Adele overrated?

Huw Williams's picture

Reading this month's Word on "Whatever happened to singing" brought Adele to mind. Everyone seems to like her but I find her endless bellowing tedious. There's no light and shade, no light touch to anything she does. Everything is full on, belted out at maximum volume - the X-factor approach to emoting. Any one agree?

I find her really boring,

I find her really boring, not my cup of tea at all.

just like..

Alison Moyet all over again

0
boredjames | 14 January 2012 - 10:53pm

Indeed

AM's stentorian hooting rapidly palled.

sitheref2409 | 15 January 2012 - 12:51pm

Oh not this again.

She's nothing like Alison blimmin' Moyet!

*becomes trapped in recursive thread loop*

I think she's good. One day she might be great. In the meantime, she commits the ultimate sin of being loved by the general public, and particularly girls, therefore she can't possibly have anything going for her.

Bob | 15 January 2012 - 9:12am

too popular, m'lud

I think she should do a duet with Richard Thompson.

2
DC Eisenhower | 15 January 2012 - 9:34am

The Moyet thing

Adele plows a similar furrow to Amy Winehouse and Duffy, yet I've never heard either of those compared to Alison Moyet. I wonder why.

It's like saying Aloe Blacc is the new Paul Young or something.

Spartacus Mills | 15 January 2012 - 11:17am

Haha!

As soon as I saw the word 'Adele' I just knew two things would occur:
1. Someone would compare her to Alf.
2. Bob would get irked by it.
Nice to know there's still some things you can rely on.

3
Mr Fade | 15 January 2012 - 11:19am

Reliable Me.

Glad to be of service. ;-)

0
Bob | 15 January 2012 - 11:49am

You saved me the bother each time

it happens. Saying they're the same is like saying Buster Bloodvessel sounds like Demis Roussos.

0
Mr Fade | 15 January 2012 - 1:17pm

But Bob...

...she's larger than a size 8, she's from Essex and she sings. She's just like Alison Moyet.

It's the same as Holly Johnson and Ian MacCulloch: they're both from Liverpool, they both sing in bands, they've both got dark hair: they're practically twins!

[/irony]

2
Red Umpire | 15 January 2012 - 12:22pm

Well

Adele is not from Essex, but I agree with your basic point.

0
JoLean | 15 January 2012 - 12:44pm

Sorry

My irony was poorly researched! :)

They're both from the South East...?

0
Red Umpire | 15 January 2012 - 1:27pm

She has a very good, potentially great voice

Currently she's not my cuppa, but could be in the future. She's certainly got the talent to be around for the long haul if that's what she wants. There's a tradition of torch-singing female belters (Shirley Bassey etc.) which she fits right into.

I think that a lot of Adele-hate seems to be from the British habit of doing down anyone who shows exceptional talent at something and becomes hugely popular. We Brits don't like people being really successful. Especially women.

The tabloid backlash will be under way soon, I'm sure. Set 'em up to knock 'em down etc.

Mike_H | 15 January 2012 - 12:54pm

Plastic soul, man

I'm not a fan, but at least Adele doesn't really do that 'why sing one note, when you can use twelve' approach so beloved of most contemporary female singers. I do agree that her default volume setting is 'loud', rising to 'really belting it out' during a chorus crescendo.

1
Stratosphear | 14 January 2012 - 11:05pm

I'm not a huge Adele fan

But I've heard both albums and I'd say your assertion that "Everything is full on, belted out at maximum volume" doesn't stand up to close scrutiny.

Exhibit A: Her almost ubiquitous single Someone Like You - a modern classic.

3
Spartacus Mills | 14 January 2012 - 11:12pm

Maybe not max volume ..

But still no subtlety, it's all right in your face

2
Huw Williams | 15 January 2012 - 1:17am

Ooh no, fingernails down the blackboard time.

I particularly hate the the histrionic bit where it 'takes off' into full on emoting. I am utterly mystified as to what the appeal is of this rotten song.

2
Dr Volume | 15 January 2012 - 3:59am

It's the ubiquity that's done it for me.

You can set your watch by the appearance of Adele on the corner shop's local radio station-tuned boombox. On the other hand, when she performed on the Brits last year I thought she was awesome. I guess that context has a lot to do with it.

0
skirky | 15 January 2012 - 1:30pm

She's ok

but prefer this version

0
Sour Crout | 15 January 2012 - 12:45am

Nah.

It's half the song without the drums and piano.

0
Mr Fade | 15 January 2012 - 11:22am

who re-names themselves legend?

I could never take this guy seriously simply on the basis that he changes his surnam to Legend. what a dick.

1
Charlie Mingles | 15 January 2012 - 12:51pm

I wouldn't know...

... I've never seen it - but maybe that's why he changed his name.

2
Formbyman | 15 January 2012 - 1:20pm

Yes

You are absolutely right. Lovely person and all that but there's nothing interesting there, just nothing...

1
Paul Thompson | 15 January 2012 - 3:08am

Sandy Denny does it for me...

More connected to her heritage...Adele obviously knows her way around a melody but it doesn't send shivers up my spine..Unlike this..

0
ablewalker | 15 January 2012 - 3:48am

I don't understand the logic..

..in comparing Adele with Sandy Denny.

0
shane pacey | 15 January 2012 - 5:48am

Adele/ Sandy Denny

Both birds ain't they? Obviously.

4
JoLean | 15 January 2012 - 12:01pm

I like Johann Sebastian Bach.

But he's no Anal Cunt.

6
Bob | 15 January 2012 - 12:12pm

Yes...a leap I know.

The initial post said Adele had no "light and Shade" and I immediately thought of Sandy Denny for some reason and this track....No logic whatsoever... ADD maybe but no logic....

1
ablewalker | 15 January 2012 - 7:39pm

Adele. This years model.

The really great singers are timeless. Ladies & Gentlemen I give you Miss Sarah Vaughan.

0
Pencilsqueezer | 15 January 2012 - 8:55am

Why all the fuss?

She's no Michelle McManus, is she?

1
badartdog | 15 January 2012 - 12:40pm

A promising start

A somewhere between a good and great voice upon which to build a career. Needs to move around a bit on stage and put a bit more personality into her act.

With the right material could become a respected artist over the coming years. Unless I've missed it she doesn't get herself into many scrapes with the media and consequently doesn't have the "character" that the public like to see their stars covered with.

She may never again have the massive chart success that she has inexplicably enjoyed to date, but there is something about her that could mean she is still a topic of conversation in three years time.

I see little or no resemblance to Alison Mo.

0
Martin Simmonds | 15 January 2012 - 1:17pm

I would sooner listen...

... to Ella or Sarah Vaughan sing any day of the week - but I'm an old fart. What Adele's achieved this last year has been remarkable - cracked America, No.1 album, writes her own songs, she can sing, fair play to her I say. She's young and appeals to young people (and old) many of whom have never heard of Sarah, Ella and Sandy?.
I can be shallow with the best of them but comparing her to Alison Moyet - come on.

0
Formbyman | 15 January 2012 - 1:49pm

God help anyone

with a modicum of talent in this country. As soon as you get recognised as a potential major star you are fucked. What is it with us? Give me Adele over Mariah fucking Carey any day. Yes there are loads of female singers I like better but you can't deny her talent and she seems like a decent grounded person as opposed to one of the many stick insect barbie doll look alikes out there.

2
Steve Turner | 15 January 2012 - 1:48pm

Uh

I don't think she's anything like Alison Moyet. Nor do I think she's a pox on the nation or needs to move around more.

She quite simply leaves me cold.

I've heard a dozen or so tunes and none of them have excited me, simple as that. Admittedly, I'm not much of a pop fan, but I can appreciate a well crafted gem of a tune from time to time (most recently: Video Games) in between the generous lashings of melody free guitar noodlings and squelchy bleepings which form the bedrock of my usual listening.

I don't hate her. But nor do I have any particular desire to hear any more of her stuff. I certainly wouldn't raise my view unless asked: she sits alongside a hundred other artists who ignite in me neither love or loathing.

I do wonder, however, about some of the "why must we build them up only to knock them down" stuff that appears above. Are people not allowed to be indifferent to her, or even possibly dislike her music a little, without there being some sort of agenda at play?

1
eminentdan1978 | 15 January 2012 - 2:11pm

She gets the kids

listening to Dylan - so she can't be all bad.

1
Slick | 15 January 2012 - 2:26pm

Like

some of my favourite musical acts (Oasis for example), if she is over-rated, it's by the people, not music journalists or their readers. She's obviously striking a chord with millions of people arond the planet, which means there's no agenda. Her popularity is a genuine word of mouth thing, with very little hype, except perhaps the self perpetuatng success story. She speaks to people in a way that Kate Bush, Bjork, Lana De Rey or Robyn never will.

Somehow I've managed to not hear the album. I loved 'Rolling in the Deep' though.

Chimney Singing... | 15 January 2012 - 7:48pm

Jim Irvin

pretty much sums up Adele's appeal in his Word 108 review of her Albert Hall DVD.
My sister's tribe (and therefore me also) were watching this at Xmas on TV.
Not my kind of stuff at all really but she's no flash in the pan. Her talent is obvious and she'll be assured of a good living from her singing as long as she wants it.

1
Mike_H | 15 January 2012 - 7:56pm

I'm the same

I quite liked Hometown Glory, but little else she has done has grabbed me. Was aware of her a few years ago but I'm not clear at what point she suddenly became so popular.

I don't really listen to much "big voice" stuff though, and she's a far better singer than most of those troubling the charts.
