Album cover peephole game
Posted by minibreakfast on 12 June 2011 - 7:33pm.
Whilst playing some LPs this afternoon I put an empty inner bag on top of a sleeve and realised that some album covers are more recognisable than others through the centre hole. This gave me an idea for a game. Here's a fairly easy one to start, can you tell what it is? I invite you to have a rifle through your records too, give us some puzzlers and perhaps a chance to show off!

Stevie Wonder's 'Innervisions'...
Good game, good game!
Stevie
Innervisions
Correct...
a nice easy start!
A bit more difficult...
Serge??
Histoire de Melody Nelson, possibly - although the colour looks a bit off.
Yep
It's Serge.
Serge
Histoire de Melody Nelson
How about this one?
Sonic Youth:
Goo
Correct!
*****
I wonder if any one nose who this is...
Memphis Belle?
Ms Springfield
It is indeed
*****
Gie's a hard one!
I've had all these right so far! Easy, easy!
My lp collection...
...is far too mainstream I suppose. I'll give others a chance to post pics for now!
ok, here's a gentle one for you
more challenging one on its way
No need to cause a commotion
Looks like my tastes are too
Looks like my tastes are too Mainstream also - Ithankyew ...
and a more difficult one
Walker Brothers
No Regrets.
Correct!
Not only a fine organiser of Word NW Massive Mingles but a man who knows his ill-advised reunion LPs in some detail
Peep show?
this seems appropriate:
That looks like
Steely Dan - Countdown To Ecstasy
indeed it is
how about this one?
John Hiatt
Slow Turning
too easy
for a man of your cal-iber
And another one...
Had to use photoshop as I don't have any vinyl.
Derek and Clive
Ad Nauseum
Didn't...
he do well!
Ooh, good game
Looking at it again, this one's probably not too difficult
That would be...
Loaded - Velvet Underground
And this?
The Undertones
Hypnotised.
Yup!
Yup!
A bit trickier
Back in the D.H.S.S.?
Half Man Half Biscuit - Back in the D.H.S.S.?
Aye
What about...
that's the Japanese flag
*bangs monitor*
MBV's
Loveless?
Or a pretty but uninhabitable planet (Noxious atmosphere).
To these ruined eyes it looks a lot like the 12" single of State Of The Nation by New Order. However, I'm confident that's not the right answer...
You're right...
...it's not.
is it...
'Disco' by the PSB's?
Yes!
V good, v good.
Owsaboutthisoneboysngirls?
It's not a "Family" album
is it?
Looks very 70s
Patrick, How Dare You!
10cc
Quite...
right.
10CC?
One of Mrs Cakes'if so...
I'm crap at this..
I've got the album and still didn't recognise it; diagonal crop and all!
Continuing with the minimalism
Continuing with the minimalism!

Rubicon
Tangerine Dream?
Spot on
Sorry to Patrick, I didn't mean to cut in.
Fret not!
;-)
Even more minimal then...
Looks a bit like
Arab Strap - the Week Doesn't...
but not sure it is
Easy?
That'll be the last Led Zep
That'll be the last Led Zep album... or the one after the last Led Zep album - depending on how you look at it.
Coda
The Zeps
Cod A? The fishy inspiration behind Kid A
Here's another for you lahverly peoples
true love stories
jilted john
with free board game
hot pick.."barry's party"
nice one
Yes, Baz's Party is my favourite.
"There's a bloke throwing up in the lavatoreee
His name's Baz ...
It's his part eee!"
And I too have the free board game
it's a masterpiece...
really...early hannett weirdness..wonky arrangements..the best couplet to end in the word "heroin" in music history...
mr fellows is an genius...
and one more before bedtime
english settlement
xtc
all copies of which seem to age the same..
Well done that person!
Drilltime - you on fire girlfren'!
My hardest one yet (fnarr, fnarr)
looks like Tracy Thorn
A distant shore
A bit tragic. Or quite sweet?
When my wife and I moved in together back in 19bloody88 (which is getting on for a quarter of a blinking century ago) and pooled our record collections the only album we both had was A Distant Sore by Tracy Thorn. Is that a bit tragic? Or quite sweet. Not sure. Lovely album though.
you da man
Hole in one
try and chip this one in
Not Joe
I thought it was Joe Ely's Down On The Drag and although I know it's not, it's an opportunity to ask the massive if I should own it.
no, not Joe Ely
and not one of Mr Bowie's later works
More Photoshop semi-cheating
Saucerful of secrets
n'est pas.
And was the one before one of Mr Bowie's latter works?
Whoops!
Whoops!
Soz
I Triple posted
You people
are too good.
I might just post a black circle and you can all argue the toss whether it's Smell The Glove, Metallica, White Light/White Heat or The Black Album.
Is it Back In Black?
No wait... Blue Monday.
Oedipus Schmoedipus?
Palace
Lost Blues and other songs
Whilst you continue to puzzle
over Mr Duvet's cover (see what I did there?), here's another pathetically easy one from me to start the day.

Might it possibly be
Depeche Mode's "Speak and Spell"?
What took you...
...so long?!
personally
if i was awake when it was posted it would have taken one second...i'm a real brian griffin fiend..
Yeah,
I hear the dog off Family Guy has a real talent for photography :)
Here's one I made earlier
You don't want to see the centre hole, trust me ;-)
Answers along the lines of Last Chicken In The Shop and Someone Sitting On Phil Lynott's Shoulders will result in instant disqualification
for some reason
the word 'pendulous' has come into my head
as you were
I've had a rummage
and found this. From the cover date, the magazine was seemingly in the racks a good few weeks before the LP (release date Nov 29, 1968). I wonder how they did that?
Also interesting to see that Maxwell was getting a kicking as early as 1968.
And this?
That would be
YAZOO - You & Me Both
Gosh, superfast!
Last one from me...

Sorry, sorry, sorry
It's Kraftwerk - Radio-Acttivity
I must get...
...some new records. Have an up though!
still waiting for you to get the one I posted above
..
That one's
been bugging me for days. We may need a clue....
seek and you will find...
..
Of course
It's Gino Vannelli - Nightwalker.
I'd already considered that one, but I was somehow convinced the section visible was part of an impressionist painting!
OK, your turn
..
Dead easy
on the face of it, but I'm hoping the lack of context will make it harder to spot
Ringo
Beaucoups Of Blues
i've never heard it, is it any good?
Put it this way...
...it's one of Ringo's better albums, but it's never been on high rotation in our house.
Here's another:
I guess that
was too obscure.
How about something a little easier:
Got it!
Bob Dylan - Self Portrait!
Bravo!
Here's another easy one.
Roxy Music
For your pleasure
Correct!
In best Times Crossword style, here's a cryptic clue to the neglected one above.
Playing a track from Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches? It's all relative, of course.
Meanwhile here's another one. It's probably dead easy.
That's Wind and Wuthering....
...by Genesis, isn't it?
Exactly right
Was that the one you wanted the clue for? There's still one above (June 20) that no one has got yet, despite my cryptic clue.
It's the woman that looks like Cher...
....of Rita Coolidge that I can't get.
You're on the wrong path
It's not a woman. Well, the picture is, but the LP isn't.
Think Rishikesh 1968.
Another clue
It's an 80s LP by a UK male artist.
He was big (and I mean massive) in the 60s, especially in America.
oh thank god for that...
Donovan, Lady of the Stars.
Personally, I think he peaked with Jennifer Juniper.
Nice work Helena
I feel the rot set in around 1973 following Essence to Essence (also featured in this thread, funnily enough).
This one is driving me mad
Give me a clue or I give in.
Postie just delivered a new lp!
Clue: it's a reissue.

Don't be afraid to
ask for a clue if you'd like one.
Go on then
Gis a clue
Female...
...soul/funk
Came out
in 1969
*sighs*
I'm a bit late to this game
Frank Sinatra
Songs For Swingin' Lovers!
And furthermore...
That's
Jacksons - Victory
And allow me to add...
Flipping it 90 degrees ccw won't fool us
Belinda Carlisle - Belinda
Actually that's good idea, broadening the game to allow any detail from an LP sleeve, not just the centre.
More feet
I think I know this...
Is it Hazell Dean? Gawd knows why I remember it, it is so uninspiring. Someone can follow up with the One Fact Everyone Knew About Hazell Dean...
Wheat allergy
Wheat allergy. No bread, pasta etc.
It is indeed
Congratulations
Meanwhile...
...percussionists the world over are groaning inwardly at the thought of the damage those stilettos are doing to the congas
One fact....
...was it that she was from Chelmsford, Essex unlike everyone else in pop?
Or that she is/was a lesbian?
That's two facts, isn't it?
V poor!
The Fact About Hazell Dean was that she was the daughter of Brenda Dean, a former trade union leader.
Never heard that before
...is it like the Bob Holness/Baker St gag that got repeated again and again?
Damn!
A quick wiki search suggests it was indeed an urban myth. Unless Brenda Dean had a child when she was 14...
And another...
It's amazing
how often Millie Jackson on the lav crops up.
It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Here's 3 more from me
Not central but all with the standard issue inner sleeve peep hole
That's
Donovan - Essence To Essence
Fast work
Nicely done Mojo W
2 of 3
I know!
The Woodentops - Wooden Foot Cops On The Highway
Correct!
At ease now gravy boy
and finally
Pillows and prayers?
Something by felt or on creation?
warm ...
It's on Creation and Felt are on it
Doing It for the Kids
Doing It for the Kids
Pillows & Prayers?
Pillows & Prayers?
Yorkio Yor Right
Doing It For ver Kids - 70% bought it for "Christine" by House of Love, 25% for Cigarette in My Bed" by MBV and the remaining 5% shared equally by the likes of Heidi Berry, Biff Bang Pow! and Emily.
And another one
A clue
Released on Fly Records in 1971
Well, after that clue and a brief chat with my nice friend
Mr Google, I can say that it's "Third World War". Bit of an obscure one, there, Mr Yorkio, sir.
Got it
Third World War - s/t
Very sneaky, that one ;-)
Well played
Good game, good game!
OK. Some more.
Ooh! Ooh! at last I know one!
It's "Frogs, Sprouts, Clogs and Krauts" by the Rumour. Yes, indeedy.
And again
Is it Black Widow?
.
This one
is giving me sleepless nights. It's so familiar.
Clue please.
Is it Peter Frampton?
Is it Peter Frampton? Frampton Comes Alive?
Who's this young fellow?
None other than
Ted Nugent - Cat Scratch Fever
The Nuge
Indeed it is.
Three more from me
Joni Mitchell
For The Roses
Ahem...
You're not supposed to read the blog back to front, you know.
Another easy one
Marianne Faithfull - Broken English
Warning! Parental guidance advised, due to rather salty language on "Why d'ya do it".
Quite so
That track was removed from the LP in some countries - Australia included.
Quite right too...
After all, Australians never swear, do they...
Even better
Ian Dury's Plaistow Patricia arrived Downunder minus the Anglo Saxon opening incantation
Aussies clearly don't suffer from anxiety about the size of their manhood, either.
Australian pressings of Frank Zappa's 200 Motels LP were missing the track Penis Dimension.
If that's the exact middle
of For the Roses, then I'm a radio.
It is, too
You're on a roll Helena!
Thankfully I resisted the temptation to use the inside gatefold, showing Joni's bare botty.
And a slightly tougher one to finish
Bah!
Double (click) Trouble
Galdys' Leap
by the Fairports, if I'm not mistaken.
Well done
that man!
What about this?
Ooh ... that's one of my absolute favourites, namely
Undercurrent by Bill Evans and Jim Hall. Wasn't it one of the first covers not to feature any text whatsoever?
Well...
done.
If anyone gets this I'll be very impressed...
I'm going to give a clue...
Check out the teeny footprints.
Hmm…
That's not a Little Feat clue, is it? I'm sure I know this one…
Doesn't look like anyone's going to get this...
Nope, still no idea.
Any more clues Patrick..?
You hum it
and I still won't be able to play it..
Skinny ties set to stun
Nine below zero?
The Pleasers? The Feelies? Graduate? The Merton Parkas? An*l C*nt?
That's
Any Trouble - Where Are All The Nice Girls
Featuring the great Clive Gregson
Back of the net
Mojoworking - he shoots, he scores.
No-one's got mine
from 23rd June yet despite 2 clues. Maybe this one will be a bit easier (I judge ye not, I haven't identified a single one yet)!

A whiff of Herb?
Looks vaguely Alpert-ish. Is that even warm?
Red hot Hogg!
it is indeed an 'erb 6 disc box set, no actual album title, just 'Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass'. Well done you!
And another
That's
Jim Capaldi - Short Cut Draw Blood
Since I've got two unidentified....
....does this mean you all owe me money?
COULD WE SET A
rule that you can only post a new one when the last has been identified? I can't stand the tension.
Maybe a solution hotline like there are under the crosswords in the posh papers. That might be a revenue generator.
And I too think this is one of the greatest games ever invented.
Aw, shucks Paddy
Thanks for saying so; you've made this gal's week! The game definitely highlights yet another reason why vinyl outclasses the CD and mp3.
No more Mr Nice Guy
I think this one is very difficult (despite being a million seller)
Perhaps
someone will get this In The Long Run (that's a clue).
Come the weekend
will we be seeing a #peepholeplatterday now?
Patto...Roll em Smoke em
Patto...Roll em Smoke em
...Put Another Line Out
thanks for spotting that, it's been driving me mad.
How about...
Imagination...
In the Heat of the Night.
Correct! How about this car boot bargain from this morning...
The remaining
unidentified ones are making my OCD itch. I'm seriously considering upping my dosage.
Here's a clue for mine:
Think William Blake (he said mysteriously)
Thought processes. All unproductive
William Blake…
Songs of Innocence?
Songs of Experience?
Something to do with Tyger Tyger(s of Pan Tang?)
Hmmm, was that an Eagles clue he gave us earlier?
A solo album by a member of The Eagles? The End of the Innocence? It ticks both boxes but looks nothing at all like the image.
etc
Right, back to work…
Another clue
Think William Blake's most famous poem, a line thereof.
*sighs again*
Vangelis
Chariots of Fire!
Bravo!
At last! And here's how it should look:
Here's a nice, easy one…
It's...
Mott The Hoople - The Hoople
Correct
In just 39 minutes!
Another easy one
My favourite
mid-period Rod Stewart LP - Atlantic Crossing
A few more from me
selected at random from a pile of LPs waiting to be filed.
Some are dead easy, others are more obscure. This one has a moderate degree of difficulty, I think.
Hmm... it looks a bit like "Life's a riot with spy vs spy"
by the big-nosed bard of the Dorset Coast, Sir William Bragg.
Bah!
I mean, er, well done sir (or madam)! Only 7 mins to get that one.
Let's up the ante a little for the next one:
Looks like a clue is required for this one
It's the 1968 debut LP by someone very dear to the Word community
Joni Mitchell
Song to a Seagull
(I didn't think there were any left unaccounted for!)
Sigh, sigh...
...and thrice sigh.
I know how you feel sir
Well, Miss as it happens
but thanks for your empathy. I wasn't joking about the OCD!
Sorry
for the gender error. I usually assume LP sleeve OCD to be a male thing ;-)
