Alex Turner appreciation thread

Chimney Singing Cheryl Cole's picture

I've not yet heard any of the new Arctic Monkeys material or the Submarine stuff, but I was reminded of his lyrical skills this morning when 'The View From The Afternoon' popped up on shuffle

And she won’t be surprised and she won't be shocked
When she’s pressed the star after she's pressed unlock
And there’s verse and chapter sat in her inbox
And all that it says is that you've drank a lot....

You can pour your heart out around 3 o clock
When the 2 for 1's undone the writers block.

There's hundreds of other lyrical gems - which are your favourite?

Pretty much all of

Fluorescent Adolescent

You used to get it in your fishnets
Now you only get it in your nightdress
Discarded all the naughty nights for niceness
Landed in a very common crisis.

And later in the same song, the line: "was it a Mecca dobber or a betting pencil?" always makes me smile.

I think Alex Turner's marvellous; the best lyricist since Jarvis.

Must be something

in the water.

I fully agree too, I'll post my examples tomorrow when I'm not in so much of a rush. Mind you, as we're kind of talking about Jarvis too, I've decided that the best opening line of all time (c.f. previous opinions etc) is now:

"Is the way the say the future's meant to feel,
Or just twenty-thousand people standing in a field?"

Tender and funny

(Mardy Bum)
When you're argumentative
And you've got the face on

(Ritz to the Rubble)
Last night these two bouncers
And one of em's all right
The other one's the scary 'un
His way or no way, totalatarian

(Fake Tales...)
I'd love to tell you all my problems
You're not from New York City, you're from Rotherham

He's like a young Paul Weller

...needs to crack on with the dress sense now.

Despair In The Departure Lounge

He's got the feeling again
This time on the aeroplane
There might be tellys in the back of the seats in front
But Rodney and Del won't do
Although it might take your mind off the aches and the pains
Laugh when he falls through the bar
But you're feeling the same
'Cause she isn't there to hold your hand
She won't be waiting for you when you land

Any chance of the next album being a little less RAWK and a little more like this? I almost think he finds this kind of thing too easy.

Halo Jones

has a great story arc and a fantastic female central character.

Long story but

suffice to say my boys can't listen to "Mardy Bum", too close to home.

Alex Turner

I want to be his mum. Tho then again I guess she doesn't see much of him nowadays.

From the last album

'I elongated my lift home, yeah I let him go the wrong way round
I smelt your scent on the seatbelt and kept my shortcuts to myself'
