Entertainment For Lively Minds
"...and this, is me"
Posted by Paolo Meccano on 9 August 2010 - 4:26pm.
Time was when light-entertainment personalties and other minor celebrities used to have a go at a bit of 'serious' singing: were any of those songs ever any good?
To start you off, here's a cracking tune from Mike Reid.

You've done this on purpose..!
One of my favourite topics 8-}
Sir Anthony Hopkins - Distant Star
Blimey, that's good!
Really, wasn't expecting that. Here's another version, equally fine.
My Favorite example of this kind of thing.
David "Blow Up" Hemmings, in 1967 did an album called David Hemmings Happens, backed by The Byrds. This particular Gene Clarke penned tune is a genuine gem.
Also Robert Michum did a calypso album
This is from it... I rather like it.
Didn't Mike Yarwood
always finish his shows with "and this, is me"?
Yea and...
he could not hold a tune in a great big bucket. I tried to find some of Mike singing earlier but came up with this instead - ABBA camping it up as Larry Grayson. Them were the days.
ABBA on Mike Yarwood Show
Sigh
Agnetha Fältskog...
Properly, unironically good (and that even includes Yarwood).
Ronnie Corbett
Recorded, as I believe the Radio Times had it, to broaden his appeal.
How did that go, then?

Anyone do better?
She's got a fine pair
of lungs on her 8-}
Think she ended up on Broadway because of this song, but I might be meringue.
Barbara Windsor - Sparrows Can't Sing
Hit or Miss ?
From The Candyman's playlist
I always thought this was a bit bizarre
Richard Harris - MacArthur Park
Great Jimmy Webb song, OTT production, singer that can hardly carry a tune in a bucket, yet somehow it works.
Jack Duckworth sings...
Not bad, actually.
Found it!
Charlie Drake released a single in 1975 called "You Never Know". Nothing unusual in that - he was a popular comedy actor and novelty record releaser in his time. However, this particular record has had articles written about it in magazines such as Mojo and Classic Rock in the past. Why?
Well because it was released on the Charisma label. It was co-written and produced by Peter Gabriel. Musicians on the track include Phil Collins, Robert Fripp and Sandy Denny. It was never a hit and I picked up loads of copies for 30p each but I am down to my last one now - all the rest were given away as gifts to bemused recipients.
See what you think.

Stop press: listen to the Peter Gabriel demo!

I've got that
digitally somewhere. I was pleasantly surprised, but think I'll check out the Gariel version too. Thanks.
They should have used it themselves
The Gabriel version is rather nice. It sounds like it was from the Selling England... sessions. It would possibly have made a good follow-up single to I Know What I Like.
John Lennon's school mate
has a go at a Stones' song on the collectable Immediate label.
Insert gap-toothed cheeky chappie line here:
John Lennon's ex-wife
Much discussed by the North West Massive at past events.
Cynthia Lennon - Those Were The Days
Steady, ladies...
...here's Lewis Collins.
Jon Pertwee
"I am the Doctor"
Although I presume he knew it was rubbish.
Reginald Bosanquet
If you don't know who he is ask your dad. Wonder if Dr. Volume has a copy for the Christmas shindig? I'll bring mine in case...
Dance With Me
Welcome
to the "hic" Newsh At Ten! "hic"
I realise he's singing in character...
...but it's still a great record: -
