Although I was becoming a Joni fan at the time (folk division) I first heard this when Tommy Vance played it as a tribute to Jimi Hendrix on a programme he was doing about Hendrix. His reasoning, if I'm not mistaken, was that there weren't any good songs about Hendrix so he played this instead.
