Acoustic Shredders. Anyone else like em?

I know we are not the Total Guitar Forum but I do like a healthy smattering of acoustic shredding on my ipod. I now it leaves some people cold, and rarely does it feature in the mainstream music press but just for once I would like to share two favourites...
The Late & Great Eric Roche

From Chelmsford......Clive Carrol

Shredder?

How does this term derive, or is it a straight description of the finger shortening ability of the rapid strumming of stretched cheesewires.
If you will allow dobro, try this for size, emebellished a little, the great Jerry Douglas

Feck, that's my first attempt at embedding too........

Shred guitar....

from wiki

"Shred guitar or shred refers to lead electric guitar playing that relies heavily on fast passages; the act of playing fast passages on an electric guitar is termed ‘shredding’. While one critic argues that shred guitar is associated with "... sweep-picked arpeggios, diminished and harmonic minor scales, finger-tapping and ...wang-bar abuse" [1],"

Thanks for the JD link...he's a new one to me

Me too

JD is one of my favourites - see also Leo Kottke, Adrian Legge, Tommy Emanuel, and this classic

Very nice

beautiful playing....and a new name or two for me, thanks for that, and flamenco, the birthplace of it all perhaps

Al

It comes from Al Di Meola's "Elegant Gypsy" - but with just Paco de Lucia (no J Mc)which is a brilliant album - mostly electric guitar, but plenty of acoustic too - highly recommended. There's a live album with the 3 of them widdling furiously all the way through it. Superb!

SO great to see Eric Roche

SO great to see Eric Roche mentioned here. He was an awesome musician and a really lovely bloke. We were planning a tour together when his cancer came back a second time.

One of my other favourites is Don Ross - looks like a trucker, plays like an angel:

and to redress the gender imbalance, here's the genius that is Vicki Genfan:

cheers

Wow

Tour with Eric Roche. respect! He's a fantastic player. So musical - great tone, and amazing chops.

Twangothan | 22 July 2008 - 11:36am

Great to see Tommy E name-checked

Great great great player.

On the acoustic shredding front you need to check out Rodrigo y Gabriela's albums. Here's a few YouTube tantalisers...

Breathing new life into a cheesy old classic. You wait til they get going properly

And finally a little Metallica anyone?

PS There can't be TWO SoloBassSteves can there? Hi there Steve!

Bugger

You beat me to it. Rod and Gab are one of the most exciting live acts I've ever seen. They are outstanding musicians.

marmiteboy | 22 July 2008 - 5:51pm

What the heck am I doing? This is clearly...

...another chance to namecheck the fantastic Gordon Giltrap...

Crap vid but great shredding!

A medley of his hit...

Preston Reed

Have a listen to any and all of his albums, particularly 'Ladies Night'. Met him very briefly during the interval at a gig he played in Maidenhead last year. What a very nice man.

Adrian Legg. Utter brilliance. First became aware of him years and years ago when he was the featured musical act on 'Pebble Mill at One' of all things. His first album, 'Technopicker', is still the best.

A shout for Alan Prosser

As well as sterling rhythmic ballast to the Oyster Band, an exceptionally fine accoustic guitarist. 2 fine solo LPs, Hall Place and Makerfield. Also, prompted by comments above, a thoroughly decent cove, only too happy to nip out to his car and see if he has a spare copy to sell
