Album cover peephole game

minibreakfast's picture

Whilst playing some LPs this afternoon I put an empty inner bag on top of a sleeve and realised that some album covers are more recognisable than others through the centre hole. This gave me an idea for a game. Here's a fairly easy one to start, can you tell what it is? I invite you to have a rifle through your records too, give us some puzzlers and perhaps a chance to show off!

6

Stevie Wonder's 'Innervisions'...

Good game, good game!

Patrick Crowther | 12 June 2011 - 7:35pm

A bit more difficult...

Serge??

Histoire de Melody Nelson, possibly - although the colour looks a bit off.

Yep

It's Serge.

I've had all these right so far! Easy, easy!

0
phil spector | 12 June 2011 - 9:54pm

My lp collection...

...is far too mainstream I suppose. I'll give others a chance to post pics for now!

0
minibreakfast | 12 June 2011 - 10:06pm

more challenging one on its way

0

this seems appropriate:

0
Nick Duvet | 12 June 2011 - 10:58pm

When my wife and I moved in together back in 19bloody88 (which is getting on for a quarter of a blinking century ago) and pooled our record collections the only album we both had was A Distant Sore by Tracy Thorn. Is that a bit tragic? Or quite sweet. Not sure. Lovely album though.

0

Here's one I made earlier

You don't want to see the centre hole, trust me ;-)

Answers along the lines of Last Chicken In The Shop and Someone Sitting On Phil Lynott's Shoulders will result in instant disqualification

7
mojoworking | 15 June 2011 - 9:25am

for some reason

the word 'pendulous' has come into my head

as you were

0
Nick Duvet | 16 June 2011 - 7:50am

I've had a rummage

and found this. From the cover date, the magazine was seemingly in the racks a good few weeks before the LP (release date Nov 29, 1968). I wonder how they did that?

Also interesting to see that Maxwell was getting a kicking as early as 1968.

0
mojoworking | 16 June 2011 - 8:16am

And this?

0
minibreakfast | 19 June 2011 - 10:50am

That would be

YAZOO - You & Me Both

0
mojoworking | 19 June 2011 - 10:56am

Gosh, superfast!

0

...some new records. Have an up though!

0
minibreakfast | 19 June 2011 - 11:09am
Nick Duvet | 20 June 2011 - 2:11am

That one's

been bugging me for days. We may need a clue....

0
mojoworking | 20 June 2011 - 3:28am

seek and you will find...

..

0
Nick Duvet | 20 June 2011 - 3:54am

Of course

It's Gino Vannelli - Nightwalker.

I'd already considered that one, but I was somehow convinced the section visible was part of an impressionist painting!

0
mojoworking | 20 June 2011 - 4:19am

OK, your turn

..

0
Nick Duvet | 20 June 2011 - 5:02am

Dead easy

on the face of it, but I'm hoping the lack of context will make it harder to spot

0
mojoworking | 20 June 2011 - 5:23am

Ringo

Beaucoups Of Blues
i've never heard it, is it any good?

0
plumb1909 | 20 June 2011 - 6:36am

Put it this way...

...it's one of Ringo's better albums, but it's never been on high rotation in our house.

Here's another:

0
mojoworking | 20 June 2011 - 6:43am

I guess that

was too obscure.

How about something a little easier:

0
mojoworking | 25 June 2011 - 1:25pm

Got it!

Bob Dylan - Self Portrait!

0
el hombre malo | 25 June 2011 - 2:32pm

Here's another easy one.

0
mojoworking | 25 June 2011 - 2:42pm

Roxy Music

For your pleasure

0
Nick Duvet | 25 June 2011 - 4:21pm

Correct!

In best Times Crossword style, here's a cryptic clue to the neglected one above.

Playing a track from Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches? It's all relative, of course.

Meanwhile here's another one. It's probably dead easy.

0
mojoworking | 26 June 2011 - 4:15am

That's Wind and Wuthering....

...by Genesis, isn't it?

0
David Hepworth | 26 June 2011 - 6:48am

Exactly right

Was that the one you wanted the clue for? There's still one above (June 20) that no one has got yet, despite my cryptic clue.

0
mojoworking | 26 June 2011 - 8:03am

It's the woman that looks like Cher...

....of Rita Coolidge that I can't get.

0
David Hepworth | 26 June 2011 - 8:43am

You're on the wrong path

It's not a woman. Well, the picture is, but the LP isn't.

Think Rishikesh 1968.

0
mojoworking | 26 June 2011 - 9:16am

Another clue

It's an 80s LP by a UK male artist.

He was big (and I mean massive) in the 60s, especially in America.

0
mojoworking | 27 June 2011 - 3:01am

oh thank god for that...

Donovan, Lady of the Stars.

Personally, I think he peaked with Jennifer Juniper.

0
Helena Handcart | 27 June 2011 - 3:20am

Nice work Helena

Or that she is/was a lesbian?

That's two facts, isn't it?

0

The Fact About Hazell Dean was that she was the daughter of Brenda Dean, a former trade union leader.

0

0

Mr Google, I can say that it's "Third World War". Bit of an obscure one, there, Mr Yorkio, sir.

0
duco01 | 27 June 2011 - 12:29pm

Got it

Third World War - s/t

Very sneaky, that one ;-)

Indeed it is.

0

0

Joni Mitchell

0
David Hepworth | 27 June 2011 - 6:42pm

Ahem...

0
Helena Handcart | 27 June 2011 - 9:17pm

Another easy one

0
mojoworking | 27 June 2011 - 4:22am

Marianne Faithfull - Broken English

Warning! Parental guidance advised, due to rather salty language on "Why d'ya do it".

0
duco01 | 27 June 2011 - 8:18am

Quite so

That track was removed from the LP in some countries - Australia included.

0
mojoworking | 27 June 2011 - 9:13am

Quite right too...

After all, Australians never swear, do they...

0
Patrick Crowther | 27 June 2011 - 9:16am

Even better

Ian Dury's Plaistow Patricia arrived Downunder minus the Anglo Saxon opening incantation

Aussies clearly don't suffer from anxiety about the size of their manhood, either.

Australian pressings of Frank Zappa's 200 Motels LP were missing the track Penis Dimension.

0
mojoworking | 27 June 2011 - 9:26am

If that's the exact middle

of For the Roses, then I'm a radio.

0
Helena Handcart | 27 June 2011 - 4:26am

It is, too

mojoworking | 27 June 2011 - 7:36am

What about this?

0
Patrick Crowther | 27 June 2011 - 9:26am

Ooh ... that's one of my absolute favourites, namely

Undercurrent by Bill Evans and Jim Hall. Wasn't it one of the first covers not to feature any text whatsoever?

0
duco01 | 27 June 2011 - 9:35am

Well...

done.

0
Patrick Crowther | 27 June 2011 - 11:30am
Patrick Crowther | 27 June 2011 - 11:41am

I'm going to give a clue...

Check out the teeny footprints.

0
Patrick Crowther | 28 June 2011 - 9:30pm

Hmm…

That's not a Little Feat clue, is it? I'm sure I know this one…

0
yorkio | 29 June 2011 - 12:48pm
Patrick Crowther | 30 June 2011 - 11:59am

Nope, still no idea.

Any more clues Patrick..?

6
spt | 2 July 2011 - 7:27am

You hum it

and I still won't be able to play it..

0
STD | 3 July 2011 - 7:25pm

Skinny ties set to stun

1
yorkio | 27 June 2011 - 2:04pm

Nine below zero?

The Pleasers? The Feelies? Graduate? The Merton Parkas? An*l C*nt?

0
Pax Romana | 27 June 2011 - 9:47pm

That's

Any Trouble - Where Are All The Nice Girls

Featuring the great Clive Gregson

0
mojoworking | 27 June 2011 - 11:05pm

Back of the net

Mojoworking - he shoots, he scores.

0
yorkio | 27 June 2011 - 11:20pm

No-one's got mine

from 23rd June yet despite 2 clues. Maybe this one will be a bit easier (I judge ye not, I haven't identified a single one yet)!

0
minibreakfast | 27 June 2011 - 4:19pm

A whiff of Herb?

Looks vaguely Alpert-ish. Is that even warm?

0
WholeHogg | 27 June 2011 - 10:37pm

Red hot Hogg!

it is indeed an 'erb 6 disc box set, no actual album title, just 'Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass'. Well done you!

0
minibreakfast | 27 June 2011 - 10:56pm

And another

Image

0
David Hepworth | 27 June 2011 - 6:44pm

That's

Jim Capaldi - Short Cut Draw Blood

0
mojoworking | 27 June 2011 - 11:02pm

Since I've got two unidentified....

....does this mean you all owe me money?

1
David Hepworth | 27 June 2011 - 10:00pm

COULD WE SET A

rule that you can only post a new one when the last has been identified? I can't stand the tension.
Maybe a solution hotline like there are under the crosswords in the posh papers. That might be a revenue generator.
And I too think this is one of the greatest games ever invented.

0
PaddyH | 27 June 2011 - 10:59pm

Aw, shucks Paddy

Thanks for saying so; you've made this gal's week! The game definitely highlights yet another reason why vinyl outclasses the CD and mp3.

0
minibreakfast | 29 June 2011 - 12:28pm

No more Mr Nice Guy

I think this one is very difficult (despite being a million seller)

0
mojoworking | 28 June 2011 - 12:13am

Perhaps

someone will get this In The Long Run (that's a clue).

0
mojoworking | 30 June 2011 - 7:30am

Come the weekend

will we be seeing a #peepholeplatterday now?

0
BonzoDog | 28 June 2011 - 12:47pm

Patto...Roll em Smoke em

Patto...Roll em Smoke em

1
idonald5 | 1 July 2011 - 4:36am

...Put Another Line Out

thanks for spotting that, it's been driving me mad.

0
mojoworking | 1 July 2011 - 4:59am

How about...

0
minibreakfast | 2 July 2011 - 8:06pm

Imagination...

In the Heat of the Night.

0
Patrick Crowther | 3 July 2011 - 9:45am

The remaining

unidentified ones are making my OCD itch. I'm seriously considering upping my dosage.

0
minibreakfast | 7 July 2011 - 12:34pm

Here's a clue for mine:

Think William Blake (he said mysteriously)

0
mojoworking | 7 July 2011 - 12:42pm

Thought processes. All unproductive

William Blake…
Songs of Innocence?
Songs of Experience?
Something to do with Tyger Tyger(s of Pan Tang?)

Hmmm, was that an Eagles clue he gave us earlier?
A solo album by a member of The Eagles? The End of the Innocence? It ticks both boxes but looks nothing at all like the image.

etc

Right, back to work…

0
yorkio | 7 July 2011 - 2:29pm

Another clue

Think William Blake's most famous poem, a line thereof.

0
mojoworking | 7 July 2011 - 2:43pm

*sighs again*

0
minibreakfast | 4 September 2011 - 9:54am

Vangelis

Chariots of Fire!

0
yorkio | 8 July 2011 - 10:34am

Bravo!

At last! And here's how it should look:

0
mojoworking | 8 July 2011 - 10:47am

Here's a nice, easy one…

0
yorkio | 8 July 2011 - 11:40am

It's...

Mott The Hoople - The Hoople

0
mojoworking | 8 July 2011 - 12:19pm

Correct

In just 39 minutes!

0
yorkio | 8 July 2011 - 12:29pm

Another easy one

0
yorkio | 8 July 2011 - 2:20pm

My favourite

mid-period Rod Stewart LP - Atlantic Crossing

0
mojoworking | 8 July 2011 - 2:24pm

A few more from me

selected at random from a pile of LPs waiting to be filed.

Some are dead easy, others are more obscure. This one has a moderate degree of difficulty, I think.

0
mojoworking | 13 July 2011 - 7:00am

Hmm... it looks a bit like "Life's a riot with spy vs spy"

by the big-nosed bard of the Dorset Coast, Sir William Bragg.

0
duco01 | 13 July 2011 - 7:07am

Bah!

I mean, er, well done sir (or madam)! Only 7 mins to get that one.

Let's up the ante a little for the next one:

0
mojoworking | 13 July 2011 - 7:21am

Looks like a clue is required for this one

It's the 1968 debut LP by someone very dear to the Word community

0
mojoworking | 16 July 2011 - 1:30am

Joni Mitchell

Song to a Seagull

(I didn't think there were any left unaccounted for!)

0
yorkio | 4 September 2011 - 10:16am

Sigh, sigh...

...and thrice sigh.

I know how you feel sir

0
mojoworking | 4 September 2011 - 9:59am

Well, Miss as it happens

but thanks for your empathy. I wasn't joking about the OCD!

0
minibreakfast | 4 September 2011 - 10:07am

Sorry

for the gender error. I usually assume LP sleeve OCD to be a male thing ;-)
