Abbey Road remastered

thecolonel's picture

Last night I did something that I haven't done for ages. I actually put a cd in my cd player and sat back and listened to an album the whole way through without any distractions.

I pored over the artwork and read the sleevenotes, just as I used to in the days of vinyl albums. I have to say, it was a great experience. Most of my music these days is listened to through my laptop speakes while working and whilst the speakers are ok (I have a separate bass box) its obviously not the same as when its pumped out at volume through a proper hi-fi.

Having not had a 'proper job' for a while (and owning all the Beatles albums on vinyl and cd) I thought long hard about re-purchasing the current batch of remasters. Ideally, I would liked to have had the mono box and the stereo box but poverty restricted me(for the moment) to Abbey Road.

Aside from the all the hype, it does sound f**king amazing. I listened to it twice all the way through really loud and marvelled at it almost like a new discovery. By my God, the bass is loud!

Any more thoughts from the massive on this much discussed topic?

Bought it yesterday

I'm "on the road" at the moment and bought it on impulse at airport last night. Haven't bought any others as yet - waiting to get the mono box soon as can afford it! But, today confined to hotel, have just listened to it on laptop through headphones, but as has been noted elsewhere, a MacBook CD player is not greatest player in the world. Can't wait to get home and hear it all proper, like, really looking forward to hearing that lovely, rich rolling bass end I've heard so much about.I bet the drums on Something, bass on Come Together etc must be awesome. But even on crappy player and headphones, noticed:

Octopus's Garden is considerably sprightlier, Come Together noticeably richer and textured. Medley sequence seems more dynamic, the succession of track have been thrown into sharper relief, highlighting contrasts and tensions between the scraps of songs. And as someone else here commented, Golden Slumbers soars with plenty of oomph.

Strangely, the accompanying minidoc crashed my hitherto mighty MacBook Pro, gah. Not overimpressed with the cheesy animations on the docs, but its a nice touch!

Remasters and Cover Version

Agree - I really think the remasters sound amazing: tastefully restored, rather than remixed, though. And I would like to hear some remixes a la Love without the Jive Bunnyism!

I'm currently in the process of posting up a chronology of the best Beatles cover versions for download on my site http://tardymusic.blogspot.com. Feel free to visit/download/contribute!
