Am I missing something?

Simon Ford's picture

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy cooking, I even quite enjoy Masterchef, particularly the professional version.

But what's it doing on for an hour and a half on Thursday and then back on BBC1 at 9 on a Friday night?

Are the BBC really that desperate for some cheap tv to fill the schedules? Or is it just me that thinks that when the Beeb finds some reality tv that is moderately popular (Strictly, Apprentice,et.) it bleeds it to death?

There's certainly no shortage of cooking on the BBC at the moment with Short and Blanc and probably countless others on daytime. Does anyone here watch any of them?

I Like Masterchef

but couldn't be bothered with it last night. Dragging it out for too long has made lose its pace and punch.

exactly

last night was just three episodes shoved together on prime time BBC1. I watched the first half hour and thought you've got to be heavily into this to watch another two.

haven't seen this yet

but sounds like they commissioned a series to spread over a week and then decided to put it out over two nights instead. With all the reviews of already seen "action" and previews of "what's coming up next" most of these shows can be any length from 15 mins to 3 hours!

I could be wrong

... but maybe the reason most telly is crap is because the people who work in it are drawn from a very shallow gene pool, have little to offer in the way of imagination or insight and -sadly- have very low opinions of the folk who actually watch telly and, of course, help pay their wages.

I'd love you to tell..

...that face to face to my FPO when she comes in tonight.

Shallow gene pool ? After she has kicked you in the balls and you are writhing on the floor, she will no doubt explain her megre roots which couldn't be further from the stereotype you infer.

No offence intended

... to anyone here, of course. I apologise and should have made it clearer that I was talking, if you will, about an intellectual gene pool. The 'class' thing (which you took to be the focus of my post) is actually of no interest to me. I should have more accurately stated my case that the mainstream media would appear to be in favour of every kind of diversity, except intellectual diversity.
But that's probably for another thread.

Master Slog

I agree, an hour and a half is just too long and it loses its punch after an hour. Why couldn't they have just kept it to half an hour very night for a few weeks?

Sad As I Am...

...in this same slot for the last number of weeks has been the fluff of a TV show called Material Girl - not great but pleasant. Last week the show ends "next week the final show of the season see what happens to all these characters but instead of Thursday 8pm find it on Wednesday at 10.45pm."
Now I'm sorry but if they're canning it why not just wait for that last week??

I...

...wasn't aware it was on but thoroughly enjoyed the last of 'Shetland Stories' or diaries or whatever it was called... much better than watching wannabee cooks burning the jus...

Me?

saw a little but was much happier with a book, then Mock The Week and the inimitable Rab C. Last night's Burns Night shenannigans were great great fun.

But several people have got it right. BBC1 in particular have a habit of taking a hit and wrining it till it bleeds all over the carpet. Which was why Strictly Come Dancing tanking on Christmas night was a lovely thing to (not) see. It's also why I'm glad Doctor Who was only there sparingly last year. Can't we just have good things in small doses? Is that really so very much to ask?

Overegging the pudding

I'm a fan of the dog-faced shouters but 90 minutes is too long.

Absolutetly

There are only so many confused plates you can take looking at in one night

Nothing doing

I remember when Thursday used to be the night I needed 2 VCRs to keep up (TOTP & Tomorrows World for starters). These days (especially when there's European footie on Tuesday & Wednesday) it's good that there's nothing I want to watch on to give me a chance to catch up with things I've recorded.

I remember when...

... Thursday night was the start of the weekend (a sort of Friday night-lite, just to get in the mood). Now I'm watching a woman telling two men that she wants to run her own cookery course somewhere in the country, prior to ruining duck, cous-cous and peas and getting booted off at the first hurdle. What has become of me?
