Entertainment For Lively Minds
ABCDEFGH ipod
Morning.
Not sure how this one will fly because as I'm finding out it's a bit fiddly.
Good people, on your ipod (should you have one) you can find all the songs contained within listed in alphabetical order. What I'd like to know is this; what are the first songs listed in alphabetical order? That is, your first song beginning with A, then B, then C and so on.
My 26 songs look like this:
A Train Lady - Mink De Ville
Baby - The Cruel Sea
C'mon C'mon - Shery Crow
Dad's Gonna Kill Me - Richard Thompson
Ear To The Ground - Matt Schofield
Face - Aerosmith

Half A Boy and Half A Man - Nick Lowe
I'd Have You Anytime - George Harrison

Wag The Dog - Mark Knopfler
X - ...?
Yakety Axe - Chet Atkins
Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
Now what I do wonder is just how many of you post EXACTLY the same songs for some letters. If you think about it a lot of us will have the same albums from the same sort of artists.
This will prove something. Something of no use to man or beast.

No time for a full list
...but I was intrigued enough to look at the first few letters and was pleased to see the symmetry:
A&B Song - Tom Mcrae
B&A - Beta Band
Couldn't continue the theme unfortunately - Cacophony (Tilly and the Wall) and D-Change (by someone called Elviss - I can't recall ever hearing this track) followed.
Reply to the OP
It's easier to do this in iTunes.
Just sayin', like.
Ah
Not so easy on a Zen Vision, it seems...
Have you ever sang an 'H'?
"No, I wouldn't have thought so".
Has Michael Nyman?
"I think he's getting close".
A walk through if not a sing-along ...

Erm
This exercise will be messed up by:
1. The fact that the iPod software seems to list punctuation before spaces. So for me the first B song listed is B-Boy Bouillabaise by the Beastie Boys, but I would argue that it should be B + A by the Beta Band.
2. Whether or not people have included punctuation in their song titles. If they have then "P.S. I Love You" would be listed earlier than if they haven't ("PS I Love You").
Sorry but this stuff is IMPORTANT! Anyway, here's the list you asked for:
'A' Bomb in Wardour Street - The Jame
B-Boy Bouillabaisse - The Beastie Boys

Suplementary Question
To all those who have so far answered (and those about to do so)
How many of us halted the wheels of commerce and industry to sit at the desk and scroll through the IPOD on a lap, whilst attempting to uphold the appearance of remaining industrious?
End of the working day
I didn't see this until near the end of the working day. But, yes, I paused in my labours (if I can describe reviewing a technical note as "labour") to riffle through my iPhone. I think the answers would be slightly different on my iPod as the iPhone has a leaning towards jazz.

Hence
"in general"!
I know The Levellers are a hokey load of dog-on-a-string nonsense, but I'm afraid I find them hugely enjoyable hokey load of dog-on-a-string nonsense.

There is, however, nothing right with this lot!
(In my defence, I took the list off iTunes rather than iPod. I don't carry this round with me every day. And it is on a chart hits compilation from early 00s, I don't own the album or anything...)
It makes an interesting playlist...

My badly-labelled shambles of an i-tunes doesn't seem to have anything beginning with X or Z.
Quite a nice list. Though it's weird to be surprised that you quite like the music you've opted to bung into your i-tunes. Might burn it onto a disc called Alphabetti Spaghetti. That Rare Earth track's a drag though. Seventeen bloody minutes. Shouldn't be allowed. Loyalty to Norman Whitfield severely tested.

A lot of classical tracks mess it up
on mine by having composer first in title, but anyway:-
A. Corelli ... [would really be Aaron by Kit Hain]
B-Flat Waltz by Brad Mehldau
C'Est Si Bon by Louis Armstrong
D.J. by David Bowie
E cosi, a poco a poco by Monteverdi
The Face I Love by Astrud Gilberto
G. F. Handel ...[really Gabriel's Oboe by Morricone]
Hafsol by Sigur Ros
I'll be around by Billie Holiday
J. Pachelbel ... [really Jack-a-Roe by the Dead]
K488 ... [really Kalon Intanvenz by Skolvan]
L'Amor by Arianna Savall
Macarthur Park by Donna Summer (followed by Harris and Webb versions)
Nachna Onda Nei by Tigerstyle
O Bone Jesu by James McMillan
Pachelbel again ...[really Pacific 707 by 808 State]
Quartier Latin by Barb Jungr
R. Strauss ... [really The Race is On by the Dead again]
S.A.X. by Yello
Tainted Love by Soft Cell
Un Air Si Doux by La Bottine Souriante
V'Adoro Puille by Handel
Waft Her Angels through the Skies by Handel again
X. Recitatif "Ecco a Morte Gia Corro" ... the Hallelujah hitmaker again [*]
Y'Outta praise him by Robert Glasper
Ziggy Stardust
So it seems the answer, as we could have guessed, is David Bowie ...
[* the only X in the list for me]
There's a variant on this that I've wondered about
for a while. If we all picked a single track that we all had-and then did a Genius playlist from it, how common would the 25 tracks be across the ensemble ?
Presumes there *is* a track that everybody, but everybody, has ...
Everybody has...
"track1"?
I thought I'd find something in common here

I'd have had the three Cathal coughlan ones too
if it weren't for Future of the Left. Two from a Young People record I never knew I had...
the man is criminally under-rated
isn't he? Never thought I'd see a 2 page David Essex feature in the mag before a CC interview.
I'm not sure he's underrated
He's had his fair share of glowing press - just unappreciated by a lot of people.
In common with a lot of music I love, I'm not sure I've ever managed to convert anyone to CC either through words or even through persuading them to listen to his music. Just have to face up to the fact that people don't share my passions.
Won't stop me trying mind you. New album this year????

I shall have to do a statiscal analysis on an Excel spreadsheet. And a pivot table. Oh Mother!
I haven't got V-2 Schnieder. Will I be court-martialled at the next drink up?
Yes, you're barred!
Interesting to see quite a few matches, be good to see your spreadsheet Andy - can you make it like a nice coloured graph type thing?
I can
Jeez, am I really going to do such a nerdular thing?
Damn right, Baby!
Although give me time to sort it all out.
I'm a GEEK too
I've spent most of the morning wondering whether I should volunteer to do something similar. Best of luck, Andy!
But we already know which song
will win...V-2 Bloody Schneider!
Check it out...
I do detect a fondness for Wings B-side, C Moon, which seems to fit the Massive profile quite well as:
1) It has the required HJH provenance
2) It's obscure
3) Most people would dismiss it as inconsequential froth. It is, but it's quite good too.

An oddity
I can't work this one out...
If I list all my tracks alphabetically in iTunes, as I get to the end of the Ds and move into the Es it goes:
Dying Days - Screaming Trees
Dying Slowly - Tindersticks
A & E - Goldfrapp
E-Musik - Neu!
E-Type - Tindersticks
Yet if I type the Goldfrapp title as "A&E", leaving out the spaces, it takes its rightful place between Vampire Weekend's A-Punk and (A) Touch Sensitive by the Super Furries. When I add the spaces back in the track returns to the previous place.
Eh?
A theory
I think it is because the 'A' in 'A & E' is regarded as the same as the 'A' in 'A Forest', and punctuation can be confusing
Ah right
So it's ignoring the "A" and the ampersand (and the spaces) and treating the "E" as the first letter? Makes sense... sort of! Thanks.
Ignores "The" and "A"
I know that iTunes has a "Sort by" attribute that is entirely separate from the title/artist and by default this ignores "A " and "The " (the spaces are important). I sometimes use this to sort audiobooks into a series without having to include a number in the title tag.
Hence "The End" by the HJH would automatically be sorted alphabetically by E for the song title and B for the artist.
Apparently automatic sorting doesn't happen with "À " "Á " or similarly accented Latin.
..Lets have a number at the end too...

I decided to include a number song after Z just so my list doesn't end on a bum note. Though I have to say considering some of the dross on my ipod I did quite well to get to Z before a real cheesemonger reared its head.
I was pleased when Bowie and The Pixies cropped up as I was starting to wonder if I had any of my favourite acts on the blooming Ipod...

I upgraded form a 8G to a 16G ipod last autumn and it would seem that i have loaded a lot of 70's tunes on in prefernce of later tunes but hey ho it's not a bad list for me. A good thread as it's made me think of adding songs randomly now to see what comes off my itunes collection on the pc.
Does anyone actually read all these lists?

I'm not sure...
nobody laughed when I mentioned Lords Of The New Church in my list, so maybe not.
Far be it from me
to titter unduly. My little white box holds many a dark cheesy secret.
I don't mean my fridge.
There is something spectacularly unsettling about the phrase...
...dark cheesy secret.
Please don't use it again.
I need a lie down.
Dark Cheesy Secret
Sounds like a good name for a band if you ask me.
"nobody noted their laughter by posting it on here"
That might be a more accurate way of putting it. Anyway, they weren't that bad, and were balanced by having the mighty Fleshtones in your list (and H-Eyes, which I thoroughly enjoyed on crackly vinyl last night!)
Yes I do
I'm thoroughly enjoying the whole thing.
Haven't yet told the FPO I'll be spending much of Sunday doing some stats. You may feel a slight breeze as her nostrils flare when I do.

Think that bands will start releasing songs with lots of punctuation in the title just so they can appear on lists like these? Cheap publicity isn't it?

Don't worry, Team
Just to let those that seem to have to an expressed a genuine interest in the stats for all of the above know that I am ploughing through these.
Slowly.
It is certainly the most spoddishly pointless thing I have ever done but the graphs and pie charts I've tested so far look intense.
Anyway, I'm getting there. Though where 'there' is or why I am is a moot point.
I kind of feel one should be able to apply this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benford's_law
though I am sure if I were sober I could see that it's not going to help-but I kind of like the idea of a rigorous way of proving when someone is cheating at the Randomiser ...
Had wanted to do this, but
Had wanted to do this, but had been putting it off. But I'm a bit pissed and people have kind on my plea for help elsewhere, so here goes..
