A Word In Your Ear

Dr Volume's picture

Just winding down in my B&B after a tremendous evening at the Lexington. Great performances from all 3 turns. The Wutars were quite something, frighteningly young and energetic and each sporting a fine array of haircuts but they had the chops to match! Fine players and each taking turn to lead a song which had some of the massive drawing comparisons with Buffalo Springfield!

Duncan Maitland provided some nice High Llamas/Steely Dan accompaniment as we charged our glasses. Pugwash were magnificent and despite just playing as a 4 piece beat combo they managed to recreate their lush Xtc/Beach Boys/ELO sound and with the fab sound system at the Lexington the harmonies were both loud and clear.

Hard to believe this is their first UK gig. No Neil Hannon (although we did get a Duckworth tune) but they were joined by comedian Matt Berry on keyboards for one number and then who should take the stage for the last 3 numbers? Only Dave Gregory from XTC! As a massive XTC fan that was the icing on an already delicious cake.

Well worth my trip from Manchester and it was great to meet David Hepworth, Mark Ellen, Kate Mossman, Dave Gregory out of XTC(!), Thomas Walsh (who was ace and gave me a bunch of CDs) and best of all the various members of the London Massive who looked after their Northern Visitor, esp Hannah, Richie, Ganglesprocket, Capn Underpants and all the rest of yer who I met all too briefly. As The Beach Boys so eloquently put it, Lets get together and do it again.
Excuse the poor quality blog entry, I'm on my windows mobile..

Oh yes

And what about the Wutars' version of "Gloria" then? Briefly I thought Van was in the room except I couldn't see who was holding his pie.

Thanks, Word!

Unfortunately I had to slope off early to catch the train as it was a school night, but I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I must say, I was extremely impressed with The Wutars - the sound of High Wycombe is certainly something. I take issue though with the introduction given by one Mr D Hepworth, who mentioned Nik Kershaw as being a Wycombe boy. My hometown of Ipswich has extremely little to be proud of, so don't take our Kershaw away from us; we hold him extremely dear. He certainly isn't from Wycombe, he went to school with my Dad!

Re: Nik Kershaw

Never take tips from Mark Ellen.

David Hepworth | 29 April 2010 - 10:39am

I think he's getting his 80s synth-pop cockatoos in a fankle.

Howard Jones was High Wycombe.

0
Adman | 29 April 2010 - 10:21pm

wycombe talent

bit surprised he forgot the mighty Phyliss Nelson, another Wycombe luminary..

I want to hear more

As I couldn't make it. Match reports, please.

photos and video too please

Sadly

prior commitments precluded my attendance too. It sounds like a great evening.

Apologies

To anyone whose ear I over-chewed last night (I'd been on the Samuel Smiths liveners afore arriving). Strange, one constant grumble amongst the massive is gig-natterers, yet I've never heard such a chatty crowd

0
Mondo | 29 April 2010 - 9:51am

This is surely the solution...

Patrick Crowther | 29 April 2010 - 10:36am

Yikes

Sound the Gimp alarm

To keep you going

until someone posts 'proper' photos, here's the magnificent Pugwash, at the Lexington (iPhone quality only...).

A splendid night Word people! Thank you kindly.

Sorry I had to flee so swiftly at the end, early start at work today so I'd have loved to mingle a bit more but just couldn't.

However, hellos are due to Dr Volume, Captain Underpants, Hannah, Pocket Calculator, Lunaman, D Green (and everyone else who I am too worried about mixing real and online names. You know who you are). It was a pleasure.

Plus I even got thank messrs Ellen and Hepworth as I charged away. Thanks very much gentlemen. I can't make it to Latitude sadly, but I'll do my best to come back if A Word In Your Ear happens again.

I am the Buffalo Springfield chap. In the cold light of day I may have slightly over reacted (I have the CD, but haven't played it yet, so I could be proven wrong here), but I think I counted at least four songwriters in The Wutars. If you don't all end up strangling each other as each potentially rampaging egos stretch out, you could do rather well!

ganglesprocket | 29 April 2010 - 11:44am

Howard Jones

The New Song Hitmaker was the one who famously came from High Wycombe.

0
Andrew Bradley | 29 April 2010 - 11:46am

Sorry Andrew...

I posted my Jones/Wycombe comment before I reached this point in the thread.
Can I just add that he worked in a biro factory before he was famous. Which is actually more interesting than some of his records.

Adman | 29 April 2010 - 10:25pm

Wutars

wow, those boys were good. Far too much talent and too many frontmen in that line up for it to last though. Plus their ten legs were thinner than one of mine.

I liked the gonk-like guitartist's song - Here with Me, was it? Class.

Duncan Maitland - left his gear at home, apparently. And his tunes.

Pugwash - yes! I had no idea. I'll be purchasing everything later.

Crowd - a bit talky, who'd have thought?

Massive = massive.

Captain Underpants | 29 April 2010 - 11:52am

Jealous

Sounds like a fantastic gig. (Dave Gregory!) Hope you all enjoyed it.

0
phlanth | 29 April 2010 - 11:54am

Sounds brilliant

Wish I could have made it. Hold the next one is Sydney, yeah?

Nick | 29 April 2010 - 1:09pm

top night with Word

top night last night, Pugwash marvellous and The Wutars top class as always, bring on the next one.

CDC | 29 April 2010 - 6:51pm

Great fun

Had a fine evening. Loved The Wutars (I felt very old) and Pugwash were great too.

As for all the chatting, that was fine by me and added to the party atmosphere.

0
Johan | 29 April 2010 - 7:05pm

Thanks you all.

Another splendid gathering and a great gig. Cheers..........
Fraser you were missed...

0
Lunaman | 30 April 2010 - 8:47pm

I wish there was a pub like that opposite my office...*

The funniest bit was being shepherded by Mark Ellen like a head prefect before assembly to get ourselves upstairs. Liked the Wutars, although my advice (worth just slightly more than nothing) would be to try and find your own sound, not the Arctic Monkeys'-the talent is definitely there.
Pugwash were very good, I was at the bar downstairs for quite a bit of Duncan Maitland's set. Can't believe that Dr Volume travelled 400 miles for it, although judging by your XTC t-shirt mate meeting Dave Gregory would have been worth it.
Fellow Massive hellos to Joe R, an unbruised Capt. Underpants, Hannah (yes, sorry, your t-shirt was nice too. Manners.), Dr Pill, Lunaman, Ganglesprocket and everyone else I rambled at. Oh, and Kate M. Fraser, you were missed, hope things are improving chez Lewry.
Just one thing, where were these free CD giveaways?

*although preferably also showing Barcelona v Inter

Richie B | 30 April 2010 - 10:33am

Hello Richie B

Completely agree with you. It was very funny being sent upstairs by Headmaster Ellen! Also, as talented as I thought the Wutars were a talented bunch but need to find their own sound.

Looking forward to the next Word In Your Ear. Think I might pop along to the next London Massive meet up.

REdge | 30 April 2010 - 9:03pm

An utterly splendid evening

I loved it. Absolutely loved it.

I had a very nice catch-up beforehand with lovely Word people inc. Mark, Juliette, Kate and Jerry. Fraser, you were very much missed by all us massive!

And then I had the pleasure of the company of the mini-Massive: Joe R (thanks for the book), Dr Volume (lovely to meet you! now charter a minibus for the next London drinks please), Captain Underpants (the best dressed man in the venue, as always), Richie B (you are entirely right about the Wutars), & the lovely Lunaman and Ganglesprocket, both of whom I didn't get a chance to do much chatting with this time unfortunately.

Looking at the other comments, I'm sorry missed meeting other members of the Massive like D. Green, Johan, Mondo and CDC. A shame, but maybe see you at the next drinks!

As to the gig itself: echoing a lot of what's been said already...

Wutars: really great, nice tight playing. So many talented singers and song-writers in the band too, blimey. Terrific stuff, such great energy and confidence (entirely justified). I want to see them again!

Duncan Maitland: the sort of music I'd listen to when curled up on the sofa with a hot cup of tea. Not the most uplifting or interesting music for a gig, IMHO.

Pugwash: another new introduction to me. but certainly one I'll be exploring further. Loads of wonderful songs, faultless playing... but then, Ambassador, with these special guests you are spoiling us. MATT BERRY ON KEYBOARDS! DAVE GREGORY ON GUITAR! SCREEEEEAAMMMMM!

Dr Volume and I actually SHOOK HANDS with Dave afterwards. He was utterly lovely, as you'd expect. I still have not quite recovered. Truly, I am obsessive fan geek girl.

And the evening was topped off with the Duckworth Lewis Method's "Age of Revolution". absolute high-point.

I loved loved loved it all. Top night.

Organise another one. NOW.

Hannah | 30 April 2010 - 12:23pm

delighted to meet you too!

and didn't Mr Gregory have the most marvellous, flowing, Peter-Tork-esque 60s barnet?

btw if Hannah or anyone else is looking for a handy intro to Pugwash who have been going since 1999 (who knew?!) Ape Records have a sort 'best of' the first few records called 'Giddy' which is available here:
http://www.ape.uk.net/acatalog/Pugwash.html
and features the majority of the tunes that were in the set on Wednesday.

Among the CDs that Thomas Walsh very kindly gave me for the journey back up north was the beautiful 'Eleven Modern Antiquities' which includes this gem co-written with Andy Partridge and featuring Neil Hannon and Eric Matthews. It'll be out in the UK soon I believe.

Wutars

some interesting demos here http://www.wutars.com/music
i'd commend Gamlastan to the Word house..

CDC | 30 April 2010 - 4:46pm

Perhaps peaked a bit early by getting somewhat 'refreshed' with

pocketcalculator, Dr Pill, Lunaman, Ganglesprocket, down in the bar during the early part of the evening but good to put names to faces.

Mark Ellen was stunningly beautiful and Kate Mossman was a right old laugh, full of salty tales of the NME in the 70s, Nick Kent, Iggy Pop etc...

...Er...

1
D.Green | 30 April 2010 - 4:58pm

As Sheeve would say

It's become somewhat 'as usual' to meet members of the Massive and feel like your meeting up with old friends. Cheers............

0
Lunaman | 30 April 2010 - 8:45pm

Still feeling foolish

for spotting Steve Lamacq coming into the pub and whispering to Richie "Look - it's Mark Lamaar!"

You know what I meant.

1
Captain Underpants | 30 April 2010 - 9:20pm

At least you whispered

Unlike me who said at full (Dr) volume, "oh apparently Steve Lamacq is coming down.." only for someone (I think your good self) to point out that he was sitting just feet away from us chewing down a bottle of Bulmers and tucking into his Monster Munch.
