A trio of Thompsons

Tim Turner's picture

I went to see Teddy Thompson at the Shepherd's Bush Empire last night. Having previously seen both his parents in concert, this means I've now paid to watch three separate members of the same family perform. (Teddy's sister Kamila has appeared on stage at a couple of the gigs I've seen, but I've never seen her headlining, so I'm not counting her.)

Can anyone beat that? Have you seen Loudon, Rufus and Martha Wainwright and Kate McGarrigle? Or Martin and Eliza Carthy, Norma Waterson and A.N. Waterson? You have to have seen them performing separately, in their own right, mind - just attending a Waterson/Carthy concert doesn't win you any points.

I'm scratching my head to think of other possibilities. John, Sean and Julian Lennon and Yoko Ono, perhaps...?

Whoops

I meant A.N. Other Waterson, of course. Though given the size of the clan, there may well be an A.N...

The Anderson Brothers

The Aliens, King Creosote and Pip Dylan. Only at festivals though, so not specifically paid to see them separately...

A set of Lakemen

might be another challenge. Sean, Sam and Seth, the folk inspired prodigies, starting off as the Lakeman Brothers, before moving, en masse, to Equation. Then, as they began to pair off, Sam became his later wife, Cara Dillon's right hand man, often augmented by brother Seth, later himself as big a star as the folk firmanent permits, with brother Sean often in his band in turn. Meanwhile aforesaid Sean is in a duo with Kathryn Williams (who like Ms Dillon, was with the boys in Equation.) How many variations and permutations have you caught, with extra points for the additional bonus of Kate Rusby, who pre-dated Cara Dillon in Equation, which began as the duo of Kate Rusby and Kathryn Roberts joining, phew, full circle,as above stated, the Lakeman Brothers?
Gratuitous recommendation: fantastic version of Suzanne Vega's Queen and the Soldier appears on the single duo LP by Rusby and Roberts. It's on e music........

Carter / Cash

Country music is full of performing families. The most famous is propably the Carter/Cash family. The Carter Family, Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Rosanne Cash, Carlene Carter....

You have Hank Williams, Hank Williams Jr, Hank Williams III. An propably more that I don't know.

Edit: And now I see that the requirement was to have seen them in concert. I havent. Any of them.

A trio of Wainwright Roches

I've seen Loudon Wainwright III, Martha Wainwright and Lucy Wainwright Roche, although the latter was support act for her dad. Does that count?

Also James Taylor, and Ben Taylor - I'll let you know if Carly Simon ever joins the list.

Wainrights, McGarrigles & Roches

I've seen Kate & Anna McGarrigle several times over many years, often with young Rufus & Martha on backing vocals. I've seen Loudon, Rufus supporting his Mum & Aunt, Rufus headlining with Martha as support and finally, The Roches, with Suzzy, Loudon's other ex. (He may have more other ex's but Kate & Suzzy are the only two I know about or have seen).

Earles and Wainwrights.

Seen old Loudo several times and Martha once. You couldn't pay me enough to go see Rufus.

Often been to Steve Earle and The Dukes concerts....his brother Patrick used to appear on stage on occasion...I think on the Transcendental Blues tour, he was hitting a dustbin lid with drumsticks. Steves sister Stacey is married to Mark Stuart and I've seen them play(in the Bein Inn...fantastic small but no longer music venue)too. Mark Stuart went on tour with Steve Forbert a couple of years ago as his(lead)guitarist and I caught them ar The Tron. Steves son is Justin Townes Earle and I saw him 18 months ago....I'm sure he's touring the UK right now.

So that's 3 straight Earles(not counting Patrick)and a bollock connection in Mark Stuart = 4!!!

I thought you were talking about the Thompson Twins then

...and I was quite excited

But I've seen Richard and Linda separately, with Teddy joining both of them on stage along with sister Kamilla, and all the Waterson clan who are living but all together (with you in fact, TT). So no, can't beat that.

They're easily confused, F-C

And so am I - for a moment there I thought you meant the Waterson clan were all living together with me. I think I would have noticed...

Not that I'd object if they desperately needed somewhere to doss for the night - but I don't think I could fit them all in our spare room. Maybe you could take Norma and the one with the handbag?
