Ahoy! It's the new podcast!
New podcast is winging its way to you now, in which Mark Ellen, David Hepworth and Matt Hall discuss DJing at parties, songwriting summer schools, the difficulty of putting on socks in the morning and why George Jones never made it to the second show, with Chris Difford. Chris's new album "The Last Temptation Of Chris" is out soon and he's on tour in April. See his site for details. Go here to subscribe or listen.

Vasectomy Song
The Boxcar Preachers have recorded a song about vasectomy, or, to be precise, a vasectomy reversal.

Looking forward to it as ever but why does it take so long to download from iTunes compared to other podcasts of similar file sizes? I have conducted highly scientific trials and Word takes bloody ages. I doubt it's my connection because the other podcasts I subscribe to download fine. Any techie care to comment?
Speed
We host the audio with Hipcast, who offer free file hosting to podcasters. As it's a free service, they're not able to offer the kind of bandwidth that, say, the BBC has at its disposal. This might explain the download speeds being slower than those from podcasters with more resources.
Having said that, though, it shouldn't take too long - certainly no more than a few minutes.
Hi Fraser I'm on a 2Mb
Hi Fraser
I'm on a 2Mb connection (virgin media), about 250kb per second and in recent weeks the downloads have been taking about 20 mins, they used to be much much quicker, irrespective of the time of day I'm downloading. Has anyone else mentioned it? I notice it especially with the archived 'casts but now it happens on the new releases each week. This week's took about 20 minutes, for instance.
Can I suggest...
you go here to see how wide your pipe is?

I'm on a Virgin 2 meg pipe as well, and it's rather interesting to see how fast it's actually operating at.
Having said that, my download takes no more than five minutes, so I think it must be something at your end.
Download speed
Could also be one download is really fast.
But if 100 people are trying to download the file at the same time [ie: having just received an email or facebook message then diving right in], then these downloads will be slower.
Its the same principal as trying to get on the phone to tickmaster at exactly the same time as everyone else..
Very odd
We've actually noticed that it's got quicker of late. This has also been the experience of quite a few users. I just tried it and it took 90 seconds. Mind you I recently got on to my broadband provider and complained that access wasn't quick enough and they upgraded me. Had I not complained they wouldn't have done
Captain Speedy
Well, I dont bloomin' know! I tried Matt's suggested site and got a speed reading approaching 2Mb. I then tried an alternative site ("internet frog") who told me it was much slower (300Kb). I'll keep an eye on things, perhaps there's some bad vibes around here. I read last night that BT bought someone a new tv because the old one was interfering with their nieghbours' broadband connections, perhaps I'll try that route. . . !
For fear of turning this into an IT helpdesk I'll shut up now. Thanks for the help, y'all.
I find it adds to the enjoyment
I start the leisurely download about half an hour before my colleagues disappear, and then kick back in my chair to listen to it as the last one departs - sheer wind-down heaven. Of course, I have to pause it when the cleaners come in, not so much because Mr Ellen might upset their sensibilities with an Aussie poem, more because they'd think I'm a bit odd listening to a bunch of middle-aged blokes jabbering about pop music at my age.
Think of it
as queueing for the bar as if you've got one of those faces which always gets ignored. Don't try waving a tenner - that just winds 'em up.
Speed
I'm down here in New Zealand and my download takes about 15min, but we're 13 hrs ahead? Am I getting it before anyone else?? Or is some Steven Hawking giggery pokery going on?
I think you'll find ...
...that you're listening to it before we've even recorded it. If you were to ring us up and play it down the phone, the ensuing time loop would cause the world to fold in upon itself. Or something.
I claim this weeks prize for
I claim this weeks prize for the most apposite place to listen to the podcast. I listened to most of it on the tube this morning and decided to listen to the rest at the gym. Imagine my surprise as Mr Difford began singing...
