A World Of Music

MrRadio's picture

Why don't we try to map the best music of the world by nominating the best music from each country.I would be curious to know the best music of Belgium, Brazil or Mali for example or any other country currently off my musical map.

I'll start with an easy one

England-The Beatles

0

Germany - The Scorpions

Only kidding. It's Kraftwerk.

Nena....

0

With a shout out for Can.

0

Tuva

Huun-Huur-Tu.

Or however you spell it.

0
Silas Lang | 28 October 2009 - 11:25am

Tuva

Isn't strictly a county - it's part of the Russian federation. And I'd rate Kongar-ool Ondar and Yat Kha over Huun-Huur-Tu. But that's just me.

0
Fraser Lewry | 28 October 2009 - 11:55am

D'oh

But it's a republic, right?

0
Silas Lang | 28 October 2009 - 11:59am

Not...

In the same way that, say, South Korea is. They have their own parliament, but they're beholden to Moscow, and Russian law comes first. Basically it's not a sovereign state.

0
Fraser Lewry | 28 October 2009 - 12:06pm

Over to you Fraser

..on North Korea.
USA - Elvis

0
Charlie Gordon | 28 October 2009 - 11:26am

DPRK

It can only be the Ponchonbo Electronic Ensemble, although I'd go for the Korean People's Army Merited Chorus if you were to widen the scope beyond pop.

0
Fraser Lewry | 28 October 2009 - 11:57am

Hate to be a nit-picking Kim but..

PEE spell it Pochonbo.

0
Charlie Gordon | 28 October 2009 - 1:56pm

Spelling

PEE use Hangul, not English. I've seen it spelt both ways, but I suspect your version is the more common translation.

Canada: Cowboy Junkies.

1
Jon | 28 October 2009 - 5:43pm

shhh, don't start this one up again!

Australians think of Crowded House as Australian - formed there, based there for their early career, etc. We had a right old ding-dong on this topic, including having to explain why we gave a hoot about bands from little islands on the other side of the world.

Canada - Neil Young, for me.

0
Dave Amitri | 28 October 2009 - 8:17pm

Duffy?

Badfinger?
Manic Street Preachers?
Budgie?

The list goes on

0

0
Patrick Crowther | 29 October 2009 - 7:10am

Surprised no one has mentioned

Ireland: U2

0
Norwegian Blue | 28 October 2009 - 6:28pm

I disagree

Ireland : The Pogues

0
el hombre malo | 28 October 2009 - 7:03pm

How Irish are The Pogues?

0
Norwegian Blue | 28 October 2009 - 7:10pm

37.5%

Shane MacGowan (Irish)
Spider Stacy (English)
Philip Chevron (Irish)
James Fearnley (English)
Terry Woods (Irish)
Jem Finer (English)
Andrew Ranken (English)
Darryl Hunt (English)

(3/8)*100 = 37.5%.

Glad to have been of service.

1
DougieJ | 28 October 2009 - 7:29pm

More Irish than most

Shane's from Tipperary, and they certainly represent Irish identity and the Irish mindset to the world. Most of their musical roots are Irish - the Dubliners, the Chieftains, Brendan Behan - their tunes and their reference points are Irish.

Although they formed in London, I certainly wouldn't think of them as English.

0
el hombre malo | 28 October 2009 - 7:35pm

I refer the right-honourable gentleman

to the reply I gave some moments ago ;-)

I would say London-Irish describes them best. Many of their best songs are about The Smoke - Rainy Night in Soho and Misty Morning, Albert Bridge, for example.

0
DougieJ | 28 October 2009 - 7:47pm

We were posting at the same time :-)

But everything about them is rooted in Ireland - "a rusty tin can and an old hurling ball" - and a lot of the songs have some element of longing for the ould sod.

Ask Shane if he's English!

0
el hombre malo | 28 October 2009 - 7:58pm

" A hurling ball"

No Irishman would call it that, its a "sliothair"

0
On The Fence | 29 October 2009 - 8:05am

I'm aware of that

It was just the fact that many of them (even Shane if Wiki is right) were not born in Ireland.

0
Norwegian Blue | 28 October 2009 - 7:49pm

U2...

50% Irish...

Edge born in Barking to Welsh parents.
Adam Clayton born in Oxfordshire.

Irrelevant anyway - it's not where you are from, it's where you are at!

1
Adman | 28 October 2009 - 8:15pm

Touché!

I'll get me coat

0
Norwegian Blue | 28 October 2009 - 8:24pm

Ha!

:-)

0
Adman | 28 October 2009 - 8:34pm

National identity

is a moveable feast, it's true.

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions and Franz Ferdinand are often seen as Scottish bands, even though their frontmen are from Buxton / Chapel-en-le-Frith and Sunderland respectively, with the latter being of Greek extraction. There's no doubt though, that both were/are heavily influenced by the bohemian, art-school culture of the West End of Glasgow.

I agree that it's not where you are from, it's where you are at. Rod Stewart is another, often derided for his supposedly faux-Scottishness, but to me the London and Scottish aspects are equally valid aspects of his identity, which he expresses at different times. Shame he's a Celtic man but there you go ;-)

0
DougieJ | 28 October 2009 - 8:26pm

No, his loyalties

reside elsewhere:

You're Celtic, United, but baby I've decided
You're the best team I've ever seen
:-)

0
Black Type | 29 October 2009 - 1:04am

You learn something every day

As a sometime resident (ie from 6-18) of Chapel-En-Le-Frith, I'm thrilled to discover Mr Cole can from the Home of Ferodo Brake Linings. Can't remember him from primary school but I will look again at those b and w class photos...

0
Moseleymoles | 29 October 2009 - 11:00am

U2

Are a Dutch band aren't they?

1
Twangothan | 3 November 2009 - 5:42pm

Taxonomically, yes

:-)

0
el hombre malo | 3 November 2009 - 5:57pm

Estonia - Loits

Also - not strictly a band - but Georgia boasts the Anchiskati Choir, amazing polyphonic singers who have a CD available here through Soul Jazz Records.

Mali has cropped up several times - great to see Tinariwen mentioned, among others. Sorry if I missed these, but Terakaft are worth a listen, as well as the kora virtuoso Toumani Diabate.
