A Year and a Day

Paul Waring's picture

..is how long I've been a member of this little community.

And can I just say what a pleasure it has been, and continues to be.

Obviously "it's not as good as it was"...but it is, actually. As are the magazine and the podcast.

I still get a kick out of seeing my name in the letters page now and again, and hearing my name on the podcast on rare occasions. And joining in the banter on these pages is one of the highlights of my day. Unlike many similar fora, the bickering is gentle and the trolling rare.

So to all of you - thank you, and long may we be able to keep this civilised little corner of the interweb afloat.

A gentle shoulder charge to you all.

I feel exactly the same way, Paul...

the Word online community is something I truly cherish... as vacuous as contemporary culture can seem at times, the postings of the contributors to this site remind me that there are warm, intelligent and likeable people out there with interesting things to say.

Cap well and truly doffed, etc etc.

45 weeks and 5 days here

and quite simply it's the best thing about the internet in my book. Which means you lot are actually, the best thing about the internet. Well done Mr Berners-Lee (and the DevHell brigade for finding a decent use for this web thing).

52 weeks and 11 hours

In that time you've made me laugh, made me think and helped me find new things of interest.

And one of you told me how to rescue all my itunes files after my PC crashed so I'm not only grateful but I also owe beer.

Beezer | 13 October 2008 - 11:02pm

One year and two days (I just missed my own anniversary!)

Hugs and handshakes all round.
I love it here, for all the reasons you've mentioned, and more.

Gosh - 1 year and 4 days

Doesn't time fly in good company?

I'm welling up now.

Day 283....

This is keeping me going until they let me out of here. And believe me, I mean that, do any of you know how hard it is to type in a straitjacket?

and not a minute too long, although as you say obviously better in the old days, when all this was just green fields. Not had my name on the letters page for a while either - must remember to post something about 'The Wire' ...

1 Year and 6 minutes!

That's what it said - honest. Of course it probably says 7 minutes by now, but if I go and check then I'll never post this. So, 1 year and 6 minutes it is.

Clearly the golden age of the Word Massive.

Well put paul.
The change i've most noticed is that there's less Richard Thompson stuff than when i joined. At first every blog entry ended up on a discuusion about the man.Great Hip Hop singles would end up with someone claiming the Leige and >Leaf was better than Straight outta Compton. Very surreal.
the topics are more varied now and the blog is all the better for it.
Here's to another 284 days

Sour Crout | 14 October 2008 - 10:46am

I claim credit for silencing the RT fanatics

I posted a blog, within a week or two of joining, questioning why RT and Supertramp are always mentioned, no matter how tenuous the connection. I really got up peoples noses with that one. I deleted the post within the hour due to peoples ire, but I think the message got through. Ever since mentions of RT have declined and Supertramp never seem to get mentioned anymore.

If the person who runs this website can find my deleted blog from their archive, I will be happy to see it posted online again.

0
LOUDspeaker | 16 October 2008 - 10:42am

I'd love you to feel PROUDspeaker but.....

I think you wil find there have been plenty of RT comments, indeed, I have made many......... If you are searching for evidence under "Richard Thompson" I suspect it has been because, like you, I note, there has been a tendency to abbreviate to RT, which the word search engine doesn't manage to do.
As for Supertramp, easy, it's cos they're bollox!

Gone

Deleted means deleted, I'm afraid. Once it's gone, it's gone.

0
Fraser Lewry | 16 October 2008 - 12:26pm

But it is!

;-)
(Quite fond of the Nina Gordon version, tho')

0
Retropath2 | 14 October 2008 - 10:53am

Nina Gordon...

...did a version of 'Straight Outta Compton'? Wow!

0
stimpy | 14 October 2008 - 3:45pm

It is quite Wow, actually.

In a sweet young girl swearing sort of way, allowing for the fact that she may be less sweet than she sounds. Even impressed Retro Jr,who is a hardcore NWA fan.

Hmm. That's an awfully long time to be posting an awful lot of bollocks.

0
Archie Valparaiso | 14 October 2008 - 11:05am

My sort of worry, too.

Time taken to compose(ha!) and write same over said time period = too terrifying to contemplate, even given the joy we give to others. Well, each other.
Never mind, at least it doesn't damage my eye-sipht

somebody somewhere owes my boss a fortune in man-hours wasted faffing about on this site...

0
ivan | 14 October 2008 - 11:57am

You heartless, inconsiderate bastards.

Between you, you've cost me a bloody fortune over the last 46 weeks and 3 days. I've become permanently skint and to top it all I now need to put up more CD shelves. I wish I'd never come in here, you thoughtless swine.

0
Vulpes Vulpes | 14 October 2008 - 12:30pm

It's because we love you

0

That bugger Hepworth doesn't give a hoot

about the rude amount of dosh I've just had to fork out for my copy of Take Me To The River. Now I get to spend the next several months ears deep in southern soul brilliance, tappin' my toes and snappin' my fingers to the staggering sounds of two decades' worth of jukebox gold while my family resorts to eating the cornflakes packet once the cornflakes are all gone. What an arrogance of bullish disinterest in my personal fortune he's shown to deliver me to this pauperous condition.

A year and twenty-two days

Stands up sheepishly in front of the group

Hi, my name is Con and I've been a Word blog boarder for about thirteen months now. I've tried stopping - I really have - but I've come to relish that thrill of leaving dull reality behind and entering ths strange other world where the colours are brighter, the people friendlier and more articulate, and the jokes much worse. I've heard that the first step is to stand up and admit that you've got the habit so, well, there it is.

Sits back down in plastic chair. Accepts pat on the shoulder from friendly bearded bloke sitting next to him

0
Con Coleman | 14 October 2008 - 12:55pm

Thank you Con..

for sharing your experiences with the group. Learning to share is an integral part of getting to grips with your prahblem. To share is to care. Your recovery will be a slow process, but we'll be with you every step of the way....

0
Patrick Crowther | 14 October 2008 - 1:13pm

Something in my eye

Scrapes back chair loudly on linoleum floor and leaves room

0
Con Coleman | 14 October 2008 - 1:50pm

Exits...

* to the sound of applause *

0
Beany | 14 October 2008 - 2:12pm

Tommy Saxondale moment ahoy.

OK, now he's had his blub, can we put on some AC/DC please? And LOUD.

51 weeks and four days...

...although I didn't post anything for about ten weeks.

While other music magazines appear to model their message boards on the island in Battle Royale, WORD magazine's online presence remains a forum as opposed to an arena.

It's a community far greater than the sum of its parts. I can't wait for year two when we can all sell out, experiment with new age religions and destabilize the harmony by bringing in our girlfriends/boyfriends to write our posts for us.

(Puts arm around The Word collective) I love you guys. Thanks for giving me something rare and cherishable to waste my downtime (and some of my uptime) on - an entertaining, informative and eejit-free blog.

And enjoy it greatly.

0

35 weeks and 6 days ..

.....says mine, but it feels like so much longer. I´ve posted over a 100 times , all while at work. There goes my productivity bonus.
I´ve said this before but it bears repeating. I enjoy the cultured, witty and articulate arguments that break out and the lack of insults and general incivility is a joy to behold. Other sites are not so kind.

0
On The Fence | 15 October 2008 - 8:39am

What kind of arsehole

thinks there's a lack of insults on here? That's soooooo gay... (Sorry, On The, couldn't resist.) You're right, it's friendly, welcoming, witty and informative here - unless I'm posting, of course. (49 weeks and 4 days...)

0
nigelthebald | 15 October 2008 - 11:25am

I didn't ASK to be born!

At 24 weeks and one day, I consider myself the hormonal teenager in the massive. I've written a poem about it actually. It's on my facebook page. It's called "When Oh When Oh When Will I Get My End Away?".

I hate you. Can I borrow a tenner?

0
Austin | 15 October 2008 - 9:18am

Hey man...

your poem sounds, like, really deep. Far out!

0
Patrick Crowther | 15 October 2008 - 9:30am

Cheers (.

Inspired by Byron, actually. In a lot of ways I think I might be a sort of a reincarnation of his, like, spirit.
(deep voice) a snakebite please...er yeah 1991...shit! I mean 1981...No! 1989. etc

0
Austin | 15 October 2008 - 9:40am

0

One year six days

and may I thank you for getting me into The Wire (and the inevitable drain on my bank balance), giving me an excellent way to kill time at a rather dull job (although the buggers won't give us access to Youtube) and confirmation that Melbourne, Australia is truly a cultural backwater.

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 17 October 2008 - 8:34am

I always read it as Iftony...

...which is quite intersting.
(As a name, that is, rather than my word blindness, which is, probably, quite dull.)

0
Retropath2 | 17 October 2008 - 9:55am

Would you like me to change it?

0

Should it not be

R Tony? Just a thought...

0

Should it not be

What happened?

0
Beany | 17 October 2008 - 12:16pm

I would

If only I could think of something witty and erudite to replace it.

0
Thomas the Rhymer | 17 October 2008 - 12:32pm

Ifonly?

0
Leedsboy | 17 October 2008 - 12:54pm

45 weeks 1 day

Would have commented earlier but wanted to wait until got to 45 weeks. Never addicted to anything before but might be now. Have occasionally posted in haste and regretted in leisure but overall it's given me a good and warm feeling being part of this here unusually and generally congenial fellowship.

0

Twins! (Nearly....) 45 weeks 1 day

High point for me so far - 'Virtual Glastonbury' I realised then that there were quite a few kindred spirits in this happy band

0
muttnjeff | 18 October 2008 - 9:48am

Over one year

and love every minute of it. By the way can i just mention that Richard Thompson is touring his 1000 years of popular music in uk in January. I for one will be there with my boots blacked.

I heard this on a recent trip to USA - what's the difference between a cross country run and Gordon Ramsey?
A cross country run is a pant in the country!!!
