - 1:10pm

It is a good song

but that's not a good version.

grac | 15 October 2011 - 8:47pm

Have to agree.

Billie Jean, it is widely accepted, is one of the truly great pop songs. It doesn't need to be reinterpreted in a 'credible' style to allow us to admit to liking it.

One verse was enough for the novelty to wear off.

But yes, she was not uneasy on the eye.

1
DougieJ | 15 October 2011 - 11:26pm

Widely accepted?

Not by me it isn't. Average pop song by a hugely overrated artist.

count jim moriarty | 16 October 2011 - 12:37pm

All about opinions.

I know it's hard to think back to a pre 'Wacko-Jacko' time, but to me Off the Wall and Thriller (and BJ in particular) still stand out as exceptionally well-produced and performed albums.

To be fair, me saying that Billie Jean is 'widely accepted' as one of the great pop singles is hardly an envelope-pushing statement. Just as it's 'widely accepted' that The Beatles were the greatest band of all time. That still leaves room for people such as yourself to say 'well that may be the case, but I can't stand him / it / them'.

1
DougieJ | 16 October 2011 - 9:18pm

I can confirm that it's not only you...

she is a total babe. That was excellent, thanks for posting.

Mac45 | 15 October 2011 - 9:24pm

sorry

but that is a lot of warbling rubbish. I couldn't quite get the timing there. Yes, the girl is sexy.

4
rocker43 | 15 October 2011 - 9:50pm

Yeap!

a lounge act, do some 'new'

0
James Blast | 15 October 2011 - 10:52pm

"Was it only me who found her outrageously sexy?"

No, I am 100% with you on that.

I imagine the ladies of the blog might like the J.Depp-a-like on guitar too. Fame awaits.

kidpresentable | 15 October 2011 - 10:30pm

I Googled The Young Lady

and her name is Joy Williams. It seems that prior to hitching up with Johnny Depp in 2009, she had already sold over 250,000 records in the USA under her own name. Blimey.

1
itfc1959 | 15 October 2011 - 10:46pm

Christian music

It's a massive market.

What's that, you didn't realise the girl who looked like she should have been in a David Lynch movie was a good Christian girl?

0
SimonL | 15 October 2011 - 11:02pm

Yes, I did know that.

There's an interview on-line where she spouts the most frightful bollocks, in my humble opinion of course. This doesn't seem to make her any different from a huge number of other Americans. And she still looks absolutely filthy, in spite of this handicap.

1
itfc1959 | 15 October 2011 - 11:07pm

I didn't know

Until I *ahem* looked into her...background.

But then Katy Perry has a similar background, including musically.

0
SimonL | 15 October 2011 - 11:12pm

"And she still looks absolutely filthy.."

Aye.

You kick Johnny Depp in the cods for me and I'll carry her off.

3
Lenny Law | 16 October 2011 - 12:06am

Raises hand

I went and bought the album the next day. Lots of performances on youtube too...

Love the way the voices work together too.

2
SimonL | 15 October 2011 - 10:47pm

Out of my way, boys.

I've already mentioned elsewhere (http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/the-silver-seas-later#comment-4794...) that I couldn't help but think that the female half of the act reminded me very much of a young Grace Slick. Without that voice, sadly, but with the same slightly feral sexuality.

Where's my Bible and crucifix? When does prayer study start? I'm sitting next to her, and you'd better believe it. I'm weak and mindful to sin. Lord have Mercy. Hallelujah! etc etc.

Vulpes Vulpes | 16 October 2011 - 9:12am

You're a man with sharp vision

clearly Vulpsy. Funny how in her little black dress she is a million times more fanciable than the composite Girlsabeyoncygagapinkycherylblahblah in their trashy underwear and ass shaking. They are enough to put you off for life.

0
Twangothan | 16 October 2011 - 7:07pm

(i know it's not what you're saying)

but I do think her 'sexiness' is every bit as contrived as the artists mentioned in your post.
A horrible performance and, no, not sexy either.

1
badartdog | 16 October 2011 - 9:22pm

We just have different tastes

I like LBD with eyes, (possibly faux) modesty and harmony singing. You like the voluptuous type. Takes all sorts.

Twangothan | 17 October 2011 - 12:48am

Ahem

You did indeed blink

http://www.wordmagazine.co.uk/content/have-a-listen-the-civil-wars

I'm somewhat annoyed that their tour support to Adele was only announced long after the tour sold out so I've yet to see them live

Candi Payne Misses Out Again.

Did the retro 60's album only to be pipped by Dffy to the release date now been doing the circuit in Liverpool as a duo - does the set up look familiar?

0
Tony Donaghey | 16 October 2011 - 12:09pm

I Want Candy

She has a great voice, and that first album of hers is pretty damn good.

0
SimonL | 16 October 2011 - 1:36pm

Indeed It Is Very Good

just it got lost in the timimg of the release.

0
Tony Donaghey | 16 October 2011 - 4:51pm

Whaaaaat?

Candi Payne is, indeed, somewhat toothsome and it is this which tends to distract people from the fact that she couldn't carry a tune if it was given to her in a bucket. She sings flatter than a kipper's dick. Her album, which I purchased following a glowing WORD review, was unlistenable and also made all the milk in my fridge go turny. Her performances on Later.. were toe-curling.

0
Lenny Law | 16 October 2011 - 10:01pm

Vile

in every concievable fashion.
And if our only way to redeem this abortion of a cover is to find the female "sexy" i would seriously scrub up your sexual politics.
OOAA!

0
drilltime | 16 October 2011 - 5:02pm

i before e except after c

And, er, wrong.

1
itfc1959 | 16 October 2011 - 8:41pm

As ever

a correction of syntax.
The aesthetic judgement remains yours.
Like my own, it is subjective.

0
drilltime | 16 October 2011 - 9:46pm

Hmm, "filthy" ...

I was called "filth" to my face in the street the other week by some total nob-head who also told me exactly what he wanted to do to me whilst making a grab for my knockers.

I wonder if I looked "filthy" that day.

4
andielou | 16 October 2011 - 7:29pm

I don't wish to deny the ghastliness of your experience,

but don't you think that the context of the remark above that used the word 'filthy', and the context of the use of the word 'filth' to which you were subjected, are a million miles apart?

2
Vulpes Vulpes | 16 October 2011 - 7:55pm

One would hope so.

Seeing that girl described as "filthy" just reminded me of the incident that's all.

I understand that it wasn't meant in a horrible way but it's not the nicest way to describe a lady IMHO.

3
andielou | 16 October 2011 - 8:34pm

If I could retract that statement, then I would.

Didn't look good in print. Apologies all round.

2
itfc1959 | 16 October 2011 - 10:06pm

I'd agree that the phrase lacks decorum,

but I suspect it's no worse than a woman saying of a bloke, "Phwoar, I like a bit of rough".

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 17 October 2011 - 8:35am

That was shit.

The female singer is pretty, but that hardly makes up for that appalling version of a great pop song.

Oh, and while I'm at it, I hate band names that just don't fit in any way whatsoever with the kind of music being performed. I'm not saying that a name has to make literal sense, but it should at least compliment the music, even if only in a nebulous way. The Civil Wars? Give me an effin' break... that's just a name chosen by people who think they're too cool for school.

2
Patrick Crowther | 16 October 2011 - 8:17pm

True.

From the name, one might expect their music to be something like Bellowhead or maybe The Decemberists.

But, being damned good-looking, they'll do well whatever anodyne tosh they produce. Bastards.

Bitter? Moi?

0
DougieJ | 16 October 2011 - 10:14pm

That

was terrible.

And when did annoyingly mannered coquettishness become "sexy"?

2
Ahh_Bisto | 16 October 2011 - 11:01pm

Janice? Who the fuck is Janice?

Well, it's better than this cover of the same song:

It's not awful, just, I dunno. It feels a bit like Travis's cover of "Hit Me Baby One More Time" or Jose Gonzalez's version of Kylie's "Hand on Your Heart" - just slowed down a bit and played on an acoustic guitar. In all three cases the song's the winner.

1
milkybarnick | 16 October 2011 - 11:07pm

Civil Wars on Later

I actually wrote something but didn't post it on an earlier thread about the the Silver Seas. It was along the lines of the Civil Wars having completely stolen the attention of the interested but bi-partisan viewer i.e me.

Stunned enough by the Civil Wars' peformance to immediatelyt buy their album before the programme had even ended. The wonders of having a tablet on your lap and large quantities of Albarino handy when you're watching telly.

1
Sebastian Beach | 16 October 2011 - 11:33pm

Upper middle class Pish...

What is it with you English and this type of shite? Do you really think anyone wants to hear, let alone buy this crap? I think you might want to think about occupying the BBC as well.
