"...And SCENE"

MichaelC's picture

Watching the Brazil North Korea game today on ESPN, I heard Martin Tyler make an odd comment after a crowd shot of some (supposed) North Korean fans. He said that there was a rumour going round that the fans were actually handpicked actors from China who were paid by the Chinese to pretend to be North Koreans. Anybody else heard this one?

You know...

... it did cross my mind that I wondered how those North Koreans got out of the country.

Did you see the sign someone was holding up in the crowd just before kick of? It said "Kim Jong-Il Thinks I'm At Work."

Brilliant!

Any chance of some blokes being handpicked from the crowd so that we can see a decent game?

Spot on Ranger

The games have been pretty dreadful with the exception of the Germany - Australia game where Germany played some pretty attractive attacking football and got their rewards for it. It seems like most teams are adopting the attitude of it's better to draw than to try and win but end up losing.
Hopefully when we reach the knockout stages we might see some decent games.

Knock Out Stages

I think it's likely to get worse. Once through to the second round teams will be even more desperate not to lose and would rather take their chance with penalties.

Fans

They looked Korean, not Chinese. I'd imagine they were trusted party members given special dispensation to travel.

The first matches

are nearly always dull affairs, and I can clearly remember 1966 when everybody was moaning about England's early displays. I think it's because nobody wants to lose (more so than usual), so there is a highly cautious approach by most teams, even Brazil last night. I think the second round of group games will throw up some more interesting matches as it becomes more important to win.
Whilst here, what does everybody think of the ITV after match James Corden show? I find some of it immensely watchable and other bits not so.

It said on the Chris Evans show this morning

that they were North Korean military who were flown in specially. When asked who their favourite player was, they apparently didn't know any of their names. Still no idea if this is true or not, but it was a good excuse last night to show my son the 'I'm so Ronery' clip from Team America. So wrong but so funny.

I agree with the views on the quality of the football. It is very dull. My theory is that nearly every manager has been copying Jose Mourinho's tactics with Inter. They all seem to be using this 2 banks of 4 defence.
Irish gaelic fans will know of Tyrone's use of hand passing and crowding the player which was adopted by most of the other teams which has nearly killed our game and made it very hard to watch.
I fear the same might be happening to soccer.

ITV also mentioned that rumour

Basically, no-one actually knows who they were, so it's all just theories. Also, no-one knows whether it was being shown in North Korea or they just recorded it and would only show it if they won

Surely the good people of North Korea...

...will be dancing in the streets after watching their team beat Brazil 1-0...
